Saints and Swans = pure garbage
I hope anyone who criticised the quality of Thursday Night's Carlton vs Richmond game took a long, hard look at that pathetic excuse for a football game that Sydney and St Kilda - who are supposed to be second-favourites for the premiership - dished up, and re-evaluate their positions.

We all expected it to be a boring, low-scoring grind, because Sydney and St Kilda always play their football that way, but the pitiful lack of skills in all areas of the game, particularly the short passing, was just a joke. A combined 12-28-100 in a closed stadium. Need I say more?

Umpiring was equally bad on both parts. And if you have a problem with the style of play, don't watch it.

I don't partake in things I declare to "know" will be "boring", and if anyone does, then their boredom is their own fault.

Valid, but understand my predicament: if I watched Saturday night, I'd get boring St Kilda. If I watched Friday night, I'd have to listen to Bruce McAvaney. I need to watch some footy, otherwise it's just not winter.

Tarrant from Melbourne (Blues supporter), 4 Apr 2008 12:12 hide comment
Yes, boring. The entire third quarter was a tedious mixture of Carlton's lack of skills and St Kilda short-passing the ball down the ground. And whenever St Kilda lacked options in the forward-line, all they'd do is kick it back to Gram, who launched an almost always failed attempt at a 70m goal. Predictable, and tedious.

And did you seriously find Eddie Betts' goal in the final two minutes boring?

as boring as the 3rd quarter was yes.
mate. saints played like **** and still killed the blues.
that says a lot about carltons progess doesnt it?

Pretty much. The fact that none of Judd, Stevens and Hadley are up to full match fitness yet doesn't help. But you can definitely see the progress in the Carlton defenders. Still, by the same reasoning, it also says a lot about St Kilda's progress.
Matt from Melbourne (Saints supporter), 22 Mar 2008 22:27 hide comment
the game was ****
the tactics by both teams were ****
but most of all the umpires were pathetic.
sydeny have got to be the worst team to watch in the afl and tonite the saints fell into the trap opf not kicking long because the swans were flooding

Tarrant from Melbourne (Blues supporter), 22 Mar 2008 22:39 hide comment
Fell into the trap? You play that style every week. Your coach brought that gameplan from Sydney with him, and you're as bad to watch as each other. You may not see it, but the rest of us do.

Other than a couple of soft but correct free kicks which St Kilda benefitted from, I have no idea what you're talking about wrt the umpiring.

was there... umpiring was frustrating. there so inconsistant.
also its not like both teams didnt have a chance to score 10 plus goals.
stkilda had 15 behind n the swans had 13. onli 1 rushed behind. both teams were shocking at set shots. schnieder and kozi both missed chances in the last quarter to put sydney away. that young kid missed a chance at the death to put stkilda away. davis missed a coupld of shots late and kozi missed one from nearly dead infront. u cant say niether team didnt have a chance to kick 10+ goals and if one or both did i dont think we would be havin this discusion

Get over yourselves with ur sentimentality! The fact of it is, on telly it was a boring game to watch, simple. Doesn't necessarily mean that either team is or were s**t, it was just such a defensive game with no real flowing passages of play all this chipping and passing around to get a shot at goal, then miss. Of course we wouldn't be saying this stuff if it was a higher scoring game it's the goals that make it exciting is it not?

Matt from Melbourne (Saints supporter), 26 Mar 2008 20:59 hide comment
so y are ppl whinging about the way it was played if the reason there was so little goals was because there was so many missed oppourtunitys

Kristy from Melbourne (Bulldogs supporter), 26 Mar 2008 21:35 hide comment
Because it's not just about the missed opportunities, speaking from the perspective of someone who watched the game from the couch, it's hangin out for exciting free flowing passages of play that follow through. Between the 2 middle posts preferably, and that particular game just didn't deliver in that way. Ten points to you though for sticking up for your side. If the Doggies had of won in that fashion I'd probably be arguing the same points from the other side. A win is a win and in the end it's whatever works and being in the crowd is always better than watching it from home.

exactly. if anyone thinks stkilda will play like that this season there stupid.
ross lyon said at the end of the game he wanted to beat sydney at tehre own game (unfortunatly) and that is exactly wat they did... point by point.

ppl listen to the media to much and are commenting on the game even no they wernt there. there just assuming.

I went to the game as a neutral supporter and found it interesting to watch. It was by no means the best specatacle but it was good to see some sought of accountability, something that is rarely seen in AFL these days
Nick from Melbourne (Demons supporter), 23 Mar 2008 22:00 hide comment
its sydneys fault, they flood the backline and run down. they r the worsest team of playing footy.

Sorry mate, but I can guarantee that we won't get SMASHED by Hawthorn...
Anthony from Springvale (Magpies supporter), 23 Mar 2008 22:49 hide comment
I have to say it's St Kilda's fault too. Just remember only last season they played in another "boring" game against Hawthorn at the 'G. Ross Lyon learnt all of this being Paul Roos' assistant coach at Sydney.
John from Ballarat (Crows supporter), 24 Mar 2008 8:02 hide comment
The point of the matter Tarrant from Melbourne (Blues Supporter) Saints wanted to come out and beat Sydney at their own game, as was mentioned by their coach. which as they showed nobody has been able to beat the Swans when they play like that. So expect the Saints to be top of the ladder this year. There was an excuse for the crap footy on Saturday night, yet absolutly no excuse for that babble of crap on Thursday night, sorry Tarrant but you still cant expect us to feel sorry or sympathetic for that low grade footy. Plus you have to expect a lot of mistakes in such pressured situations like Saturday night, You have 2 excellent sides battling it out in a game plan built especially for high pressure. Anyone can win. The thing that pissed me off is how good Mattner looked in front of goal. We had him down back, the Swans have him on the Wing he is going to be a key to the Swans distance this year!!! As for Carlton they have nothing to look forward to this year apart from their showdown with Melbourne, the 2 wooden spooners balttling it out!!! Tarrant please Think about what you say before you say it and dont type in this forum due to the fact that your an angry person when your team loses and they will be doing lots of that this year

Damian from Brisbane (Bombers supporter), 25 Mar 2008 10:43 hide comment
yep there is not much more you can say about this game. the roof was closed and it was perfect for running and high scoring football. both teams were woeful and to be honest it wouldnt suprise me if both teams kept playing like this all year. st kilda are overated and sydney you can put a line through them for this year

Stephen from Blacktown, 22 Mar 2008 22:06 hide comment
The Saints just played the game the way the Swans play it and got across the line. It's not pretty football but it was an effective way to beat the Swans. yes both sides made mistakes but it was only the 1st game of the season.

Austin (Bombers supporter), 23 Mar 2008 13:50 hide comment
It wasn't an 'effective way to beat the Swans' - the game could have gone either way and, like the previous 2 matches the Saints were involved in, only luck and questionable umpiring stopped the opposition sides kicking the winning score.

Ok Austin you have a point but all that matters is the four points in the end! The Saints now just have to move forward and not look at the past.

As for the NAB cup, I know your still reeling over the loss but the past is past move on and look at your next game tomorrow and how your team is going to overcome the Roos.

All that matters is September, not expecting St Kilda to be there yet they need to improve a bit more. Let's just take one week at a time. You never know whats going to happen next.

And another fine example of the Saints dominating the competition! They've had a string of successive victories this season where the outcome was never in doubt! Against Sydney they had their (pretty much) best side out on the field and kicked well over 50 points! It's no wonder, with the Swans letting the Saints play their preferrd game plan that the Saints dominated right across the board and ultimately won the match quite convincingly!

I used to question why St. Kilda was viewed as one of the best sides in the competition - even to the point where I thought that they aren't playing to win, they already went shopping and bought themselves more silverware - but after last night's convincing display, in perfect conditions for AFL footy to kick 6 - 15 was brilliant. They blew me away with their slick skills, pinpoint passing and accuracy in front of goal!

On the basis of last nights dominance, I can't see how any other team in the competition can hope to outscore them.. I'm oficially on the St. Kilda Bandwagon for 2008 and anyone who says they aren't the best team in the competition obviously wasn't watching the fine, convincing, skillful display they put on last night!

Yeh the game was **** with all the flooding, but im glad the saints won and im sure that was a once off game, and st.kilda v carlton should be much different. A blowout in favour of the saints.

Agreed that was the most boring game I think I've ever seen. Give me the Carlton v Richmond game any day. 28 combined behinds that was woeful to watch.

On the up side Barry Hall was funny, The Clarke brothers are good to watch. That Tackle by Barry Hall at the end of the game against Schneider that was hilarious. Pity they couldn't rub his nose in it tho. Not that I have anything against Schneider I think he's pretty good he's a top pick up for the Saints.

All I can say is I'm glad I watched the West Coast v Brisbane game on Foxtel instead.
