Kicking Stats
My friends and I have been debating whether the kick outs after a point has been scored count towards that players statistics.
Many years ago I had the same debate with my father over the number of stats Nathan Buckley was racking up (God knows why I was watching a Collingwood game, but there you have it!) I thought they did count, but my dad did not. For the record, neither of us agreed that they should.
Eventually, I actually sat and counted Buckley's kicks during a quarter of footy and matched them to the official stats that were being shown on TV. At the time, they matched. ie the kickouts were counted.
After Saturday's Showdown I noticed that Peter Burgoyne was doing a large number of the kick outs for Port and therefore wondered if this contributed to his tally of 41. Nobody else agreed that the kick outs were counted, but I wasn't so sure.
Can anyone confirm or deny this please?

i thoguht that kick ins didnt count because it was just counted as a restart of play and the player didnt acctually earn the kick. but then if he plays on or is called to be play on it counts as a kick... i dunno, thats just wat i think it is.

I was always under the impression that kick-ins weren't counted as part of a players individual stats unless he kicks it to himself and plays on.
Toni, are you telling me that you're ashamed to admit watching a football match that doesn't involve your team?? Either you like football or you don't. If you're saying smething about the style of football being played, then why would you support Adelaide, the kings of chip chip chipping around the backline over the last couple of years?

spot on, kick ins dont count unless u do a joel bowden and chip it to yourself and then kick.
Adelaide cost me a lot of money last week with that style of play.

You mean they cost you money by winning??? Hardly their fault wouldn't you say?

no i had them at over 6.5pts, you won by 6 pts. You had the ball near the 50m then went backwards all the way to your 50m. wankers.
Would have won $280 and could have done with that for Anzac Day.
Good luck with the Hawks, i think ur boys may pull up a bit rough after a massive game

Yep, you were definitely right about that one. Didn't play very well at all.

So, what about kicking in after it's out on the full? Counted or not?

My understanding is the same as Mark's.

I'm surprised more stats aren't kept about kick-ins. I would like to see a breakdown of a team's kick-in potency, such as break the field into four sections and record how far teams advance the ball before losing possession, plus scores from kick-ins.

Kick-in tactics are interesting to watch, and teams are really bad at leaving opponents free 60-70m out on the flanks, giving them open space to run into.

kick ins do not count as stats, if they were counting Buckleys kick ins as stats then they made a massive mistake.
Yes the kick in is very important these days but it has never and shouldnt be counted as a stat towards the player.

Not being a AFL statistician I can't say that they were counted or not. But I believe that they SHOULD be counted!

Why do you think they shouldn't be counted? Do you also think that ;free kicks' shouldn't be counted???

Kick ins are very important kicks - all AFL clubs have set kick-in strategies for certain situations and it's a great advantage if the player who does the kick=ins have the skills to help execute the team's game plan, so they definately should be counted.
