Gehrig and Rocca
Saturday: Matthew Scarlett beat Gehrig in defense, then ran off him to create general havoc up the field.
Sunday: Repeat story, Waite and Rocca.

These strong-bodied, slow full-forwards are perhaps being revealed as a serious double-edged sword in a team's arsenal. When those guys are on fire, they can score seven or more goals quite easily, since so many of their shots will be from very close. But when they get beaten, they contribute nothing in the other direction, so it's almost as if the team plays with seventeen men while the Scarlett types run rampant. It can be a dangerous proposition.

gehrig:
2003: 55 (21 games)
2004: 103(23 games)
2005: 78(22games)
2006: 71(22 games)
2007: 59(20 games)
total over the last 5 years: 366 goals
Fev
2003: 63( 22 games)
2004: 66 (20 games)
2005: 49(19 gammes)
2006: 84(21 games)
2007: 59 (19 games)
total over the last 5 years: 321 goals.

while the taller, more.... heavy, forwards may not be able to put as much pressure on the defenders inside attackin 50 they are still as good, if not better, then the more athletic ones.

its not so much dangerous if the other forwards n the midfielders in the area do the job n put pressure on there player.

having an opposing forward line with a gehrig or a rocca in it and leaving them for 5-10 seconsd with out being manned up on is probably more dangerous then letting there man run off them. all it takes is 1 miss kick and a quick turn over and itll have the exact opposite affect. i would much rather have a rocca or gehrig in my team then a small boddied forward who would easily be beaten by a scarlett... basset... leo barry.

The problem with gehrig is that ross lyon has the forward line way to crowded. imo reiwoldt needs to play on a wing, or even center half back like waite does and have gehrig at full forward and kozi at CHF.

also i dont think there is anything rong with a full forward kicking goals close to the sticks... especially if hes leading outta the square like a full forward is spose to.

the problem with the bigger fowards is that they cant get the ball themselves and are therefor a waste when the balls loose and not in there hands.

You sayd that if you leave a larger foward open got 10 seconds you can get punished. the other day Waite was running off rocca all day long. he ended the game with the most touched out of any carlton player. and yet rocca still did nothing because he didnt get into any momentum early so he couldnt start up, so to speak.

Latly the better fowards have been the athletic ones. Brown, Pavlich, Franklin, Lloyd, Reiwolt and Fevola are the top handful of key position fowards in the league.

When you looked at Gehrig and Fevola over the last five years there goals per game hasnt been very different. Gehrig was 3.39 and Fev was 3.18. If you take into account this year so far the numbers are Gehrig 3.36 Fevola 3.24. Not alot of difference if you look at it.

Also i feel that moving Reiwoldt to a wing is a bad move. Hes a great lead up CHF. put gehrig in the square and ruck Kozi becuase he has the ability to get posetions around the ground like cox does were reiwoldt can only lead up and down rather than run the ground.

reiwoldt started at stkilda on the wing and off CHB. he won the NAB rising star that same year. reiwoldts a great leading forward but we recruited charlie gardiner for that. im not saying gardnier is better at this, he is no were near as good, but reiwoldt will still kick 3-4 goals a game on a wing going with the flight of the footy. also reiwoldt would be extremly hard to man up on as a wingman, just look how much impact richo had on the freo game. doing this will also free up the forward line which has been stkildas problem since ross lyon has become coach. grant thomas got away with reiwoldt, gehrig, kozi and hammill all in the same forward line making an impact because he still had a fairly free forward 50.

if ross lyon was smart, he would have milne hovering around gehrig at all times because if gehrgi doesnt mark it the balls gone. with milne there atleast there is the possiblilty, if hes front n centre like a crumer is supposed to be, that we can still salvage a score.

ross lyon does not no how to coach an attacking team. there is no way stkilda will be able to keep the better teams under 100 points and the way lyons got the midfield and forward line structured there is no way stkilda will be able to kick 100 points. they need to go back to a free flowing style.

Well said there Matt. Personally I like the idea of a bunch of players capable of kicking 1 or 2 goals per game. Look at Geelong last year they sometimes had over 12 indiv. goal kickers, that in my opinion makes you a more powerful side. Those Big guys are awesome, when they are on but on a bad day they can kick only 1 or no goals at all, and USUALLY when those guys are off their side suffers for it.
