Blues vs Port
Did we learn anything new during the game? Not much - we still concede a lot of goals through turnovers, and we still lack depth in the forward line. But here is what we did learn: 1) We can't play wet-weather football. Port were much more adept at kicking off the ground, thumping forward, etc. 2) Bannister is in trouble. Banno's best party-trick was his ability to completely shut Chad Cornes out of football games. Gibbs did likewise today, so Banno may struggle to win back a place. 3) Kreuzer should play forward. With our forward-line as weak as it is, Kreuzer should be developed into a Koschitzke-style forward who can take the F50 ruck taps. He won't be our #1 ruckman, and may not even be our #2 ruckman. But he could make this position his own, draw the double-team away from Fev, take the top tall defender away from Fisher, and help to fill the gap left by Kennedy's trade. 4) Judd is fantastic. We already knew that, but we enjoy learning it again each week. 5) The backline has depth. Setanta is viewed as a back-up defender, and he's good enough. Our ability to defend the rebounds was much better than it has been, but the wet weather clearly had plenty to do with that. I'll wait until I see us do it in the dry before I proclaim victory there.

It was a great move by Brett Ratten to ask Kreuzer to go forward and kick us some goals in the last quarter. Fevola did his bit by keeping his two men out of Kreuzers way. Kreuzer should be a permanent forward and not a ruckman, we need to recruit a good ruckman at the end of the year.

We have Hampson, Cloke, A. O'hAilpin and Jacobs. Out of these four, and with Kreuzer and S. O'hAilpin to pinch-hit if really necessary, we will be able to build a competitive rucking staff. There is no need to recruit more ruckmen.

Rbbie warnock from freo will be at carlton next year. Nothing wrong with using cloke and or kruezer as permanent forwards either. Cant wait to see the back of Ackland but I doubt A O'hailpin is gonna make it!

Although I disagree, I can see where you're coming from. Who would you give up to acquire Warnock? (A bit of a meaningless question, since almost all trades involve draft picks these days, but let's pretend that player-for-player swaps still exist).

That will give Essendon and Melbourne first crack at him. Essendon needs a half-decent ruckman (deep down, I'm sure they realise that Hille and Laycock won't get the job done), and White is surely near the end of his career at Melbourne.

to be perfectly honest robbie warnock is not going to be high on eithers priority list, it would be relatively simple to out price them as there will be bigger fish to fry preseason..

there are reports that out of favor fremantle ruckman ryan warnock could join carlton with him out of contract out of the end of season could push Kreuzer in the forward line or chf may be his prefered position.

But we need a ready made ruckman that can be our number 1 ruckman, then hampson can become a better ruckman under him.

I'm not sure we do. We're winning at stoppages, quite comfortably some weeks, and staying competitive in games, despite most teams trouncing us in the ruck. The way I see it, Hampson improves more quickly by taking 50% of centre bounces now than by watching a ready ruckman, and we remain competitive. (Also, I'm sick to death of recycled ruckmen. Except for Barnaby French, they've all been failures. Ready-made ruckmen are almost impossible to get).

you are right... decent ruckmen are in short supply. There are plenty of ruckmen out there who should smash us out of the middle, but as we saw with Cox, Sandilands, Lade etc... so long as our midfield can read the taps (which they can and do) we got no major problem there. Happy to watch Hampson, Cloke and Kruiser all develop at our club! They are getting better week by week!

Newspaper says that Thurstans took Kreuzer in the last. Carlile was Fev's primary defender, but he was double- and triple-teamed all night. Not sure about Fisher. The backs shuffled a bit. Setanta and Waite split time against Westhoff and Tredrea - Setanta certainly beat Westhoff when he was on him, and both Tredrea match-ups were probably close wins to us. I think Thornton spent most of his time on Motlop, and was okay. Carrazzo was on Gray for pretty much the whole game, and did well both in defense and rebound.

Just a quick question. I couldnt watch the game but i did listen on the radio where the commentators dont give you much feedback on who is playing well untill the end of the game. Who was on Fev, Fish and kruezer. And who did Sentanta, Thorton and Waite get and howd they go.

i sayd something like this when we beat west coast but right now winning games that we dont play well for the hole game can be better than winning convincingly. It teaches a young group how to lift and work together as a group when it is needed. Right now every win is a positive. Next year we need to play more consistent footy however.

Trust me I am not saying we don't need Fev it was just good to see us win without Fev kicking a bag. He still did alot of hard work and drew all of the defenders to him which helped Kreuzer and the others.

I didn't see the game on the tele but listened to it on the radio, from what i could gather it was a very scrappy game in which carlton turned the ball over numerous times, however so did port! Out of everything, i think we learnt that we can actually win from the position we were in, losing badly, which was the same as the freo game! Judds a freak everyone knows that already. We just put our head down, arse up and look wat happens, magic boys fukin magic!!!!!!!!!!

Not convinced on the not needing Fev thing - ten goals in the game, 20% of which were Fev's, is hardly inspiring. Everything else was true, though.

We also learnt that we don't need Fev to kick a bag for us to win. We all saw why Murph, Gibbs and Kreuzer were no 1 picks. We saw Gibbs give Cornes a bath, which has only got to be good for footy. And we also saw Mark Williams choke on his words which you have to love.
