I've given up on AFL. (Almost).
It's become rediculous. Umpires now have far too much say in how the game turns out. I used to love watching 2 teams fight it out to the end, but the umps now give far to many frees in front of goal, and 50's that turn into frees in front of goal. It's no longer a game of skill between 2 teams. It's just a game between 2 teams and the umpires.

I wonder if anyone has done the stats on how many goals are kicked as the direct result of an umpiring decision. Would be nice to compare it to 5 years ago.

G'day Andrew,

I'm not talking about bias ir one sided free kicks. I'm just peeved with the fact that the frees umpires give, which are there to be given under the current laws of the game, have such a big effect on the outcome of some games.

The hand in the back rule is just one of the new crap rules that has spoiled the game. The new interchange rule with a free + 50 being given will result in more umpire induced scores.

It's crap when an umpiring decision or two, or three can decide the result of a game.

Five years ago (2002 to be exact) I was livid with what I thought was biasm by umpires towards Brisbane.

That year (as is probably true for all reigning premiers) Brisbane topped the most number of penalties given, and I think was last for penalties received...

But I don't think its got any worse, there's just more coverage now - more TV cameras.

But there always are those games that just don't seem fair, but we all have to live with it.
