Thats Right... BLUES ARE GOING TO STRIKE BACK!!!!!!!!!
As a paid member and lover of the best club in the world, the Blues will face our enemies the Bombers and the Pies the next 2 weeks. I dont care what those supporters say because we have overcome the darkest of storms they have cursed us with the past 6 years.

And we're going to be stronger this time... Our Defence is fortified, our Midfield is faster! Our Attack is firing with more Blues kicking them!

Ratts is our Coach, Swan is our Chief and Pratt is our God. Blues Supporters are Quality! Keep our arrogance Blues fans because we know the premiership cup more than anyone else!!

Again, I think the backline is doing fine, and that it is simplistic to say 150 points = bad backline. I have summarised the cause of every Essendon score from the game - I'll summarise at the end if you don't want to read them all.
Scores: SS = Set Shot; P = in-play; (T) = touched
Blames: MP = midfield pressure; DP = defensive pressure; DE = defensive error; TO = upfield turnover; O = other. Capital letters for full blame, lower case for half blame.

QUARTER 1
1. SSG Peverill. Set up by the before-the-bounce free kick. Probably blame the confusion of the incident. O
2. SSB Lloyd. Jamison very close to spoiling; set up by Waite FKA. de
3. PG Davey. Scored from crumbs following unassisted Lloyd I50. mp dp
4. SSB Monfries. Dodgy 50m penalty vs Bower. O
5. SSG Ryder. Cloke caught behind Ryder. Assist by dodgy FK to Lloyd. DP
6. PB Peverill. Unpressured run, long score from 50m. MP
7. PG Riemers. Two midfielders break free of opponents and link-up. MP
8. PG Ramanauskas. Unpressured run through midfield, long kick. MP
9. SSH Lonergan. FKA Thornton. DE
10. PG Monfries. Crumbs to Essendon following unpressured I50 to Jetta. mp dp.

QUARTER 2
11. SSG Lonergan. Holding the ball against Gibbs in D50. DE
12. PB Hille. Lack of ground pressure following spoil in D50. DP
13. PG Monfries. Thornton clanger created pressure, Essendon capitalises. DE.
14. PG McVeigh. Players stopped following Scotland and Waite not being awarded holding the ball. Blame confusion. O
15. SSB Lloyd. Outmarked Jamison at 50m. dp
16. PB Winderlich. Unpressured run down wing. MP
17. PG Lovett. Turnover at HF allowed Lovett to run back unpressured. TO
18. PB Stanton. Unpressured through midfield, Essendon scored from crumbs. mp dp
19. POOF Jetta. Roved from stoppage. O
20. SSG McVeigh. Turnover at HB (Simpson), Carrazzo trailing McVeigh for uncontested mark. to dp

QUARTER 3
21. SSG Laycock. FK at HF, unpressured down wing, Waite trailed McPhee for assist, Laycock unmarked. DP
22. PG Lloyd. Turnover: Thornton tackled in back pocket. DE
23. SSB(T) Riemers: Holding the ball at HF, unassisted run to HB, then Bombers held up before Riemers shot from 50m. TO
24. PG Lovett: Turnover: Murphy kicks into Fletcher at HF, Lovett unpressured, 1-2 with Watson. TO
25. PB Dyson. McPhee ahead of Waite with assist. dp
26. SSG Hille. Thornton beaten for contested mark in goal sq, set up by Lloyd who won ball at ground when Jamo fell. DP
27. PB(T) Lovett. Fast run through centre, despite pressure.
28. SSG Lloyd. Turnover (Russell kick) in rebound, Lloyd unchecked. TO
29. SSG McPhee. Beat Waite on lead. DP.

QUARTER 4
30. SSG McVeigh. Beat Judd in 1-on-1 contest running goalward from midfield. mp
31. SSB Hille. Usassisted short kick from 50m to goalward-running Hille. mp
32. SSG Lloyd. Unassisted kick to Ryder, Lloyd beat Jamison to contested mark. mp dp
33. SSG Lonergan. Quick rebound turnover in forward line unpressured through centre. MP
34. SSG Houli. Free kick against Bower (high tackle) Kick taken from long distance. mp dp
35. SSG Lloyd. Bower lazy in upfield contest against McPhee. Jamison beaten for contested mark. DP.
36. PG McVeigh. Unpressured kick from 60m, Lloyd shepherded Jamison away in goal sq. MP dp

Overall, I have counted the blame for scores to:
Defensive Pressure (either in marking contests or on the ground): 10½
Midfield Pressure: 8½
Error in Defense: 4½
Turnovers upfield: 4½
Other: 4

So, the equivalent of thirteen Essendon scores were caused by turnovers upfield, or a complete lack of pressure in the midfield. In addition to this, there were multiple occasions on which an Essendon player of string of Essendon players ran unpressured through the centre square, often switching the ball inside from a hard-ball get on the wing, where the quality defensive work of Jamison in particular but also the others spoiled these marks on many occasions.

It should also not have escaped anyone's attention that Essendon kick an abnormally high amount of its score from on or outside 50m. You could frequently see Bomber players stifling at half-forward, eventually taking a running shot from there. This is the sign of a good defense.

One big positive: Essendon did not score from any of its eight kick-ins.

The big scores put up against us every week cannot be placed on the backline alone. The backs are severely let down by the lack of pressure put on in the midfield, and I personally believe this to be a greater problem than the backs themselves.

Tarrant you are obviously a very passionate supporter. But you have to face reality our back lines does suck. You can blame midfield all you like but footy is a simplistic game. No doubt some player in the midfield will get beaten or the ball turns over from a poor kick ect. That is how forward entries are gained. Our backline is terrible they try hard but honestly they are about as relieable as a LADA russian car. I love the blues and are attending the game tomorrow with my family. But we will not win a game this year until we get a realible back line. Very rarely does our back line dominate any forwards. It simply hasn't happened at Carlton since SOS has retired. At least we have a fresh look of backs but they are just not good enough. Thornton has played as hard as he can for the past 6 years but he is not strong enough against most quality forwards. They have played him out of position for last six years as we don't have a quality key position player in our back half. Never mind I hope we have a win this weekend.

I don't mean this to sound gloaty, so please don't take it that way, but our backs absolutely squashed the Collingwood forwards today, with significant help from excellent midfield pressure. I'm maintaining my optimism.

Gloat all you like our backline played really well today sure they made a few mistakes but you are right they were well supported by our midfield. I went to the game and was wrapped with our teams effort. I hope we can win a few more games this year. At least we beat the cocky pies.

a couple of reasons ehy i think we are loosing is our B grade midfielders are no were near as good as our opposition. In rounds 1 and 2 we jumped out of the blockes early with Judd, Stevens, Murphy and Cloke in the middle. As soon as they come off and Gibbs, Carrazzo, Simpson, Hadley and Hampson go in we loose the lead.

Against Richmond we lost the lead in the last 10 min of the first 2 quarters before loosing and against St.Kilda we lost the lead in the last ten minutes of the first, after that we couldnt stop their momentum.

The difference this week was that we started Hadley in the middle and not Murphy. This ment that rather than jumping Essendon we kept with them. When the midfielders rotated we put in Murphy and Kruezer (rather than Hampson) this ment that we didnt fall behind but again we were able to keap with them. (Please dont get the idea that i dont like Hampson because i do. I think he will be a good player in the future he just needs more time.)

The other issue is that our fowrds dont take enough marks. This week was different but the last two weeks when the ball his the ground we couldnt crum it and just turned it over. The midfielders are not accountable on the counter attack and the defence it put in alot of pressure when they are our numbered 10-6 due to late of accountablitity. Our defence is good when the ball is kicked in because we are good at spoiling and then crumming. Scotland, Bower, Waite, Thorton and Houlihan are some of the best runners out of the backline. We just struggle when the opposition run the ball into there foward 50 due to lack of acountability. (Andrew Lovett is the best example)

I wouldn't say Lovett was the best example, since his goals were both from half-forward turnovers (neither caused by him), and when your players are running forward to attack, a turnover is usually damn hard to stop in the middle. But there were lots of good examples, and everything else you say is pretty accurate.

i chose Lovett as an example because he kicked 2 goals by running at our defence. 1 he kicked from 55m because our defenders were doing the right think my maning up until thorton decided to put some pressure on him and the other he got from 25 out by running past our defenders because.

Both of these goals were results of lack of midfield presue after the turn over.

Well lets hope that this week we have more than eight contributors. Because I don’t we’ve played a game in six years with more than ten players actually have a crack. Maybe a couple but seriously, to many bloody spectators. Getting sick of watching ten guys play against eighteen. Cause that’s what Collingwood have. Eighteen contributors.
As soon as any team gets a turnover on us. They run. No one is scared to take on a side that has been weak for so long. No respect could bring Collingwood undone this weekend because dale Thomas, alan didak, medhurst will run every time. I will laugh if they get caught out being cocky in the first half. Could happen. Just gotta play four quarters for once and we will be on the board for four points against the scum of the earth.

tarrant, you are on the money in more ways than one. the problems i saw you might see from a different angle. st kilda v carlton two minutes before half time. we ran out of legs. judd rooted, stevens rooted. all the pressure falls onto the young talented midfeilders and they don't handle the pressure, half back line starts gettin smashed and we crumble. this week the snoozers (bombers) **** themselves because we are firing up with ten left in the third term... ahead by thirteen points we fade with two minutes left and the rest is history. this tells me a few things, judd is amazing... in one week he has gone from being 50% match fit to nearly 75% match fit. stevens is about the same to... does this mean that agianst the pies they will hit there straps. i bloody well hope so.... lol. bower is getting better, i will love it if betts has two good games in a row. don;t think he's done that yet... oh and tarrant do u have a dream team? if so whats ya score???

I'm no good at dream team, so I decided to make a mockery of it by making the Oak-Leigh Matthews, containing only players named Matthew. I only had one defender playing last week. I'm doing poorly.

ohhh i forgot to mention. i don't think any player has proven to me like kade simpson how useless a couple of players are on our list. i could of punched his face in the other night. everyone was workin together, gettin the ball out of the back line then twice or three times simpson kicks it straight to the bombers. another two times he managed to get smothered which resulted in goals and then holding the ball aswell. we would of been better playing with seventeen players. ohh and go ahead and defend him if ya want boys but i don't think hes got what it takes to play at this level atm. when you see judd get the ball and two guys takle him on twelve occasions he still manages to get an affective posseions out to one of his own team mates. not the bloody opposition.... ****

Simpson is a very good talent. He is fast and determined. His flaw is that he lacks decision making skills. He can get the ball easily enought he just dosnt know what to do with it when hes got it, its like his mind goes at a million miles an hour when hes got the ball in his hands.

If you compare him with our 3 best midfielders Judd, Stevens and Murphy he gets similar amount of disposals but when they get the ball they seem to stop and look around more. the can buy time if needed by running into space and they go for the best option rather than the first option. I feel the Simmo gets the ball and then gives it to the first player he sees.

On Saturday night there were a couple of moments when the best option was to kick inside 50 but instead he handballed to a guy that has tackeld and gave away a holding the ball.

Despite that he is a great player.Against Essendon I saw him handball it to Stevens and then put on the shapard that gave Stevens time to line up the kick to Fev that resulted in a goal. It was that shepard that got the goal because Stevens was gone without it. It was in the 3rd Quarter if u want to have a look.

i was a bit pissed off when i wrote the last msg. but yeah he did do one good thing. if only he would do ten each match. the funny thing is he gave a shepard to stevens after he handballed it to him and nearly screwed him over. see what happens this week.

you are kidding yourself if you think the backline is any good! to much pressure is put on fev to kick a bag every week. stevens dids to hang out with witnill at the fat farm and judd shoud be on the sidelines he is not fit. we should do to kreuzer what the cats did with hawkins and play him sparingly till he bulks up a bit. patience ppl
Tarrant from Melbourne (Blues supporter), 5 Apr 2008 10:46, Last Reply: 6 Apr 2008 11:58 hide comment
Our backline does not suck; that's the biggest misconception of our team. Our pressure on opposition midfielders delivering the ball into their 50m zone does suck, but our defenders: T-Bird, Waitey, Bower, Jamo in a couple of years, Banno when there's a smaller running forward - these guys are good.

The forward-line is a shambles, unfortunately, when Fev is playing poorly as he has in the second halves of our first two games. Edwards could be a useful second dangerous forward, but still needs development. Fisher is still a good marking option, Betts is sporadic as a crumber, Kreuzer should eventually end up in a Koschitzke role, but that's likely a few years away before he's a top player.

Assuming full fitness, Judd and Stevens could get a game for Geelong. Thornton definitely, Waite probably, Fev maybe (imagine the damage Geelong's multi-faceted forward-line could do if they had an actual spearhead to attract defenders also), Carrazzo perhaps. I don't think it's as bleak as Paul says.

I am not trying to be bleak just realistic. I love the Blues and hope that one day they will turn it around but just think we are still about 6 or 7 quality players off being competitive and final hopes. Yes I am a member and hope just like all the blues supporters that eventually they will win another game or at least put up a decent struggle in a game. We have lost the ability to win

I'm not accusing you of being bleak - we aren't playing well, and I can see that. But I think my positive appraisal of our backline is realistic.

Our back line is a problem again 150 points scored against us. Our midfield dominated most of the match and forwards did their job. They try their hardest and are very inexperianced but the truth is we won't win a game until we sort out our backs. Their seems no unity up back they don't communicate with each other well and fumble or fall over at critical points. They will get better but another year of maybe 4 wins likely. It was great tonight to see how may good players we had Fev was fantastic as was Judd and Stevens Betts. But lets be realistic The Bombers aren't going anywhere in a hurry either they were thrashed last week. So I look forward to next week against the pies I hope we will have another good account. Go Blues I only hope we will eventually win a game.

Well it wasn't a win. Entertaining Match but it was a bloody win. Once again 'our enemy' the Final quarter stuffed us. We can never keep the Lead. We should of won last night, but i think preassure its to great for us, in close games like last night. The Positives? Judd(Always a star) - Stevens(fantastic, worked well with judd) Betts(What more can you say? he's lil freak) Kruezer(1st game and we can see he's going to be a champ) Fev(when he's determine he can be an explosive player).. are we going to we next week? who know's really. The only thing we can do is just hope we do and stick by our team. I saw a lot of positives last night and this young team, will be unstopable. Go Blues.
Paul from Geelong (Blues supporter), 5 Apr 2008 10:15hide comment
I would love to say that our darkest years have past but I see more pain ahead. Our mid field will be great soon. But our back lines sucks with the exception of Thornton. Our forward line is disfunctional at best. I have also been a member for years and have seen the Blues at their best in the 80's to early 2000 but we are stuffed at the moment. Our young blokes don't have the experiance or harden bodies to cope with the demands of Senior AFL. At best only two of our current starting 18, I reckon could get a game in the current Geelong side.
