What do you all think about TUNNELING? (The Saints are comlplaining about it)
You're not allowed to put your hands into a players back or chop there arms away in a marking contest. If your not tall, like Rewalt of St Kilda, then how do you stop someone from taking a mark?

I think you are right there because if you look back 2 years ago ( The Swans V.S The Saints) Reiwoldt was jumping early for his marks then?
Paul from Geelong (Blues supporter), 6 Apr 2008 9:28 hide comment
Reiwoldt jumps for the ball too early and then falls to the ground in attempt to milk a free kick. The Saints are always complaining over nothing.
Austin (Bombers supporter), 5 Apr 2008 23:58 hide comment
Whenever any AFL player leaps off the ground he has no way of knowing what sort of contact he may recieve whilst in mid-air. There has always been mid-air collisions in marking contests and whenever you make a leap you can't ever be sure of a safe landing. The only way to get rid of tunnelling (and the risks involved), then, is to make it illegal for players to jump to win a contested ball..
Caitlin from Melbourne (Swans supporter), 3 Apr 2008 20:08 hide comment
Ugh.
Football is a game of attacking and defending.
Riewoldt was beaten, that's all. Bolton fulfilled his job as a defender and to me, that's to be commended.

Call it bias if you will, but anyone who knows me will say I'm the first to admit if I reckon anyone's playing dirty. I have a great amount of respect for the game, it's rules and those who play it...and I don't think there's any weight to this "tunnelling" claim.

take another look at the contests.
in one of them. boltons eyes are on riewoldts hips.... next thing u no reiwoldts legs are taken from under him.
its stupid to think its not dangerous.
a players legs taken out from under him in full flight in the air. at that speed do u no how much chance u ahve got to react and get a arm up or to try n get balance back. if a player lands on his neck there goes his afl career.
and now that tunneling is out, if the afl doint do somethin about it and a palyer does get a serious injury like a broken neck.. the afl will be sued.,

The entire game is dangerous and physically demanding.
I never said it wouldn't be dangerous...I just said there was nothing in the claims

Listen to these winging whining Vics, if one of their players get hurt in a game of football, man they find a way to make new rules to suit themselves and make them look like the good guys! Whereas they are the dum****s who are constantly making more and more rules so our game is just a juggling act at the circus. I say get a life you friggen Vic pissants, and leave our great game alone. If use wanna go and change a game to suit youselves, go and follow the A League soccer! I have no respect whatsoever for Victorian sport supporters who constantly wanna make new rules, and whinge and bitch when their teams lose! If Adelaide lose this weekend you wont hear me crying! When we lose, we take it under our stride and move on, look forward to next week. You know if these things happened to our players, we wouldnt care, we would just sit back and say, " Well he just didnt have a good game, better luck next week"! Us interstate supporters, dont try and make new rules to suit our style of game, use are jiust upset that use didnt come up with the idea before Sydney did, good on you Swans keep it up and go Roosey you rule!!! As for the Saints, GO DOGS

One guy kicks 7 in a game and you start to talk about the Coleman medal, what would you know about football?

Check out the Goose thread dedicated to ya, haha.

Even if these things did happen to my team and we complained no-one would listen the only reason anyone listens now is because it Victoria, everyone has to listen to Victoria, They'll turn our game into a game of Handball

I got to say that from what I saw of the match, Riewoldt seemed to have an incredibly bad sense of where the balls he was trying to mark were.. He was in the air above Bolton and the ball was metres above him or off to the right or the left.. No way he could've marked them anyway!

I think a bigger issue should be the dirty dirty tactics Paul Chapman constantly uses and gets away with...

whether or not reiwoldt misjudges the footy a player still cant take anothers ones legs out from under him.
and if he did wouldnt that be worse still?
Joel (Eagles supporter), 2 Apr 2008 2:33 hide comment
Might be time for defenders to start playing 5+ metres in front and backing their ability. It seems to be an art that's gone out of the modern game due to the pace the ball is delivered into the forward line.

Most forwards are pretty crude with their marking attempts from behind (check out Robbo on the w-end) so as long as the umpires are CONSISTENT and pay the kicks no matter who is doing the pushing, we might see this come back into the game shortly.

There is not much in it for defenders at the moment. No Brownlow votes to top if off!

Matt from Melbourne (Saints supporter), 1 Apr 2008 18:11 hide comment
i was watchin the tunnelin incidents again and on a couple of occasions bolton didnt even try to contest for the ball, reiwoldt had jumped and bolton realised he had no chance of stoppin him so he took his legs out from under him. it mite sound like im whinging coz im a saints supporter but it is dirty tactics. i would be saying the same if it were brown, franklin or any other player gettin his legs takin out from under him.... even sultana ohelphim.
Stephen from Blacktown, 31 Mar 2008 13:24 hide comment
Well let's have a look at how other Defenders try and stop Rewalt. With these new rules it is going to be hard to unless you can out mark him maybe?

Watch Jarrad Waite. He's had the better of Riewoldt in each of their battles.

I wish I didn't have to listen to Bruce McAvaney and David Schwartz to watch it; it otherwise looks like being a cracking game.

Brucey and Schwarz are woeful but you forgot to throw in Timmy he would have to be the worst of all time! The sooner Channel 9 gets the rights back the better

Ya flick the volume down, put on some good music crack open a tinny, Shut em out of the picture all together. I'll be there with some St Kilda supporter/mates, and a couple of neutrals (1 bomber and 1 Pies). Our last game against the Saints was a draw so it's time to redeem ourselves, I don't think I could cope with another draw.

My bet is you guys'll come to the party against the Bombers this week.

I think that the swans could have a case to answer it myself as i watched the game and not once did they try spoil rewalt. Taking a players legs out is just like tripping to me
Adrian from Melbourne (Blues supporter), 29 Mar 2008 12:21 hide comment
I think everyone’s over exaggerating. It looks to me that Bolton didn’t do it one purpose he just was reading the lead better and when he noticed that the ball was gonna go over Riewoldt’s head he push back to gather the crumbs.

Also this wouldn’t be an issue if defenders would be able to use there hands to push the forward under the ball and not just their bodies. Also let them chop the arms cos that’s how the best defenders got their names as good defenders. Tunneling’s not the issue the issue is the stupid rules.

u obviouslt wernt at the game.
bolton did this same tactic on several occasions during the nite.
i agree with the choppion n push in the back rules. carey had no problem with that wen he palyed, niether did loewe so why bring in a rule now.

Adrian from Melbourne (Blues supporter), 29 Mar 2008 14:14 hide comment
no i wasnt at the game and i didn't watch any of it but the reason Bolton did it is because there is nothing he can legally do now as hes under sized. if he was able to chop the arms he wouldnt have needed to "tunnel" so i say let players chop the arms and put their hands in the back so we dont see anything dangerous happen again.

I also want to know if any person at the game or watching the game thought that what Bolton was doing was illegal or did every one jump on the issue when the saints brought it up.

I've got alot of Saint friends that didnt say anything on Monday to me but on Tuesday after it was relised it was all the could talk about.

i was there n i noticed it a bit. reiwoldt kept holdin his back n i said to my mate on the way home i thought reiwoldt was a little unlucky not to get a couple of free kicks for gettin his legs taken out from under him. i mean... ur not alowed to trip people while there running so why should u be able to take ppls legs from under them in the air.

if boltons undersized on reiwoldt thats tough ****. doesnt mean u can use tactics that are dangerous.

Tarrant from Melbourne (Blues supporter), 29 Mar 2008 13:19 hide comment
I agree that tunnelling isn't an issue, but there is this tendency to whinge about anything Sydney does. Similar to the reverse in the NRL, where Melbourne started slowing down the play-the-ball, and Sydney teams were very quick to whinge about it. As a rule, I like to ignore most of what Ross Lyon says; he's almost as bad to listen to as Mick Malthouse.
Tarrant from Melbourne (Blues supporter), 29 Mar 2008 10:14 hide comment
It is a valid point that if there is a crackdown on tunnelling, leading forwards will basically be able to protect themselves from any sort of spoil by jumping early and taking an overhead mark on the way down. There are a few too many rules brought in at different times concerning marking contests; they'd be better off scrapping all of the existing rules and interpretations, then sitting down one summer and working on a set of rules all at once which will be enforcable and allows defenders ample opportunity to spoil - it would be chaos for half a year, but we'd probably be better off for it afterwards.
Tom from Melbourne (Saints supporter), 29 Mar 2008 9:35 hide comment
Tunnelling is dangerous and dirty. I was at that game and Riewoldt was lucky not to badly hurt himself. Hands in the back should be allowed instead to give defenders a chance.
By the way John, S.A supporters can't shut their mouths during the game when any decision good or bad goes against them. Filthy bunch the crows and port supporters are.
