Over rated, under rated and well over paid!
This is a topic which I expect will start some arguements but its getting down to the bare facts!
These are my top overrated players

1) Chris Tarrant:- I am not sure how much the Dockers are paying him salary wise but whatever it is, its pathetic! no other player has been shown this much leniency with a second rate player! For a player marked by a club who expects him to be a key forward and prospect to them winning games, he has 13 disposals from 2 games averaging 6.5 a game which is radiculous for anyone and has kicked 1 behind as a forward, as a starting forward they are the worst stats for any player in the AFL this year!

2) Brendan Fevola, the last 2 weeks he has aquired 22 possesions and 4 goals as full forward and swapped as Centre half forward. Should not have played the first round out of respect for embarrasing the CFL. His averaging 11 possesions and 2 goals a game! He has also givin away 5 free kicks and recieved 5, if the umpiring was better he'd have 2 free's!

3) Justin Koschitzke:- Not a day goes by that I dont hear footy talk back talking up his talent! Well where is it, this is as bad as when Jobe Watson first started out but Justin has been around for a while now! 14 possesions and 2 goals 4 behinds in 2 games, thats not as bad but almost as bad as Tarrant. If he doesnt pick up his game this week, drop him and bring in Armitage!

4) Quentin Lynch:- This guy although can pick up a few possesions, is supposed to be a key goal kicking forward, but as shown like on so many occasions is a long kick but doesnt boot enough, to be a key possesion winning forward, you should look at someone like Jason Porplyzia of Adelaide or Stevie Milne of St Kilda, every team has them. Lynch isnt a big enough ball winner for that position. He has had 32 disposals in 2 matches ave- 16 a game and 2 goals so far for the season, very over rated!

5) Setanta O'Halpin:- The young Carlton forward has been thrust down the back line, after such a good preseason, he has had a terrible start to the season, he got one goal in round one and was thrust into the backline in Rnd 2, where he had basically no impact, if you have a player who is supposed to be a forward, but he's not kicking goals, dont do what Pagan did to Fevola and put him down back unless he's got the goods to go up field with! He got slaughtered, 16 possesions in 2 weeks, as a back man, to have had an impact you need to have had at least 15 possesions a game to really have an impact. Plus just one goal from a 2nd rate forward yuk!

My next topic will be my top 5 Underated players

Daniel from Adelaide (Magpies supporter), 18 Apr 2008 11:32 hide comment
So Dal Santo would be gone and Kosi?
Cloke won our best and fairest last season so im pretty sure u would need to have more then 3 decent games to get that.
Mark from Melbourne (Bulldogs supporter), 7 Apr 2008 19:39 hide comment
Over-rated
Agree with Kosi ( only plays well against Doggies and even then its only for a half) ,

Dal Santo ( he is a good footballer but not the elite champ many seem to think he is)

Aaron Sandilands - there is more to ruckwork than being really tall - ask Peter Street

Dale Thomas/Travis Cloke/Leon Davis - partly to annoy Collingwood supporters and partly because the footy world gets excited about every mark or goal they take/kick just because they are constantly on TV and the supporters scream about them a lot. Let them succeed for more than a year before we glorify them

Most Underrated
Joel Corey
Dale Morris ( physically shouldn't be able to compete with Riewoldt but does)
Andrew Embley ( not playing great at the moment but lost amongst all the Cousins/Judd/Kerr hysteria is a tall wingman that I would love in our side in form and fit)
Brett Burton
(don't think we realise how good the guy can be)
Corey Jones

haha well done on annoying Collingwood fans, Cloke's pretty much proven himself as a good player being a Copeland trophy winner and all, and i don't really remember anyone rating him extremely highly. I agree with the bird man being underrated, can take a good leap

Matt from Melbourne (Saints supporter), 16 Apr 2008 18:59 hide comment
kozi won the nab rising star award.
trophies mean jack **** if players dont follow up.
i dont really think burton is that under rated i mean commentators are always going on about him in the forward line.
Matt from Melbourne (Saints supporter), 7 Apr 2008 20:20 hide comment
i dont think burton is underated. most ppl rate him. its just that he is inconsistant.
as for dal santo... not many ppl get as many brownlow votes as he does being over rated. if u say dal santos over rated ur calling players like pendlebury, selwood and luke powerand others of that sort over rated also.

i reackon dale thomas was over rated... but i gotta admit he isnt playing to bad anymore. still not as good as collingwood fans say he is though

Mark from Melbourne (Bulldogs supporter), 7 Apr 2008 22:19 hide comment
Hey you're a saints fan so you're going to support Dal Santo just like I'd support Rob Murphy, Adam Cooney etc. I think he IS a good player but he is not a GREAT player as many rate him - therefore OVERrated. And brownlow votes( he didn't win ) don't mean greatness- it means a good year of footy in a certain number of games as decided by a certain group of umpires. BTW Pendlebury and Selwood haven't played enough to be counted ( I know - Cloke hasn't played much either but is getting hyped!) and Power has played in 3 premierships and I've copied some facts about him - "Power's value to the Lions often goes largely unnoticed at times as he is very unlucky considering he is yet to win his club's B&F award. He has placed in the top four in each of the past five seasons finishing runner-up three times. He has had 166 score assists in the past five H&A seasons - the most in the AFL and his 429 inside 50s in that time ranks eighth. He booted just nine goals last season - his fewest since his debut season, but his 40 score assists during the H&A season ranked third in the AFL." - hardly overrated stats

and im sure if u looked up dal santo u would see he has similarly finished in the same postions in the club best n fairest like luke power. dal santo is good. he finds space no matter how congested the area is which is a skill not many players have. he is decivingly quick and has a great kick. i can see y u call kozi over rated but dal santo isnt. id say he is more of an under achiever then over rated. he can play a lot better then he does. over rated means the talent isnt there... the talent is there with dal santo, he just hasnt produced it yet this seaosn.

Mark from Melbourne (Bulldogs supporter), 7 Apr 2008 22:57 hide comment
Actually Nick's never been in top 3 in Saints B and F ....but anyway one man's over rated in another man's underachiever. It's all in the personal definition. Thanks for the verbal competition

Daniel from Adelaide (Magpies supporter), 8 Apr 2008 8:06 hide comment
I agree Mark, Luke Power is a excellent player and doesnt get enough recognition. Dal Santo is a good player but hasnt taken the next step.
Cloke is a very good player who is on the border of becoming a great player, this wil only happen once his goalkicking improves. He has developed into one of the best CHF's in the comp since Tazza left. We had to get 1 good Cloke out of 3 didnt we?
Thomas will be a great player, i think he gets hyped up so much cause of his flair and stuff, i think when he brings what he did against the Tigers on a consistent basis he will become a gun. Pendlebury is a freak and everyone goes on about Selwood who just beat him in the rising star but Pendlebury actually had better statistics then Selwood in disposals, hard ball gets, goals etc. Could have won the award if he didnt do his foot and miss a large chuck of the season.
Steve from Melbourne (Blues supporter), 14 Apr 2008 15:55 hide comment
you may want to rethink your thoughts on Fev after his last few games. He is a match winner who can tear a game apart. 15 goals in 2 weeks... its great when he is off the drink!
Alli (Dockers supporter), 8 Apr 2008 22:58 hide comment
Being a Dockers' Supporter I agree Tarrant is over rated! I am sure Harvey will sort him out tho! Hopefully out the door!
Andrew from Suzhou (Lions supporter), 8 Apr 2008 13:16 hide comment
I think 'overrated' is an overrated word
Josh from Carrum Downs (Bombers supporter), 7 Apr 2008 20:29 hide comment
there's two full teams that are over rated, with a couple of under rated players in them....

FREMANTLE - when ever they get brought up, their players are talked about like they are superstars, which other then one finals appearance, they are still yet to prove that they are any good. Poor drafting, coaching, etc has also added to this. But there are a couple of under rated players for them, i ll let you guys throw up afew names of who you think they may be...

St Kilda- they are also over rated, almost every year since 2001, they have been tipped in the top 4, and some have even said they would win the flag. Considering they have only played in one grand final in recent history and lost that convincingly, you could also say they are finals chokers... But, as with freo, saints do have some under rated players, which I ll let you guys throw up afew names with also...

Matt from Melbourne (Saints supporter), 7 Apr 2008 17:47 hide comment
i reackon pevrill n stanton are very over rated for essendon. stanton has barley touched the footy since gettin the number 5.

and tarrent, yeah i think hille mite be a bit over rated acctually... after watchin the bombers carlton game.

1 reply hide reply
Tarrant from Melbourne (Blues supporter), 7 Apr 2008 19:33 hide comment
yeah, stanton hasn't impressed since getting the 5. Wouldn't write him off yet, though.
Damian from Brisbane (Bombers supporter), 7 Apr 2008 13:06 hide comment
overrated: st kilda
Matt from Melbourne (Saints supporter), 4 Apr 2008 17:00 hide comment
my under rateds - brown(hawks), hille(essendon. ppl rate him but he is there midfield), bock (crows), hudgton (saints), foley (tigers. ive seen him paly the saints two or three times n he is just one of the best young clearence getters ive seen) scott thompson(crows), stenglien(eagles)

over rated: fev, rhyce shaw, pearce(hes got skills but doesnt use them enough), farmer(freak but so inconsistant), raph clarke(ppl dont really rate him but how the fk does he get a game?!?!)

there are more but yeah... im sure others will have brought them up already.

I actually think Hille is overrated.
Austin (Bombers supporter), 5 Apr 2008 14:35 hide comment
I would hesitate to say that O'Halpin and Fevola are over-rated.. Fevola is in the rank of 'should be a superstar but isn't'.. And O'Halpin is good when he's playing in his preferred position..

I would add Milne and Gherig to the over-rated list, and - if you're going on the basis of 2 games, how come you didn't put Judd's 2 performances down for Carlton as over-rated?

2 replies hide replies
Tarrant from Melbourne (Blues supporter), 5 Apr 2008 15:59 hide comment
That's quite accurate. O'hAilpin, who has actually been dropped for the Bombers game, is essentially the first alternate for a lot of positions. I can reliably say that, had Kreuzer not been injured for the first two weeks, Setanta would not have played. While he can play tall forward, tall defender, or back-up ruckman, he's not good enough yet at any to win a place - Jamison and Bower, in particular, put the squeeze on places in the backline.

Until last year, I would have placed Leon Davis atop the overrated list. It took him years to develop an iota of a defensive side to his game. Ironically, now that he's a better player for it, people no longer rate him as highly due to the airtime demanded by the Daveys, three-game veteran Cyril Rioli, etc. Can you go from overrated to underrated?

1 reply hide reply
Daniel from Adelaide (Magpies supporter), 6 Apr 2008 9:54 hide comment
For sure Tarrant, Leon Davis has gone from a inconsistent player who will get involved for 5 mins a game into a very good midfielder for us. He led the team last season in tackles and has worked on his fitness to play in the midfield and he has added another dimension to it. I like the move of Jared Brennan into the midfield for Brisbane. He has too much ability to waste it floating around in the forward line not getting his hands on it. I think he won the game against us for Brisbane.

Kreuzer looked great for u boys last night, i think the most underated bloke for your mob is Thornton or Fisher. Thornton is a very good defender in my mind and if he were in a top 8 side he would be more recognised

Austin (Bombers supporter), 5 Apr 2008 22:50 hide comment
On the back of Fevola's 8 goal match against Essendon I don't think you can argue he's over-rated.. He may well be inconsistent, but when he's switched on and giving 100% he can be a definate game-winner.
Michael from Melbourne (Eagles supporter), 4 Apr 2008 10:34 hide comment
Here are some underrated players in my opinion:

Beau Waters - Toughest guy in the league maybe?
Campell Brown - Tough undersized defender
Ryan O'Keefe- Everytime you watch him play he works hard and gts heaps of goal assists
Jed Adcock - Starting to get a name, greatball user who is tough and gets los of it
Brad Fisher - Great contested mark
Dane Swan - Clearence king and gets heaps of it
Joel Corey - Tackle machine who does erything well

Overrated

Chad Fletcher - Ball butcher
Aaron Davey - Should be a superstar... but isn't
Brett Deledio - No.1 pick... What's he doing these days?
Ash Hansen - Cannot get on the park - so many injuries he now moves like a dinosaur

2 replies hide replies
Andrew from Suzhou (Lions supporter), 4 Apr 2008 12:22 hide comment
I agree with most of those as underrated... But I do think Aaron Davey is a star, I don't think he has any weaknesses - he's just as good defenceively as he is in attack
1 reply hide reply
Michael from Melbourne (Eagles supporter), 5 Apr 2008 12:07 hide comment
Was talking to a mate the other day (melb supporter). I asked him why Davey is not a star - why is he an inconsistent forward pocket and not elite midfielder. He pointed out that Davey does not have the strength of a lot of players to use his body and get his own ball... I thought it was a good point.
Daniel from Adelaide (Magpies supporter), 4 Apr 2008 14:11 hide comment
cant argue with ur underated players, i think u can throw in Lockyer and Tyson Edwards as well.
Tarrant from Melbourne (Blues supporter), 4 Apr 2008 12:23 hide comment
I was going to say Justin Westhoff also. For all of the hype, he got steadily worse as the year went on and he started to get the attention of defenders. I think he needs some SANFL time to re-develop.
1 reply hide reply
Daniel from Adelaide (Magpies supporter), 4 Apr 2008 14:13 hide comment
Justin Westhoff isnt that good and im shocked his brother got picked up as well. They have never done anything at SANFL level to even suggest they were going to the get drafted. I think he had his period where he was a difficult matchup cause of his build but now teams will have his measure.
I expect him to dissapear off the radar in the next couple seasons.
Daniel from Adelaide (Magpies supporter), 4 Apr 2008 10:07 hide comment
I think ur harsh on Kosi, the man has had a ton of injuries and the head clash has affected his ability, there is no doubt about that. Lynch isnt rated i dont think, he isnt a star but he isnt avg either. How can u say O'Halpin is overated lol, he is a project player and i think he at least gives 100% and tries to pump up his fellow players. I think he has been pretty decent. for the blues.
I think the most underated players are Tyson Edwards, Tarkyn Lockyer, Matthew Boyd and Heath Scotland.
