Tasmanian team or Western Sydney?
Bottom line for this is that we need to get things straight. Much discussion has taken place on this issue in forums unrelated to this topic so I thought I'd bite the bullet and throw it in. I know this topic has been possibly posted before but this is a simple, straightforward survey of which team you would rather have in the AFL. Its purpose is for the fact to highlight how out of touch the AFL administration/board is and basically how arrogant the board members can be at times when making crucial marketing decisions that effect the long-term investments, assets and benefits of the game. To get the ball rolling I'll include my reasons (please include yours also as this can generate informed discussion and greater support for a Tassie side that more than deserves to have a team represent it):

1. Tasmania is a state that embraces football, not rugby.
2. NSW is a state that embraces the rugby code, thus making a market for a second Sydney football team harder to maintain a feasible existence.
3. Sydney should have more supporters than it already does (and deserves to) and supposedly people from Western Sydney would be supporting them.
4. If these supporters do leave the Swans and choose to follow their new side, how will then Sydney generate new support members?

If West Coast/Fremantle and Adelaide/Port Adelaide are used as examples to argue against my reasoning, my response to that is that their success would be measured by the fact that football is exclusive to these areas of Australia. It's like bringing in a second Melbourne rugby side... not feasible.

This is not an attack on any Sydney supporter or Sydney dweller - your input would be greatly appreciated as your opinion counts also even if you don't agree.

I will present a few options.

1.split a team between the 2 plays half its home games at tassie and half its home games at west sydney, say just have 16 home games or something and then what ever state draws a higher average crowd, money into the team and more members gets the team.

2. a players vote on were they would prefer, through the AFLPA it wouldn't be too hard to organise.

3. create both teams and then another team in perth.

Check the Herald Sun last Friday. The players voted for Western Sydney.

Very strange indeed - I guess we can only see what happens when Western Sydney does come into the league.

Incidentally, the highest money earner of those three options would probably be to do option 1 on a regular basis. Acquire fans in both states for a team that doesn't technically belong to either. But obviously that would never happen

TASSIE!

they are passionate about their football and to establish a Tasmanian team would do so much economically for the state, even as a result of Hawks playing a few games there each season has given Hobart a boost.

NSW traditionally a rugby state have one team in the sydney swans but the way i see it.....think of the NRL proposing a West Melbourne side in the NRL against the Storm?

Would we really deserve a 2nd NRL team when we are traditionally the AFL state before maybe a Western Australian team?

a couple of weeks ago i would've said western sydney but after only 19,000 people turned up to a final i would have to say it would be unfair for tasmania so i say tasmania
Rebecca from Melbourne (Magpies supporter), 15 Sep 2008 21:43hide comment
I would have to say Tasmania. I think it would be great for them to be involved in the AFL... NSW is rugby and they struggle to get numbers to sydney games over there... I cant see why Tasmania wouldnt work...

Financially it will give Tassie a boost as well... :-)

Tasmanian team? thats a bit out there.. we are too little for starters and seriously its bad enough having Hawthorn as a tasmanian team let alone one of our own.. i just dont think they have what it takes.. but boring who likes sydney anyway.. why can't they have a Northern Territory side?

Climate. The NTFL is played over summer because winter is too oppressive.

TASSIE. more people would turn out at the tassie games then the West Sydney games.
I prefer to go to tassie for footy games then Sydney.

I think we should move Collingwood to Tassie.

Oh why would you want to do that to the poor people of Tasmania lol.
Matt from Warrnambool (Tigers supporter), 14 Sep 2008 20:51hide comment
Tassie for sure. They will get the Sate right behind them. If Sydney finish bottom four next season they will be lucky to ave 15,000 per home game. So why would you want another Sydney team.
Karen from Exmouth (Kangaroos supporter), 14 Sep 2008 2:25hide comment
I think Tasmania should be given a shot at it. The region has produced many fine players. Because of its close proximity to Melbourne you would get supporters travelling between the states for the games.
