The Beauty of AFL-By an Indian fan!
I came to Australia in 2002 (from India) and fell in love with the Aussie Rules. Now since I was following AFl in my first year in Melbourne, I had to pick a team and I became A Magpies supporter because I loved their guernsey (as simple as that). I had no knowledge of AFL records, premierships won/lost etc. But after I got into the league, I started reading about records, statistics etc. Infact I was damn lucky that the PIES made it into the grand final in 2002 itself, considering that (if I am right), they were the wooden spooners in 2000. That for me is the great drama on which AFL thrives.

Now I am back in India after having finished my studies. In my country, apart from cricket, there is a huge passion for Barclay's Premier League Soccer. I too follow it (though not as passionately as AFL) and when I had to pick a team for BPL, I chose Newcastle United (Magpies). Now, the thing with BPL is that season after season, it is certain that only the team belonging in the "Big Four" (Manchester United,Chelsea,Arsenal.Liverpool) have a chance of winning the Premiership. It becomes boring and very monotonous. No wonder that people in India who follow the BPL, usually support one of these "Big Four" clubs!
And this I am talking about a Football League which has 92 clubs spread across 4 divisions.

Coming back to AFL, it gives every club and their supporters a reason to dream! 2004-2006 had 3 consecutive Grand Finals featuring non-Victorian sides and now in 2008, the Top 4 might not have even one interstate team. Ohhh the beauty lies in the unexpectancy of this great league!
Ofcourse, since there is no promotion/relegation scenario, the season becomes a drag for clubs that lose most of their first 7-8 games (ask the Demons) but nonetheless following an AFL club is much more exciting than barracking for a team in the English Premier League (which isn't part of the "Big Four").

In my opinion, I found Australia a country that does (in most cases) give everyone a fair go-provided you want to compete! AFL for me is a league that compliments this. All the teams have a fair chance-no monopolies here, even the great Brisbane Lions of the 2000's had to surrender their crown! Go AFL and Go the PIES!

Great post Vi****! I've often wondered what international visitors make of our great game and have thought that it would probably be very difficult to understand if you hadn't grown up with it. However, you've done well and obviously appreciate the skills, athleticism and competitiveness of the game. You made the right choice as far as being a Collingwood supporter too - they give you something every week, have an amazing history and look after their supporters. Be prepared for heartbreak though.

Go you! For making me realise how lucky I am to reside in the heartland of my football club. I hope you can get back to Melbourne for the PiesvDoggies grand Final this year LOL, I know I'm dreaming but seriously how good would that be.

And since you mention the Victorian dominance this year hows this for a fact, round 14 and round 15 are the first 2 consecutive rounds ever that not one interstate side recorded a win. Dont ya just feel all warm and fuzzy now?

The last year in which there was no interstate team in the AFL Finals??

Well there has never been an occurence in the history of the AFL.

The last time was 1989. That was the last year of the VFL.

I bring this up because this could be history. Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane are looking like punch drunk boxers. Carlton, North, Essenden and even Richmond are playing more like finalists.

Id like to personally say thanks for choosing the Magpies, we are defiantely an awesome club and the love and passion is like no other... We are definately the most loved and definatley the most hated but its all good...
Hopefully you can come back to Australia before the end of season and enjoy a few more games, and i pray even more so that its a winning grand final... Oh the joy... lol...
Go Pies...

Awesome stuff Vi****, enjoy your footy! I'm living overseas where footy basically hasn't been heard of, and when asked what I miss most about Oz, footy's the first thing that comes to mind. I consider myself very lucky to have grown up in Oz and know about our great game. I can't imagine life without it. I don't know if there are teams or a league set up in India, but maybe there's something or you to work on....

Oh, the Pies last wooden spoon (and only their second ever) was in 1999 btw

Thanks for posting this, a much more positive read than the rubbish that makes up most of the posts on here.

Thanks Nicholas! I am actually very passionate about AFL (and Collingwood). I want to be back in Melbourne and want to live and work there just because of Footy! The rush of blood and emotions that one get let's say in jam packed MCG on ANZAC day amidst 90 000 odd passionate supporters is somthink that can only be felt! It is almost like a feeling when you watch a Cricket match between India & Australia at Eden Gardens (Kolkata).
