Given the fact the Pies need to win a premiership within the next few years, hopefully from 2010 and beyond...if we can get that far, and the fact that Mick Malthouse was his VERY 1st coach, I think it would be of an excellent addition to have Cuz on our team...so that when we play against the mighty Blues who have Juddy, we can crush 'em with Cuz like a bunch of fickle old mushheads!!

Ben Cousins will firstly be judged as a footballer by any prospective club.
As a footballer he is a champion, with the recent upgrade of stars such as Franklin and Ablett maybe no longer top 5.
Being 30 will he add something to a team list or are they rebuilding??
Finally the club will have to take a hard look at themselves and ask a few ????
Is our leadership stong enough?
Are our kids of good enough quality to know right or wrong?
Are their any members of the playing list against the possible drafting of Counsins?
What would the reaction of our sponsors be?

Cousins is a risk no doubt but a risk that could bring the premiership cup to a club's door or for a team such as Geelong ensure Top 4 is a given. His Dad played for them so some romance there. Forget Carlton the risk to a young list is too great plus they have Fev already, Richmond yes only cause they always make bad recruiting decisions, Kangas nope shinboner spirit, Essenden nope enough problems already, Melbourne ditto. No way Hawthorn already have had the negative press re drugs and their own high profile players. Bulldogs nope Aka has already made it known he wouldn't be happy potential All Australian his opinion will be respected.
I believe Cousins likely club will be either Sydney or Collingwood. Sydney provides a strong club with a healthy respect among the Eagles player's. Collingwood has his 1st AFL coach and father figure in Malthouse as well as the requirement of a midfield star.
Regardless drug addiction is prevalent in our society and a successful return might just inspire other addicts that it can be achieved. Remember the feel good stories of Steve Johnson after winning the Norm Smith last year, multiply that by 100 or so.

I definatly agree, Sydney could handle cousins but personally i will be shocked if Ben doesnt end up wearing anything but a collingwood jumper next year. Collingwood are 1 short of a high quality midfielder and Ben would fill that hole quite nicely, to me his age shouldnt matter much. Other clubs have taken older guys in the draft like Hawthorn with Stuart Dew and its worked. So if cousins is 100% send him to Collingwood

Sydney also provides better access to drugs, he'll feel right at home

How does Sydney provide "better access to drugs", what a stupid comment.

It's a bigger market -more nightlife, more entertainment, more demand for drugs - pure economics. Not so stupid...

Guy (Magpies supporter), 30 Jun 2008 23:50hide comment
Really the size of the market is irrelevant. Dealers look to boost their ego's by hanging out with "celebrities", they will seek him out like many others. Maybe Sydney is too big of a market, and therefore product is diluted, I don't know. Hence why it was such a stupid comment.

The major theme in this thread is that he is too big of a risk to take. I want to present another perspective on things.

Stuart Dew was picked up this year after a full year out of the game and is having an ok season with the Hawks. Now im not comparing a drug addiction to weight/fitness issues but they are both reasons as to why a club would not want to recruit a guy. Hawthorn took a risk because they knew they needed a little bit of experience in their squad.

Ben Cousins was a much much better player than Dew at any time. So will a club take a risk on him? I think they will. I dont know who and i dont know how well he will do, but i think at least one club will consider the possible payoff work the risk.

Former captain, premiership player, brownlow medalist, mulitiple all australian, multiple best and fairest. Lots of positives!

Hi Baxter, I totally agree with you on this one, I've actually seen him around Melbourne a couple of times, and recent news suggests that he's really wanting to get back into it. I mean seriously if the guy wants to play and if he's got his act together I really think he deserves one last chance, and i hope a club like the Tigers pick him up. Wallace hasn't ruled him out, which is good theres no doubt in my mind that he would lift any midfield that he plays in. Really it's just a matter of who wants to take the risk as you said.

Hi Kristy. Thanks for your support. I like it when people, as you put it, "totally agree" with me.

I mean obviously i dont know him personally, but I love the way he plays, he is undeniably one of the best players of recent times and i know the Wayne Carey comparison is all too easy and putting aside all his post playing career controversy. Wayne did actually admit in a recent interview that there was not a weekend during his playing career that he didn't drink. Did the media condemn him at the him for this? Absolutely not, he was nothing but an absolute star at the height of his career...

im sorry guys, but i just reckon hes never gonna be over it, therell be another scandal or allegation, and hell be back in the sh!t again,

however, although i say this, id still take him at essendon, thats a list of achievements you have to take notice of

But just remember...the only issue with Wayne Carey at the time was injuries and personal saga's...not drugs...that came long after he had finished at Adelaide

If any club does take him I think that that club will follow the hawks lead and only give him a 1 year deal, take a pay cut and have a really strick contract.

As a Swans supporter do we need him?? I dont think so but i do think that the swans may take him if he is keen

Tarrant from Melbourne (Blues supporter), 27 Jun 2008 21:09hide comment
Realistically, he would be of help to a team pressing into their premiership windows, but lacking in the ruck - all teams in their windows have good midfields, but the value of a guy like Cousins on the ground can make up for a deficiency in the ruck. The way I see it, that makes him a reasonable fit at the Magpies or Crows. I don't think he'd fit well at North, though, as they have enough older midfielders.

didnt stop Adelaide getting Wayne Carey and Ronnie Burns who were well past it.
At least Cousins appears fit and could play 3 more years in the AFL at a high level.

He will go to Collingwood for sure(if he goes anywhere). We don't need him at Carlton, but I must say after watching him last night on the footy show, I wouldn't mind watching him every week. How gorgeous was he!!! I didn't think he could get any better but he has especially with his growth.
Terry from Kerang (Bombers supporter), 27 Jun 2008 7:38hide comment
i wasn't really convinced by his interview on the footy show last night, he seemed to have that cock sure attitude that could upset the culture at some clubs, too bigger risk i reckon

CARLTON and North Melbourne led Wednesday's chorus in saying they would not draft Ben Cousins in his anticipated comeback and similar views were aired by Melbourne, Hawthorn, Essendon and Port Adelaide.

The Sydney Swans, Adelaide and Fremantle also declared a lack of interest in the former West Coast Eagles captain.

However, Collingwood, the Western Bulldogs, Richmond, St Kilda and Geelong would not rule out the possibility of recruiting the 2006 premiership player and four-time Eagles best and fairest.

Tigers assistant coach Brian Royal said while Richmond was also on the youth path â€" the primary reason given by the Blues and the Roos â€" that did not necessarily mean a veteran of Cousins' ability could not aid that process.

"You just can't say, 'No, we're not going to go after Ben Cousins,'" Royal told Melbourne sports radio station SEN.

"Probably we'll look at it two ways. As long as he's fully rehabilitated, does he come into our midfield? Does he take the spot of one of our up-and-coming developing midfielders?

"That could be the case.

"Or does he come into your midfield with his experience of being a Brownlow Medallist, a premiership player, a captain? Does he come in and actually teach your midfielders certain aspects of the game which have helped him over the years?

"So you can look at both sides of things."

stkilda need his toughness and skill. nothing else though. micheal gardnier being there may have an effect on whether or not the saints go for him. doubt they will though.
Tarrant from Melbourne (Blues supporter), 26 Jun 2008 13:55hide comment
Carlton has no need for him: the midfield is the area that we are least deficient.
Christopher from Altona (Bulldogs supporter), 26 Jun 2008 10:10hide comment
He doesn't need to be on the AFL stage really.Cousins is always going to have some kind of audience where ever he goes.
He's acheived all the major goals of AFL. He doesn't need to come back to prove anything other then he is still fit to play Footy and he can do that elsewhere anyway! I'm sure we won't miss the headlines when he plays his first game with whatever team he joins, talking about his fitness and comments about it all.

He'll probably be better off playing for VFL.
