Super players in the bottom 50
All this talk of top ten draft picks, I've found some super players that were nowhere near top ten in the years they were drafted;

1995 Bradshaw 55
1996 Cam Mooney 56
1997 Goodes 43
1998 Fev 38
1999 Linsay Gilbee 43
2000 was an interesting year with Nick Reiwoldt , Kozi and Didak at 1st 2nd and 3rd respectively, Jordan Mcmahon of all players at 10 and Daniel Kerr at number 18, Daniel Cross at 56, and Corey Jones at 60.
2001 also was interesting with Judd at pick 3, Graham Polak at number 4, X Clarke 5, above Jimmy Bartel at number 8 and amazingly enough at number 40 was guess who Gary Ablett jnr.
2002 Nick Melceski at 64
2003 Amon Buchanan 45
2004 Travis Cloke 39

So I guess the point I'm really trying to make is that there are too many factors involved in becoming the best player you can be. Your position on the national draft almost irrelevant. Game time probably the main thing. And personally I'd much rather be further down the list and have a higher chance being drafted into a winning side, than be pick one or two and have to join a struggling side with a label of number 1 draft pick, the expectations on you are enormous. Any thoughts?

Travis Cloke and Gary Ablett don't count, as they were F/S selections. (Same with Matthew Scarlett).

There are also the rookies who become super players as well. The key is that few players have fully developed their skills or intelligence by the time they reach 18. It's not like the States where players are drafted out of the college system at the age of 22-23; there is definitely a lot more luck and development about it. I think the successful Irish experiments are proof that players can be developed.

Obviously there are the Eli Manning and Eric Lindros stories from the States about top draft picks who had enough clout to refuse to play with the bottom teams, and that does highlight the difficult situation top picks are put in.

Tarrant, would you mind explaining to me why they still end up in the draft even though they are father and son?

What Andrew said. Although they've now changed that so that teams bid for potential sons. The team who bids the highest draft pick then has to take the son in the draft, unless the father's team elects to use its next selection to take him.
Andrew from Suzhou (Lions supporter), 21 Jun 2008 23:48 hide comment
Father Son draftees go in the 3rd round, so the club still has to use a draft pick, they don't get them automatically as such.

Ablett was talked about as a top 5 pick had he not been selected under the Father/Son method.

Take a look at some of the rookie drafted players: Nathan Foley, Matt Priddis, Dean Cox, Aaron Sandilands, Marty Clarke.

or maybe players can step up to the level of the rest of the league better. or maybe that those clubs have better youth training n that. i no west coast and geelong have good facilities to help there players get the most outta em.

also i think andrew thompson for a pick 62 was a great asset n servant to stkilda over the time he played there.

sam fisher was pick number 55 in 03. hes having a great career for a number 55.

Thats gotta be one of the keys doesn't it youth training and facilities, all of them are young when they get drafted (unless they are traded) and most of them regardless of their position in draft have taken a good couple of years to really get going.

I think another huge factor is the personal dynamics of the players as a group I mean look a Freo last night, Bell, Sandilands, Pavlich and Rhys Palmer are the only players that really stood out, I'd love Pav to come to the Bulldogs, I really believe he is wasted talent at the moment. Well done to Ross Lyon for his controversial changes yesterday. Extremes can really pay off sometimes.

mm yeah but poor allen. i hope he isnt a sign of wat ross lyon wants the players to paly like. at one stage he was on the wing. took a mark and could have easily played on and pumped it into the forward line but instead he held the ball up...and waited... and waited... and the whistle went and he waited... and then he got in all sorts of trouble and turned it over.

anywayz yeah youth training and facilities is def a key part. talent can only get you so far.
