But, I'd wager, Pies and Dons during the day at the MCG, two interstate and one night game at the Dome. So, nothing much will be different. I'd like to point out how disappointed I was that the Last Post wasn't played at the other games in Melbourne during the weekend. I know they used to do the Last Post, minute's silence and national anthem at every game, with the full ceremony at Coll vs Ess - and since they market it as Anzac Round, the AFL owes it to fans to at least give us the reduce ceremony at other games.

There is nothing worse then hearing the last post when it isnt Anzac Day. I think its a disgrace and its just a pure marketing gone too far by the AFL. The Last Post should only be held on Anzac Day.

My club deserves to stand arm-in-arm on a football field and honour our fallen troops just as much as your club, and how dare you suggest otherwise.

Did Carlton play on Anzac Day? no they didnt so there shouldnt be a last post. Its just a marketing ploy which sickens me. I met a few people that are Anzacs and they dont like it when they play it when its not Anzac Day.

You don't own the Last Post. You own Anzac Day, and you earned that right. But you don't own the bloody Last Post.

Agree to disagree. But not doing it left me feeling empty, and you must at least sympathise with that.

Look, I struggle to understand how it sickens you and how it is a disgrace (both quotes) that an additional 30,000×7 people get to pay their respects to the Anzacs, albeit belatedly, through football. Grow up and let non-Collingwood/Essendon people have a bugler.

its pretty simple it sickens him because you suggested that it should be played at evey game during in the anzac round but not every team plays on anzac day derrrrrrrrr so for the last post to be played at a game that isn´t on anzac day is offensive understand

Are you suggesting that the date is more important than the message? That it is meaningless to honour our soldiers if it doesn't happen to be the box on the calendar with a 25 in the corner? That's a pathetic notion. Celebrations of Christmas and Easter both bleed into the weeks around them. Many "Australia Day" themed events occur in the days before and after. Anzac Day occurs on the anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli, but the meaning of the day transcends that simple disaster of warfare. It is the meaning of the day that is important, not the actual date itself, and if you cannot grasp this concept, then you have an incredibly simple view on the world.

can we do a Xmas round next week and have Santa toss the coin since its the message that counts and not the date. The round will embrace giving and kindness and since its the message that counts it wont matter that Xmas is 7 months away. I maye be clutching at straws but i think i make my point, the last post is meant for Anzac Day, nothing more.

Obviously I can't speak for him, but perhaps he was trying to say (albeit probably a bit too agressively) that he thinks it would cheapen it if it were played ad nauseum. Honestly, the game doesn't really have much to do with Anzac day, that the game is on the day always seemed like a bit of a marketing ploy/hype. If it were up to me I'd much rather no teams played on the day at all as a sign of respect, I can only imagine the flames I could get for saying this, but ultimately footy is just a game, and is far less important than honouring our fallen. Regarding your comments about Easter and Christmas, both holidays have become incredibly secular and commercial, it would be a sad and sorry sight to see Anzac day watered down to the same level.

That is absolutely spot on Tarrant. I think alot of Bombers and Pies fans think that they own the day and that their game is THE only important game in the Draw that their precious anzac day match is played. Dont get me wrong I'm glad it's on it's way to becoming tradition, but this year was an absolute blow out, I was much more impressed with the Gell, Freo match. And I agree entirely that the last post should be played at every match during Anzac round. How can this be offensive, how long do we have to endure Christmas carols in the weeks leading up to christmas, it seems everywhere you go they are on.

u no that talking up crowds of 100,000 because its anzac day is also a marketing ploy?. so is playing footy on the day were we honor those who have fallen in war. Also i dont see how playing the last post at say a carlton brisbane game is going to attract a bigger crowd... just because the last post is being played. but i agree with u on the last post should onli be played on ANZAC Day.

i have no issue with the game being played on Anzac Day ONLY because Essendon and Collingwood got together and wanted to pay their respects by playing a game on the day and pay tribute to those that have fallen. If the AFL came up with the idea and scheduled that game i would not be happy about it cause then i know its purely marketing.

yeah, but the afl new that by letting 2 teams paly on ANZAC day they would attract huge crowds. now u hear everywhere in the media about anzac day and how big the game is. its marketing. playing a game on a major day, and then promoting that game is marketing, no matter wat way u look at it.

at least everyone will shut up about it for a year. its pathetic people complain that other teams bar collingwood and essendon should have it during the day. no one else wanted it and now its become one of the biggest games they all want a piece of it. stiff ****.
Dirk from Hobart (Bombers supporter), 29 Apr 2008 13:05hide comment
Fair enough too, there's no reason why Anzac day should be reserved for two teams.
