I wish Victorian Commentators stop talking about the "demise of the Eagles"
I wish Victorian Commentators would shutup and comentate on a footy game instead of talking about and I quote the "demise of the Eagles". Considering they have lost most of the Senior player group and experienced players, I think they are doing ok with what they have. They can't always be a powerhouse of strength. Fair enough they have a long way to go before they are back to their top form but some words of encouragement would go along way. If it were an West Aussie commentator commenting on a Victorian side, all hell would break loose.

what is the issue here? Eagles had 16 premiership players in that side against a team that wont make the 8 this year and was wooden spooners last year. Basically it has become evident that the WCE have been carried by Judd, Cousins and Kerr for a very long time. Every team goes through a rebuilding stage but the fact they have had 16 to 18 premiership players all season and have gotten only 1 win isnt great. The commentators are spot on.

I disagree with you. The eagles often played fine without Judd, Cousins and Kerr. Yes we had a stellar midfield that got the ball forward when we won the premiership, but we also had people like Lynch kicking goals, Embley working magic, Hunter doing an amazing wing job, Glass shutting people down.. its a team effort. 3 midfielders did not kick all the goals, stop the other side from scoring and run all over the field. We lost two of our most senior/leadership players who everyone looked up to. Cousins was the spirit of the eagles before he screwed himself over, Judd was the nice guy always willing to help out and work as a team. Its hard on the younger players to see the talent leave, they have to now pick up to fill the missing shoes and its a substantial effort for any player. Kerr is as good as Judd when he plays well (and controls his temper) and priddis is a rising superstar in my opinion. We are going through a rebuilding phase where we have plenty of talent we have to work into the mix. We haven't had to push so hard on younger players for a long time and every team goes through the "rebuilding" stage. But I doubt it will take us as long as some other teams... we have it there we just got to make it work. It seems the players are becoming increasingly frustrated by their own mistakes, as was the case against carlton. The boys may not have a good season this year but I wouldn't rule them out for the near future. The "demise" of the eagles is as entertaining as the "rise" of carlton, it IS annoying when commentators speculate because just because they have their opinion doesn't mean people agree with it, it is right, or it is fair to say it.

i agree that you played well when missing a few of those blokes in the past but it seems that some of your senior players are not standing up without these blokes. I mean 3/4 of your team are premiership players and that was only a few years ago. Is it a case of not grooming enough youngsters during those years to take the next step? im not sure. I think its safe to say though that the WCE forward line has been mediocre for a long time now. Lynch is decent but you have had no one else up there bar Phil Matera and that was back in 2005. Now without those gun midfielders getting it in there you are struggling. McKinley looks a long term prospect and hopefully Kennedy proves his trade worth. Hey i reckon in a couple years time the WCE will be back up there, Masten, S Selwood, Ebert, McKinley, Kennedy... it looks promising.
Dirk from Hobart (Bombers supporter), 6 May 2008 12:29hide comment
And it won't become any less amazing that they can't play to save themselves without the presence of a couple of players. The commentators can say whatever they want when it's an interesting talking point.

Fifteenth. Richmond was the wooden spooner - no matter how much you want to believe otherwise. But, I agree with you otherwise. West Coast has done nothing at all to prove us wrong.

Greg i believe the topic of this thread is 'I wish Victorian Commentators stop talking about the "demise of the Eagles"' not "Gee Wizz if only we still Had Juddy" or "Carlton would have the wooden sppon stuck firmly up their ass if we still had Juddy" or "carlton supporters, type here in this thread to act like a dickhead and go out of you way to piss off eagles supporters as it seams that is what you live for" Keep the typing to the topic, there a dozen other threads you could dribble in about the Carlton win.

I respect the fact for the first time in a LONG time the blues supporters actually have something to celebrate. Congratulations on beating an injury-stricken west coast for the first time since 2001 when they're having a bad year. Hate to say it but at present, most of the teams in the AFL could probably beat us in this rough patch. You won because you wanted it more, were more focused and worked better as a team. And fair enough. One thing you need to learn Greg is that you can be both a sore loser and a sore winner. Careful whose feet you step on when you're online though, as people are not always whom they seem. You are really talking out your bum if you think we don't have the talent to be a formidible force again. Because we do. Nomatter how much you bag us (which is REALLY ironic coming from a blues supporter) won't change the facts. We may pickup when our list is fighting fit again, but i can't see a grand final for us this year at the moment. But do you think I'm going to lose any sleep over it? NO. As Judd said "It's just a game" you win some and lose some. No team can keep up constant finals series forever.

You make good points! It is such a shame we lost, but I bet there were a few worried Blues Poo's suppoters a few times in the second half !! On to next week, our young guys will only get stronger, they just lack experience, and that will come with time.

I really think that without Judd and Cousins we've only got Kerr and Priddis as our main midfielders. Now that Josh Kennedy, Mckinley and Ebert have shown what they can do, we just need to work them all together. Lynchy seems to work better as a midfielder getting the ball up forward.. he's much too patchy on goals, mckinley is so much better this season. Iguess woosha has some things to think about. I don't think we're going to keep losing but it will be interesting to see what happens if and when we do turn around. This year may be a "down" year for us but as soon as woosha figures out how to work the new blokes we'll get back up there.

What have Judd and Cousins got to do with the Eagles???? NOTHING... We traded Kennedy for Judd...Kennedy was your top goal scorer(2) whats the problem...without Kennedy it would have been interesting....as Carlton produced the top goal scorers on both teams..I think it's time we start working on getting Kennedy back to where he wants to play...CARLTON...As a club we should reward his sacrifice and, work on getting him back in end of season trades...the Eagles will get enough draft picks this tear anyway....
Linda from Perth (Eagles supporter), 5 May 2008 15:03hide comment
You are spot on. I agree that Lynch at goal is just too wishy washy (sometimes cringe worthy!!), he could definately be better used as a midfielder, and the young guns - Mckinley, Kennedy etc will, I think, get better and better, they just lack experience. This year should be viewed as a regrouping and recalculating period.

Why are the Eagles still lamenting Judd's move to Victoria....he not only went to Carlton, he became their Captain, came back to Subiaco and lead Carlton to a crushing victory against the Eagles....get over it..he is Carlton property and will never be back except on a plane with 21 other champions...

hang on a minute greg.... you mean to say that because West Coast are having a rough patch that instantly means that they are not "AFL Standard" anymore? Really, you do know how to showboat dont you.... just because Carlton have won 3 games (and yes against the Pies, as you will no doubt rub in because thats all you ever seem to do) do you honestly think that gives you the right and authority to dictate the words "Lost" & "pathetic", boy you got alot of hide, what honestly do you think makes Carlton so great and mighty at the moment? Judd, yeah righto you have a captain that can finally make a "losing", "pathetic" team win again (I think you should be crediting that to the talent and skill, yes skill of West Coast), Fevola, so he can kick goals...how long do you think an ignoramus like that will last? Long lasting history? gee you only talk bout that when the other two cant back you up at the times when you lose. You can honestly say that the Carlton is up to "AFL Standard", you have a long ways to go yet, that also provides that everyone at Carlton can stay injury free and out of trouble ..... As for parading around on all the forums like king dingaling whos word is like honey on the tongue, I think itll be the only time ever the word "Rich" will apply to you

Jessica don't even comment on Carlton. I am a realistic Blues fan yes we beat Collingwood, Melbourne and West Coast all these teams are struggling to win games this year. By the way I worked at the Collingwood and Essendon game and the Pies were awsome but they were only playing Essendon who are really struggling at the moment. I don't hate the Pies they have some fantastic players. I will start to get cocky when we knock off in form teams like Geelong, Bull Dogs ect. That probably won't happen this year. Jessica have a look at your side less then a goal of playing off in a grand final to a complete disgrace this year. This is big brother "Its time to go Mick MALTHOUSE." Also have a look at Carltons injury list we have suffered our fair share of injuries this year. I also heard a strong rumour JUDD was going to Collingwood last year until he met some of their feral supports I hope you didn't meet him as you may have cost the pies a flag. Nick Stevens would have been at your club as well but Port refused to trade with the Pies. Then you get rid of a gutsy loyal player in Heath Scotland to the Blues for no return. All I can say Jessica. Go Blues, Go Blues, Go Blues, Go Blues, Go Blues. You get the picture.

Paul, get your facts straight first.... Nick Stevens ALWYAS wanted to got to Carlton in the first place, Heath Scotland was released from the Pies due to his drug problem (so i dont think you guys should be riding the eagles over drug issues when your own players have their drug issues )....we didn't get Judd because the eagles wont trade with collingwood and we weren't going to trade any of our young players.... as for injuries what injuries, the team that played the eagles is the best that you have and thats it. as for Malthouse, haven't the rumor? who's Gary Pert's best mate?

yeah i did when he was playing for Port. he bought a house with a year to go on his Port contract back in Melbourne and requested to be traded to Collingwood. Port wanted Didak but Collingwood wouldnt budge so he went to Carlton. Im sure now he is happy there and would state that he had no issues going there but at the time before the trade he def wanted to go to Collingwood.

You obviously have wiped out any recollection of the second quarter??? That is my definition of "pathetic" If thats what we can do...(seeing that we are not really that good in your opinion) What is every one else going to do to you...even the Dockers beat you... By the way...you obviously didnt watch the game... Judd only had 24 disposals... Stevens(28), Scotland(32), and Carrazzo(42..thats 42!!!) all had more of the ball than Judd........so claiming Judd as the only reason we smashed the Wiggles has little credability...dont you think?? dont forget we traded Kennedy for Judd and he was your highest goal scorer on the night...no wonder he was in tears when he found out he HAD to go and play for the Wiggles..who wouldn't? I thought it was very ironic that they were giving out inflatables of GLASS before the match...FULL OF HOT AIR...very symbolic... WE ARE THE NAVY BLUES Go FEV Go BLUES Together We Rise!

I reckon it was the idiot Dennis Commetti who is from WA that kept speaking all the crap about Demise of the Eagles. I been on a few of your WA newspaper sites and they have been certainly less than friendly as well. The commentators said they had 16 out of their 22 that played in their last premiership playing last Friday night so they shouldn't be playing as bad as they are. The Eagles will bounce back no worries about that. With the competition rewarding teams on poor performance by number 1 draft picks quality sides like the Eagles can't stay at the top for ever. Also your off field players management could have been better in handling poor and suspect behaviour before it presented in the nightmare of last year and the demise of a champion footballer. As for Chris JUDD the blues are so lucky to get him he makes us into a 6 goal better side each week. Takes the pressure off our younger blokes. He seems a down to earth person and is a great captain. No doubt if he was still at the Eagles we wouldn't have won last week. But as Ben Cousins Tatt says "Such is Life."

I 100% agree. It frustrates me when commentators have to throw in their little opinion. Just tell us what is happening on the field, not what your biases are! Carlton have been on the raw end of it for years, most commentators have affiliations with either hawthorn, collingwood, essendon or richmond - and they find it impossible not to make comments in their own teams favor. It is frustrating! By the way I have heard West Oz commentators and many do have the same problem.
