our biggest topic of 2008............
ok... it's time to talk truth here. end of 2008 we have some "dead wood" that will be chucked out. brett ratten and the board will sit down and decide who will stay and who will leave.
air plane tickets will be booked for
cain ackland (bye bye...)
richard hadley (if he doesn't get off the injury list like he has been for eight or nine games this year, with another five weeks.) waste of money atm.
and i still think there are a couple of other guys who need to watch themselves. houlihan better play some good footy when he returns or he will get the axe. i do like the guy, can he show his worth for the last nine games of this year. (maybe finals aswell)
any one else on ur list worth makin room for some new blood???

Saddington, Ackland, Blackwell are definites to be delisted/traded.

Benjamin will not go, he is a long term development prospect.
I heard Aisake wants to go home, i think he hasn't developed as well as we wanted him to and i think he may get the chop anyway.

We will get rid of about four for the draft and/or trades.

I think Hadley and Houlihan will stay because they are good players. I can't see any reason to get rid of Houlihan at the moment because he is a really good player. Might be worth looking at trading Betts as they could get a reasonable deal for him and he hasn't been in the best of form. The rest as mentioned should definatly go

you can't be watching the games if you think Betts is not in form. If we trade hime you would hope it would be for a Star

Ackland, Saddington and Benjamin are pretty much certain to go if their contracts are up. The former two are older and can't get selected, so there's no future there. Benjamin hasn't shown anything in his two years with the club and will be the first guy out the door.
Anderson, Bannister, Ellard and Blackwell may be out the door. Anderson hasn't been able to get back into the seniors, Bannister will probably be pushed out because he's older and guys like Gibbs can now play his role. Ellard is too small, and will go the way of Ross Young. Blackwell doesn't fit on a list with Hadley and Bentick.
Wiggins, Edwards, Hartlett, Houlihan, Aisake O'hAilpin and Russell are possibilities to go. I think Wiggins will probably stay, because we are so light on forwards, and unless there is improvement this year, I don't think Edwards will provide that; there may be discussion about Hartlett due to his injury-prone nature, but I think they will persevere unless medical advice says otherwise, because he is good when he's fit. If Hoops cannot be a good rebounding player when he gets back into the team this year, his age will probably work against him. Aisake will probably get one more year to find a place, but may otherwise we written off. Russell has his detractors amongst fans, but I don't think he's missed a game this year - this either means that the club has faith in him, in which case he's safe, or they're giving him this season to show his worth under a coach who uses him properly, in which case he's still probably safe because he's shown plenty of good form and there's a lot of blokes who'd be delisted before him.

Why? His disposal is a lot better than Marc Murphy's. Or Andrew Carrazzo's, for that matter.

I'd prefer to give him a bit more time. Jim Stynes wasn't a gun from day one and he turned out to be a very handy player. I'd say he has had some pretty good games this year, but he is not our number 1 or 2 defender which he has been forced to play as. I think he need a bit more time and a chance to play up forward a bit more. From memory he was pretty handy in the VFL up forward.

hes had 5 or 6 years now, how much more time does he need? his brother hasnt seen a game in the afl yet either, i think our irish excursion was a dent in our rebuilding phase
Adrian from Melbourne (Blues supporter), 30 Jun 2008 10:43 hide comment
This year he has proven himself as a very reliable defender. He got Scott Lucas and kept him to one goal. After Waite struggled against Jonathan Brown we put sentanta on him and he slowed him down. Hes so strong and thletic that you cant just give him away. Plus due to his inexperiance he will only be getting better until he declines athleticly.

ackland, saddington should retire before they get sacked. i havnt heard of benjamin so prob him too.
we should also have a good look at mckinlay from west coast, never wanted to go to perth and fev needs a hand.
Chris from Melbourne (Blues supporter), 24 Jun 2008 19:44 hide comment
I definately think Cain Ackland needs to go along with Jason Saddington. These 2 especially are a waste of air. I think there has to be a huge question mark next to Aisake O'hailpin and maybe either of the two aboriginal boys in Anderson and Benjamin.
Getting rid of too many players has been carltons problem for a number of years now where I think they could have given a few players in the past a longer life span.
However in saying that there may have to be a question mark next to Ellard and good trade bait would be a player like Jordan Russell, but he is showing big improvements. Blues need to inject more speed onto their list. Im a huge wrap for a bullants player in Aaron Joseph. Hes not only lightning quick hes also tough and can kick goals. Apart from the guys mentioned the others are safe i'd say.

Yeah, neither Cory McGrath nor Ian Prendergast were delisted on merit; they were just pushed out under the youth policy. No doubt Gast would be getting the job on Richo this weekend if he were still on the list.

Prendergast was one of the worst footballers ive ever seen play seniors.

Why? What about him attracted to you. All i saw was a short ruckman that was consistently beeten thet didnt know how to get a kick around the ground or take a mark up foward and then was given so many opportunites that you just left thinking why isnt he more.

I saw him dominate for a season in the VFL. I saw a bloke who may have lacked rucking prowess, but was a damn handy ruck rover. He had the biggest engine at the club, and was the guy who (before Bannister and Gibbs) used to shut Chad Cornes down - and he'd now be the guy getting Richo, and any other forwards who like to wander around the ground. Unfortunately for him, he (like so many others) suffered under Denis Pagan, and his inability to play players in their best positions.

Luke Blackwell and Cortney John both dominate the VFL but so what they cant play senior footy. I remember a couple of years ago when French and Deluca were both injured and we played a Bryan, Prenstergast ruck combo. Bryan dominated as an athletic ruckman playing in his first game while gast was just fillinging in the time when Bryan needed a rest. Gast at this stage had got more than enough gamse under his belt that despite his size he should have been our no1 ruck no a first gamer. Cloke is the same size gast was and he is a very good ruck.

It was due to these resons that he was kicked out. He was given time to find a spot and couldnt. We had better options at ruckrover. You say that he would have got richo this week but im looking foward to seing sentata v Richo. They are both strong, tall and athletic players that can cover alot of ground. Sentanta has been beating alot of players lattly and will give a good match up.

Same height as Bower and Fisher how would they go in ruck? Anyway he had to play there sometimes as we had no one else. I'd say he was handy thats about it would have been better at CHB maybe

He was a ruckman as much as Setanta was a ruckman - i.e. not a ruckman, but handy in the ground contest.

i hope we get rid of ackland, Hulahan and Wigan. I think we also unfortunately have to let go of Hadley if he does not get fit and saddington both injured players we picked up that could have been good if they could stay on the park. also big questions of Askie. Oh also i forgot get rid of bannister with most of this crew we could prob hope for some 2nd round draft picks at best.

Ackland and Saddington are gone, Aisake is probably out too, he's been there a while now and hasn't been able to break into the seniors. I think Richard Hadley is worth giving another season, he's been injured most of this one so hasn't had a fair go. Ellard has only played one game in the seniors this season (apart from the pre season) so they need to give some time at least to see if he will develop. I love Houlihan and Wiggins, theyre two guys who have been in the side through the hard times (especially houlihan) and it would be good if they were there to at least play some finals. Wiggins is more likely to go than houlihan but id love to see both of them stay on at least one more season
Mal from Melbourne (Blues supporter), 24 Jun 2008 20:30 hide comment
Hackland Gone.
Saddington Gone.
Aisake Gone.
Benjamin Gone.
Ellard is a 19 year old rookie he will saty as has promise and isn't costing us anything. Same for Joseph. Blackwell I think should stay but we may swap for a Vic boy in Perth to come home as Blackers is from WA. Maybe Ryan Murphy from Dockers or Selwood from Eagles. Hartlett they rate but body no good maybe trade to SA. Wiggins will stay I think he has a year to go on contract but is probably on peanuts.Russell will definately stay unless traded maybe for Salopek another Vic boy (don't think Port are that silly though). Hadley and Hoops safe.
Adrian from Melbourne (Blues supporter), 24 Jun 2008 16:57 hide comment
Hadley and Houlihan will stay. You cant dump players simply because they have been injured and havnt been able to play. Hadley was playing good footy before he got injured.

Saddigton and Ackland are gone no doubt about it. They are old and cant get a game so they have no place. Aisake will probably go as he is not looking like he will make the seniors ever and hes 23 so we cant give him to much more time. Bannister and Jackson dont get many games and will also get looked at. Bannisters been on the list a while and hasnt found a place while Jackson was a rookie that impressed everybody but this year has struggled. I hope Blackwell stays as i quite like him as a player but there are to many others in his way and hes struggled with form and injuries this year.

Wiggins and Russel both needed to improve alot this year to stay and i feel Russel has but Wiggins hasnt. Wiggins is a medium foward that dosnt kick any goals and hardly takes a man away from Fev so wy waste a spot in the 22 when Edwards can play the same role but better as hes shows in his 3 games this year.

Hartlett, Anderson and Benjamin will all be looked at but will probably stay. They just need to prove that they will make the seniours next year or they are out.
