Round 1: Blues v Tigers Discussion
I went to the game tonight and it was just shattering. I know it's only one game into the year but the reason we lost tonight is the same as last year, and the year before etc... apart from confidence WORK ETHIC and ACCOUNTABILITY are two things that this group of players do not posses in large doses.

I'd be happy to keep going week after week after week and watch us lose if they had a ret hot crack and put their all on the line, but they don't.

When the balls turned over hands are on hips and heads are down, Richmond in the second half had players free all over the ground.

The first half was great apart from the delivery into the forward line. Players took accountability for their opponent and we were all over them, it was clear that we had more talent on the field than Richmond.

But one half was apparently enough, the second half was just 2007 all over again. Loose opponents, kick and hope forward line delivery, no movement, no direction.

I'm gonna try and stay confident that Judd and Ratten can install some work ethic into these kids but it's becoming more of a struggle. Thoughts?

(By the way I'm a guy named Jess, just for the record haha)

Ryan - I know it's going to take time but the fact still remains that despite apparently an 'overhaul of our game plan' there is NO DIFFERENCE between what happened last night and what has happened the last few years.

No manning up, too many choppy approaches down the flanks (watch geelong do they EVER approach the forward like like that or do they go DIRECT to a target) and a kick and hop to Fev game plan that Pagan used. Not a damn thing has changed unfortunately, I seriously wonder what work was even done over the pre-season.

The kids skills have improved, as we won almost every contest bar Richardson in the first half. We now HAVE the talent to compete, it's all a battle above the shoulders now. The day that this group of kids decides to give a sh*t about pulling that jumper on will be a happy day.

But for now, it's another season of grinding my teeth week through week. If this goes on my life insurance policy will go through the roof, they're killing me this lot!

it is painful to watch.. i honestly didn't feel like they had the fitness. fevola was puffin after two minutes. drinkin to much piss the other night. as a carlton supporter i feel as if were struggling to live up to expectations and nobody fears us as a team. if we beat st kilda this weekend. people will look up to us a bit more and essendon will **** em selves. if we lose though... (good chance for that) then we will not win till round five against melbourne. but then that could be there first win for the year... im a bit worried. hope for the best sat night. peace out bro

I believe this is very true I dont mind if we lose either but have a go.
I know we have young kids who are just going to get better but they need role models.
I love Fev but really when is he going to go up, make headlines on the footy ground thats where they count.
I will be looking forward to see how we go when everyone is fit.
Nicky, Judd, Cloke have all come off injuries and it will be good when we get Fish and Tex back.
Hang in there guy's this hurts because we know how good we use to be and we will get there again, Ratt's knows the good old days and will help return us there.
Go Blues!!!!

We were lackin forward and ruck options and some of our key players (Judd, Stevens, Hadley, Fevola, O;hailpin) were under done due to limited pre-seasons.
We were never going to win that game.
We should all see a much more competive performance from the blues in round two.

Related topic: was anybody else slightly amused that Cam Howat scored a longer suspension than Harts? I only saw what little was available on TV, but it looked like Harts was in plenty more trouble than Howat. I know that the club is surprised Harts got away with only a two-match ban.

It was a shattering loss, all pre-season there has been so much hype on Judd, Stevo, Hadley...how many Fev was going to kick this year..blah blah blah.

All 4 of those players had interupted pre-seaons, Judd is only 75%, Stevo hasn't played in year, Hadley much the same, Cloke missed 18 odd games last season, Carlos was 75% with a bung shoulder, We have no rucks playing, Walker and Fish missing.

Once Hampson and Kruz are back in the side and the above players blow out those cob-webs, we will show a few teams what we can do.

The 2nd half of the year will be better than the 1st half.

good call. i def think we needed fisher. edwards looked good but needs more games. Kruezer and Hampson look like great rucks for the future, cant wait until there in the team.

After halftime we looked like handbaggers, I don't think anything has changed in our approach since last year only the captain, he though was quiet good.

I say we help Ben Cousins through rehab and secure his services for next year and stop tanking now.

Thanks mate.

We Carlton supporters are all dickheads, look at us turning on each other after 1 lose.

Come on guys band together, it's not time to panic yet.

We are underdone and the players are overpaid.

Lets start tanking now and help Cousins through drug rehab, secure him for a dynamic duo of Judd/Cousins and then we can start to rebuild.

you cant honestly want Cousins. our midfield is our strength for the future. Murphy was great for 3 quarters and stevens was solid. Carrazzo and simpson weren't bad althought they werent hitting their targets all the time. with judd getting more fitness into his legs and ruckment like kruexer and hampson develeping Cousisn is the last player we need. Get some confidence and try to find some positives and enjoy the rest of a DEVELOPING year for our great team.

Adrian..Pete is not a Blues supporter..He is some Collingwood lowlife posing as a Blues supporter..check his comments on the other blues boards...If he is, he needs therapy....he wants to swap Fevola for Cousins.never heard of anything so ridiculous

I agree it was a shattering loss, but there are positivies to take away from it - Stephens, Judd and Kade Simpson all played brilliantly on the whole, and Thornton had a pretty good game too. The faults I saw were (a) not manning up (an old problem), (b) 3 Carlton players (particularly the green youngsters) all going for a contested mark (lack of communication), (c) less than effective kicking to targets (ie not hitting forwards on the chest, and forcing them to go up for marks) and (d) no strong defender on Richardson (the match winner) - where was O'hAlpairn? He should have been all over Richardson. There were some fantastic passages of play in the second quarter, and with Fischer coming back this week, there's every reason to hope that our beloved Blue Boys will advance up the ladder this year.

Hey Jess, you've got it in one... The whole second half was just pitiful! Fev let us down dropping some easy marks but i think too that he needs more help down there. Fisher was a big miss!
Let's just hope 08 is all up from here. And remember, 8 teams have to loose in round 1!!!

Fisher would have helped, but they just didnt deliver it up forward enough for Fev to do much more....yep we got more guys to come into the side that would give us adifferent line up ..but you cant buy experience..these guys just need to play more games together...we got the players, now we need them to play as a team!

is disapointed as i was leaving the ground i found a few positive points from the game.

1) murphy was, in my mind, our best midfielder. he won a lot of hard ball and in the first half he was creating alot of inside 50's.
2) thorton looks good when hes not on the best foward he created a lot of rebound 50's
3) judd was good for half a pre-season
4) eddie betts looks like hes gonna be alot more consistent than he has been.

also was it just me or did sentana look like hes lost a bit of weight.

from watching the other night i believe with out major injuries and with the return of fisher and walker we will be near the eight, i was impressed with the first half and u have to remember judd wont be good until round 6-8, fev should get 100 with judd and stevens even murphy delivering......bull **** about cousins, we have 3 number 1 draft picks who seem loyal......2009 should be a good year, this year we must be patient and hope...
Daniel from Hobart (Blues supporter), 22 Mar 2008 9:53hide comment
I like most Carlton supporters are not very impressed by what happened on Friday night. After all the build up it seems nothing was changed since last year. I really cant see us winning more than 4-5 games throught the year. I would like to know if Brett Ratten had the boys doing any tackling over the pre-season as not much stuck all night. Fev was ordinary and Judd was clearly under done. I will still keep following in hope and im looking forward to being in Melbourne in 2 weeks to watch them take on Essendon but would just like to see them have a red hot go!!
Tarrant from Melbourne (Blues supporter), 21 Mar 2008 20:08hide comment
The forward line seemed to be the issue. Unfortunately, Fev, Edwards and Betts are all players who can be very low-percentage when the pressure is on. In the first quarter, Fev was very good at doing the sensible thing, but you could see in the final quarter when the pressure was on that he went back to the low-percentage snaps. Betts continually needs to be told to run and baulk instead of just snapping - we know he can do it, but he shouldn't need to be told so frequently. 2.8 scored after the 25 point lead was established says it all.

Jamison will be an interesting player - it is clear that he can smash anybody on the lead, but is very vulnerable to the high body-on-body contest, and we remember this from his contest with Lloyd last year. Unfortunately, well-rounded players like Lloyd and Richo will be able to beat him overhead.

I went to the game the last night and I like many Carlton supporters was disappointed by the loss and also sort of frustrated. But like they say it was only round one and see what he rest of the season brings for us. What were your views of the Game?
1 reply show reply
Marissa from Montrose (Blues supporter), 21 Mar 2008 10:56hide comment
Yep, like many others, I was very frustrated and walked out saying 'we played like ****'. There was a minority that put in and did the best they could. I felt that we didn't want to win, we panicked under pressure and 9/10 times past kicked the ball to the tigers. It is only round one and I'm hopeing Rats gets in there and gives them a bit of an ear full.
But hey... Richmond didn't play much better. They only won it in the last quarter.
Ryan from Hobart (Blues supporter), 20 Mar 2008 23:02hide comment
well..well...girls need i say that. i had put a carton on us winning tonight?
no, im very ****in pissed of bout the game, but i did see some good signs. watch hadley and stevens over the next four weeks. they are lovin the attention on judd... it will be great to get walker and fisher back. its not over yet. they just need some advice, judd couldn't of done any more, it an eighteen man team. he played well, just need =s to teach the young ones about presence and mobility around the ground. it will take six months. much to our dissapointment. love u guys. as brothers and sisters. **** the magpies
