Favourite player when you were a kid?
Who was your favourite player when you were growing up? Mine was Kenny Hunter he had the most guts i've ever seen. I used to wear my socks down and jumper out just like him and fly for marks headfirst. Then it was Sticks, had the number 4 straight on the duffel coat when he came over. Other Fav's were Peter Dean what a champ, Wayne Johnson, 87 Grannie set the tone early. Bruce Doull, had the best spoil in the game ever, when he punched ball from behind always landed in Carlton hands and a beautiful long kick.

My favourite player was Peter McConville, a great player who could play anywhere, was devasted when he went to Stkilda, Carlton's loss.

I really don't think you can leave out Mil Hanna either? Adrian Hickmott, Tommy Alvin, Dorotich, you really could go on forever and name players couldn't you?

Fraser Brown, loved watching him play just because he had attitude, can't go past SOS, or sticks, Peter Dean was also a favourite, Craig Bradley would have to be near the top of the list, Ratten has to rate in there along with Earl Spalding, But the number on my back was Diesel's

Craig Bradley provided some great memories, didn't he? I always remember him taking a mark in the forward pocket, running towards goal against St Kilda - it wasn't a clean mark, and once he'd gained control of the ball he deliberately juggled it as he ran forwards, and tried to claim an extra 20m of distance on the mark. The umpire called him back and everyone had a good chuckle.

Peter Bosustow was an excitement machine, Kenny Hunter was a legend with the rolled down socks, Mike Fitzpatrick was inspirational - but I concur SOS and Sticks were the best. Probably give it to SOS for longevity and the fact that Sticks did some of his best work in a SA state of origin jumper

All of them you have mentioned were great. Peter Dean was so underrated. I also loved the mosquito fleet (maybe your all too young to remember them in the 80's). But probably one of my favourites of all time is Fraser Brown. (What a tackle)

Finally someone who remembers 80's. Mosquito fleet was awesome, Marcou, Ashman, Bucks and forgot another champion Peter Bosustow mark and goal of the year 1981. Look it up on youtube guys. He was a freak

My first real memories were from 79. Looking back now, at the time I really didn't appreciate the side we had. We were so lucky to win those premierships in 79 and the 80's. Everyone says to me now how can you keep going every week when you are losing. But we had it so good for so long that you have to stick by them and I can now see a light. I really believe that having Rat's back was the best decision they ever made. He played with the best and he can give us some of the arrogance back that we used to have. Another player that I loved and his career was tragically cut short was Motley. I remember when the 3 of them came over and even though the main focus was on Sticks I still reckon he could have been the best of them. He was just starting to come good when the accident happened after struggling with an ankle injury.

Yeah still remember waking up and hearing the news about Mots accident. They said he was gunna die so I was shattered. Probably cost Paul Meldrum the Brownlow as he had 5 BOG's by half way through the count. He saw accident and is form dropped so bad he was in the ressies later in year. Good thing was he made into GF side. You must be my age then as I just remember 1979 GF. My uncle is a mad Blues man and ran onto ground and has a photo of himself holding the cup. Cheeky bugger.

He reminds me a lot of Ratten. Best thing eva was when they got rid of davies and gave bentick the number 7. Always in and under. He certainly has the potential to play as well as kirk, just needs a little more consistency. Which hopefully will come!!

A little bit unfair on Davies - he wasn't awful, and Ratten himself did offer Davies his #7 - and he waived the standard 1-year number retirement for premiership players to do so. Pagan wanted to see him as just a small forward, but Barry Mitchell utilised him a lot better in the Bullants in the middle. Still, I doubt he'd still be on the list whether Pagan had ever coached at Carlton or not. Too small and not talented enough to make up for that. And I remember he got a red card in the Preliminary Final against Werribee, which turned out to be his last game. Sorry, I'm rambling. All of that having been said, there is no doubt that nobody deserves to wear Ratten's old number more than Bentick does. They're practically out of the same mould.

Yeah wasn't really trying to rag on Davies - i wanted him to be a good player...however as you say was under utilised coaching wise and had a fair bit of bad luck with injuries. I think you summary sentence pretty much sums up the point i was trying to make

Pity he rooted his back. Another who was looking really good abou t92 was Andrew Phillips. Remember him goal kicking rover. Bit of a waste he never recovered from his back injury.
