sad for scotty west
its very unfortunate that afl footy is such a multi million dollar business. on one hand i understand scooty west being told he is not wanted. age, body, list and youth policy are all very valid. butttttttt i cant help but think what he has done for that footy club over a long long time he deserved 12 months.(body, knee pending)

I think it was based on his knee, and also the fact that Cross is pretty much his clone and Boyd is a similar player as well.

However, 7 best and fairests, a ****load of brownlow votes, bulldogs team of the century... it better have been based soley on his knee or i wont be buying a membership next year.

Harvey, West and Crawf all deserve(d) a premiership, now Crawf is the only one left with a chance.

C'mon Ryan the last thing the club needs is fickle supporters. I understand where you are coming from and I feel really sad for him, and slightly affected by the news and it seems wrong that he has missed his opportunity to compete for a flag. But he has had pretty much all year to recover and every time he gets into heavy training again he re injures himself.

I'm no doctor but I have done permanent damage to my knee playing netball and a serious knee injury needs more than 6 or 8 weeks rest, especially when your body is getting older you dont heal as fast as you used to. I guess the question is should they have left him on the long term injury list and just see how it goes. Out of sheer loyalty to the great man, maybe, but do you really see that as a step forward for the Dogs?

I dont mean to sound cold, but I'm all for the youth policy. Look at the most consistent players for the season, Cross, Boyd, Morris, Harbrow, Lake, Griffo, Hargrave, Coons, all under 25. Now look at the older fellas, Aker, Johnno, Welsh, they struggled for the latter part of the season. I'm not saying get rid of them but I think the more youth you can develop the better, but you need to find the right balance. And we need to put as much focus as we can on finding/developing a big bodied forward IMO.

As much as Westy would be hurting ATM I so hope he gets a job within the club, I think we still need him around even if he's not playing anymore......

Good on Ryan I say!

Don't think he is being a fickle supporter Kristy. Is only saying what many Bulldog supporters including Doug Hawkins think. If the medical opinion is West's knee is shot then right decision by the club. If they have decided to go with a youth policy then the Bulldogs have SHAME written over them for 2009. West is a favourite son and deserves to say when he wishes to retire. Besides his knee this year he has had a really good run with injuries, more importantly almost no soft tissue damage.

Hopefully West decides to retire as a one club great but I would think a few Melbourne clubs would take the risk. A pick in the 80's in the national draft would be golden if he is medically cleared. Imagine if Collingwood picked him up and they knocked the Bulldogs out in the prelim next year with West gathering 30 touches.

Retiring greats need to be handled with kit gloves. The Bulldogs it appears have stuffed this up and fancy doing it after Cooney wins the Brownlow.

However Ryan, if you don't buy a membership next year in protest ensure you do the year after as the Bulldogs need every member they can get.

Sorry but where is the shame in a struggling club investing in it's youth? West hasn't played since round 4 and from doctors recommendations I've heard due to the fact that his injury has become degenerative even if he does come good to play next year (which can I just say that if there was any chance of this he would be still on the team) that he will either end up arthritic or in need of a full replacement.

I know this will sound harsh and I mean no disrespect to him because he has been a loyal servant to the club from day one but when you have a player like Dylan Addison who had a fantastic start to the year and was involved in every win until he injured his knee, which threatened to end his season, yet 8 weeks later he's back in the VFL, in contention for selection after only 8 weeks. Look my point is whatever way you look at it Westie had no real impact on the year except in the first game, so if, and it is a big if he's right for next season it'll be 12 months since he has played AFL. Regardless of how his injury pans out when you are pushing 34 it's jut not likely to work in your favor. The club IMO made the right choice and when all this blows over, he'll slot into a position in the coaching/development staff at the Bulldogs. And we'll all live happily ever after.....

Yeah good call. If Westie was playing for Collingwood it would be poetic justice for him if the Pies beat the Dogs in next years finals series lol! Either way, wherever he goes he'll be respected no matter what. I reckon we should have kept him playing for Williamstown until he was 100%. I don't think we gave him a good enough chance to get back up on the field. A knee is a delicate part of the body and West needed more time - from now to season '09 would have been perfect.
Yeah and Ryan needs to realize that supporters (no matter from what club) are supporters and should never stop giving that. Just because a club makes an error it should never be an excuse for us to not renew memberships.

Cheers man - your were right on the money with the draft picking thing. If the Magpies pick him up they would definitely give him a run.

I admit I may have been over-reacting, lol. I will buy a membership, and hope that Scott decides to stay on as a midfield coach. Still think it was a shocking decision by the club.

Good on ya man! Hehehehe that's cool frustrating it is indeed with clubs making silly decisions at times. Good move by renewing membership champ :-D

C'mon man. If your reading this don't do that - it's reactions like that that put clubs into dire straits just like Melbourne's situation. Get the membership and support the Dogs mate - you will find that your reaction be of a disservice for you or the club.

the way things are going there won't be a player in the afl over 30 years old in 10 years time with nearly every club going with the youth policy.surely you need a good mix of youth and experience and a bloke like scotty west would be worth his weight in gold with the young blokes coming through the ranks.even if he only got onto the park a dozen times next year(including a couple of finals) he wouldn't be a waste of a spot on the list, teams need older wiser heads as well as youth & speed for a good mix
John from Melbourne (Bulldogs supporter), 24 Sep 2008 21:14hide comment
West you're a champion and cheers for what you gave to the Bulldogs. A shame to go that way but he's done great things for the club and himself as a player and wish him the very best. So many a good player from many clubs brought down by the scourge of injury...

yes..its becoming a young man game..unfortunately. But the guys a champ..what a way to go.

I suspect he would have retired anyway. When a club is in its premiership window, it can't afford to let romance dictate its list management.
