New Interchange Rule
I attended the Saints v Hawks match tonight and was bemused by something that occurred. Hawthorn kicked a goal and St Kilda received a free kick and a 50 metre penalty gifting them a goal.

It was an interchange infringement as I discovered Sunday morning.

If the infringement occurred as Hawthorn was kicking the goal then the goal should have been disallowed and the free kick and 50 metre penalty given.
However if the infringement occurred after the goal was kicked then play has stopped and time on blown. Therefore there is no infringement as long as the extra player is off before the ball is bounced.

Does this not make sense??

No I'm not saying that at all. What I questioning is the fairness of it. Hawthorn didn't have any advantage at all by a minor infringement and would have had the 18 players on the field when the ball was bounced. Instead St Kilda received a gift goal that meant it was the end of the contest. I'm surely not saying it cost Hawthorn the game, but the sting was removed as a result of the a bull**** rule.

I thought the rule was that if you have over 18 players on the field at any time you will be penalized. I was watching the game on telly and it looked to me as though the breach occurred as the ball was being carried back to the center.

Kristy,

Bad luck on Saturday though Sunday's Herald Sun front page was bull****. The Dogs are traveling well and it was time for a challenge. They might have come up short but have 6 rounds to correct things that didn't work against the Cats. What have they lost?? Nothing still second but did they show all the aces up their sleeves?? I don't think so.

Have a look at my earlier reply to Matt. What occurred on Saturday night was a disgrace and isn't fair.

I'm pretty sure the interchange infringement can be called whether time is on or off - although I have noticed them being lenient when there is a blood rule.

Are you sure it was interchange infringement? The emergency umpire would have entered the ground if it was. I didn't watch the game.
