The reason for Carlton's woes
Carltons woes are due bad executive management and to the nature of the salary cap and drafting and the cyclical effect it has on any competition. the cap is designed to make for an even playing field and the draft is designed to give struggling, often ageing teams their best chance of rebuilding a youth/skill depleted list.

bad management meant that within a five year period carlton lost 2 years worth of priorty draft picks, was fined just over a million dollars and went on to acquire the spoon. this will and did prompt memberships to fall.

and when membership falls - sponsorship falls.

when you look at those factors and put them together - you haven't got a hope in hell of rebuilding a compeditive list in the following 5-10 years.

it's just down to bad management - it disolves the safety net that the salary cap and draft provide a struggling club.

the other point you seem to miss is that interstate clubs receive more in their cap than that of victorian clubs, giving them an edge - it amounts to about 300 - 500k extra depending on the club - that can mean the difference between retaining a star or losing him.

this is a bone of contention with all victorian clubs but due to the afl's committment to grow the game and keep interstate memberships sky high (bums on seats = $ for the alf) this is something we victorians will just have deal with.

and as for interstate talent - you have 1-2 clubs that can pick and develop players from grass root level from a whole state full of players, vic has to support 10 clubs.

carlton were are a great club regardless of how you look at it - we made some big mistakes and are still paying for them but we're still here. i have one-eyed pies supporters as good friends and there is nothing better that pies v carlton, we like winning and that's something i held little hope for in 06 and 07 but i still loved the games. collingwood is probable the team who i'd miss the most if something were to happen to them and most pies feel the same, not that this will ever happen - all levels of management are just too strong.

Personally I point a lot of the blame at John Elliott. He robbed the club blind and left them for dead. Carlton should deport him to the Middle East.

A disgrace to what, Marcus? I like good footy and I'm sick of the BS people come up with when they've got nothing rational, intelligent or even valid to add. If a team wants my respect, they gotta earn it. Ups to Geelong for having a good season, Ups to collingwood for making their way through a 15 year drought of beating us at home and ups to port for having such a good season (despite the grand final loss). That's the way I put it. The eagles will continue to do well and they are my favourite team but it's footy I love and it's footy I'll support. Carlton just don't have it, and all the "your an idiot" type comments in the world (this includes the "your a disgrace" which is really a more intelligent way of saying what Juliana is trying to... and on that note, I stopped saying the word "****s" back when I was in primary school) are not going to change it. Until they prove it, they will continue to be ranked behind Collingwood in their ability to win a premiership in the near future.

I am just teasing juliana because she acts like an 8 year old spoilt brat and has not added one hint of intelligent conversation into any board anywhere. She continues to claim she has opinions worth reading, but all the name calling in the world have just made her look like an idiot. I tried to refrain from making her look like more of a fool (as she does a pretty good job herself) but I couldn't help it. It's become really entertaining. Just because she supports the blues like you doesn't necessarily justify supporting her in her stupid, useless comments about absolutely nothing. I would rip into an eagles supporter who did the same thing, it's just unnecessary and would create more of a hatred towards the club and it's supporters from the competition. AFL is not about "we are the best and you all suck" it's a team game about class, skill and working your ass off to get to the top. Regardless of which team does it, due respect to whomever does, I just like the good footy. Yes I support the eagles the most, but I don't get off when we thwap sydney or port.. it's just a good game and I'm glad we win some. We lose some too, but I aint gonna go around whinging about it and calling the opposing team a bunch of dickheads... where does that get me? we still lost and will have to do better. I consider that a reasonable, realistic approach, whether you agree or not.

At least you admit that carlton is a struggling club. and that's all I've been saying. You cant argue that carlton is doing better than the eagles, or even collingwood at the moment, because they're just not. They don't make the 8. Despite the history (which I admit is good for carlton) the bottom line is we are only concerned with the now, not what happened 15 years ago. Any club can win say 10 premierships then become extinct 15 years later because they make some bad decisions, lose sponsors, supporter base and money and just go down the drain. And at that point, nobody can sit there and say "but we won more premierships than you so you all suck and we're gonna whip your sorry asses" see what I mean yet?

Regardless of the salary cap and a clubs ability to retain talent, think about the clubs recruitment of draftees and their training to mold these young players into stars. Only as an example, take what the eagles have. We are just pushing out star after star and we don't even get priority picks. Our recruiters, in fact our whole club works together to make stars out of what we got, and that's talent and that's a good footy club. In no way am I saying the eagles are better than all other teams, it's just an example. Any club can win a game, but few make it to a premiership. Geelong have done very well last season but now they're under pressure to keep their talent as the money starts to become a factor to these players once they've tasted premiership glory.

Yes Victoria has to support 10 clubs, but each club has its own ability to deal with what it has and make good footy. Its just as hard for the eagles to get up there as it is collingwood, and credit goes to the people who keep both clubs alive.

Yes carlton was a great club. I've never said they weren't great in the past. They're just not doing so well now, and all I have done is state the facts. You're not doing so good so no supporter in their right mind can realistically compare the success of a club like collingwood (or the eagles, port, or even geelong for that matter) last season because it just wasn't there.

Well I love a good Freo Vs Eagles western derby. We win some and lose some but in the end is a good contest and I enjoy watching it. So there's my bit although I am getting really sick of repeating myself.

(Hi Robert, sorry I've taken a break from living on facebook to ride my new motorcycle haha)

Who else here thinks that robert and stuart make a lovely couple??????

hahahahahahahaha

you know what stuart, bag me all you like. You are about as insignificant as they come. Unlike you and your mate robert there, I have a life and don't spend my life in here arguing about footy. everyone has their own opinion and if you don't like it, don't read it!!! Youve been spending way too much time in our page and to be honest no-one wants to hear or cares what you have to say. The blues will be better this year and that IS my opinion and i have every right to voice it. So you and Robert can just go off and be together somewhere else because everyone is really becoming sooo sick of your self rightousness.

Go the Blues!!!!!!!!!

You know what Juliana your the one that goes round bagging everyone. Name calling etc etc Now you start to sook up when people bite back. Maybe you should take a differant angle and realize that this is about having fun. Just as Trent knows this is about fun. Collingwood and Carlton are going to be around long after youu and I are long gone. (well Collingwood will be anyway) So why don't you try a new approach. Losen up and you might start to enjoy yourself. I'm only going by what people are writing. I do understand your anger as Carlton continually let you guys down. So vent your anger at Carlton and keep this forum free of your vitriol. xxx

ha ha you are funny. I don't "Sook Up" im just sick of your crap to be honest robert. You have no life, coz all you do is annoy people with crap about collingwood.

Carlton let me down??? Listen to this. They may have had some lean years in the past 6 but let me tell you this, id rather barrack for them than anyone else. 1995 - we had a year the likes of you could only dream about - losing 2 games for the whole year!!!! Carlton DO NOT continually let us down, they have given us history to be proud of.

You are the very reason collingwood is hated so vehmenantly but you know what, ROBERT, ive decieded what you think is irrelevant. Clearly you have no life because everytime i venture on here youve attacked me or someone on here so i think YOURE the sad one. This is MY teams forum and if your don't like it, GET OUT. and I do enjoy myself, this has given me as much of a kick also, listening to you nuff nuffs thinking you know it all.

Go the BLUES!!!!!!!!

Marcus . If u care to read one of my reply's some where on this page u will find that it is i who say It all about having good fun. Now i hear what ur saying so am i to understand that what Elliot did was due to bad management. And not plain out and out rorting the system. He knew what he had to do to keep Kouta. So to me and everyone else it's called cheating. Not bad management. You offend me. Every other club has the same rules so why should Carlton be any different. And for what it is worth i dont really want to see Carlton fold or any club for that matter. Futher more any belittling i have done is a reaction to reply's like ****,feral, losser and so on by a certain nice Italian girl from the south of Italy i susspect and she goe's by the name of JULIANA. Feel free to read her reply's and it will soon become apparent that it is her that first started name calling not only to me but also to Stuart. ( Hi Stuart ) I have also called her a good sport. Between u and i Marcus i think Juliana is hot for me but as i have said some where in one of my reply's to her that it can never work between us. I think she is ok about it. lol. I grew up in Collingwood and i have a few freinds that follow Carlton as well. I have no probs with this as it has made for good stirring over the last 5 or so years. And we are still good friends to this day. I look forward to many years of great football between all clubs. So i wll say it again it,s all about having good fun. cheers.
