What is wrong with Hawthorn?
I kn they have had injuries this year but have recently got most of there players back, is it there game plan is wrong or is there no self belief, please give me your views.

A few things have gone wrong Andrew. Firstly injuries have hurt, not neccessarily the number of injuries but more because of how they have effected our structure. Losing your CHB and FB when you are already low on tall defensive players makes it really tough.

Our other strength last year was a ability to turn defence into attack and we have lost most of our key running defenders at points through the season. Ladson, Gilham, Birchall, Hodge, Guerra, Young and Ellis have all missed footy this year.

The other important thing this season has proved is that our list doesnt yet have the same depth as other clubs such as collingwood, st kilda and geelong. We have replaced those guys mentioned above with a heap of guys playing their first season of senior footy such as shoenmakers, sheils, muston, whitecross, suckling and dowler. What a lot of people forget is that they still have the youngest list in the comp. When they beat Melbourne the hawks sides average age was younger and average number of games was less.

Now because we have been losing our confidence is shot and we have reverted to playing the way we did 3 years ago, farting around with the ball too much. I can assure you as a hawks fan this is really bloody frustrating.

So there you go, thats my take on it anyway. I hope that helps a bit!

Matt,

I think you are pretty much spot on. Players such as Hodge have been injured and the most important player in my book Sewell has struggled fitness wise due to injury and late start to the pre season. Still a very young list with lots of upside.

I reckon a fair bit of blame has to lie with Clarkson and their game plan. It seems like they don't have a back up game plan when their zoning doesn't work. They stick to the same game regardless of how its working or the conditions. The game against West Coast was a prime example. Shocking conditions which should have seen them just getting the ball forward as quickly as possible yet they stuffed around trying to pinpoint passes and continually turned it over. When you have two big blokes like Roughead and Franklin waiting for the ball, why wouldn't you just get it them any way you can in those sort of conditions?

I dont think its the game plan so much to be honest but i do agree that we dont really have much of a plan B. I think at the moment we just lack confidence and the kids decision making is just too slow which is why they always seem to get caught with the ball and muck around with it. I think when our running brigade is back and match fit we will start to play some good footy, only problem is it might be too late by then. We just need to get the ball to Bateman, Sewell and Mitchell as often as possible and wehn laddo, young and rioli are back up and running get it to them as well. Hodge is needed in the midfield when Gilham comes back in. Our forward 50 entries are disgraceful and we are turning the ball over too much in defense. i think our game plan will still be effective when we have a full strength side but at the moment the kids aren't up to it.

To be honest I haven't seen a hell of a lot of Hawthorn this year and based my comments on the West Coast game mainly. I think it's a shame Hawthorn aren't emulating last years form because I enjoyed watching them last year. I just hope they don't get back to last years form for the Collingwood match. You guys smashed us both times last year.

Injuries are a factor more so because of most of them being defenders, but if your going 2 be a contender u must be able 2 cover injuries well.I think more than anything we've lacked that killer instinct, and like matt said when a team starts losing so often they lose all confidence and is so important in any team sport
