The AFL Needs Greater Vision for Representative Football
I really think that the AFL has missed a vital epoch in the advancement of representative football. These old and defunct notions of state v state, state v the rest, needs revamping. Personally, I would have loved to see some initiative and vision that was more in line with city v country, East Coast v West Coast or something along these lines. The notion put forward by Gary Lyon at first sight looks and sounds exciting; however, football teams chosen on race could be polemic and divisive. I am not an advocate for nationalism but if Gary’s proposal were to become reality, a display of national unity would be advisable for obvious reasons. However, I think the AFL should focus greater attention and fiscal powers on establishing the game in as many foreign countries as possible- this is certainly the hope of Kevin Sheedy and other like minded individuals. Wouldn’t it be great, ‘some time down the road’, where Australian Rules Football was hosting an annual clash and the promotional banner read,” Australia v The World’s Nations”. This would certainly be tantalising to my football palate.

I think we have to accept that we cannot aspire to the NRL's representative football - they somehow have something special in State of Origin which is simply not recreated in any representative game world-wide. Look to America: the Pro-Bowl, NBA, NHL and MLB All-Star games are not serious competitions - the Pro-Bowl is well regarded as a holiday to Hawaii with a half-arsed game, and defenders don't bother trying in the NHL game - 8-7 scores when average is closer to 4-2. In these sports, club competition is by far the pinnacle. And so it is with the AFL - 257 points in a game when 180-odd is average. So we have to accept that the extra-physical and highly entertaining contests that State of Origin rugby provides will never happen in representative AFL.

At the same time, we have this "stick it up them" mentality that EJ left behind him - a mentality which quite simply doesn't fit with the razzle-dazzle of the games. So we're in a strange limbo.

I believe the game can only become a regular fixture if people accept it as a show-off of skills, rather than a battle for pride. If that happens, and the "stick it up them" mentality goes away, then there is a place for the Aborigines as a fourth team - because while a "stick it up the croweaters" sign in the crowd is okay, a "stick it up the " sign is not.

Take home message: never again will we have what the NRL has. Representative football can be a reward for good play in the AFL, but it will never be the battle that EJ wants.

I think you're right, but its also true that the passion and following of State of Origin in NSW and Qld is partly due to the complete lack of interest in the season proper... For a lot of Qld'ers and NSW people its the only 3 matches they watch all year

AFL has great matches every week, while, rugby league has great matches every now and then and nothing to match State of Origin...

In this regard AFL supporters are lucky

The proposal from Gary Lyon is a disgrace. Why would it be Victoria vs the Aboriginal All Stars? whats Victoria's god given right to be the State that gets represented. If there is going to be state of origin then it needs to involve all the states or then split it into a east vs west type game. Victoria cant be allowed to have full control on state games. Its no longer the VFL.
