Essendon gives Collingwood a head start!
I was rapt to see McVeigh ruled out of this Friday's blockbuster against Collingwood for missing training. Yet it doesn't make much sense from Essendon's perspective. Jobe Watson is already out so now they are without 2 of their best midfielders and leaders around the club. Surely another punishment could have been handed out, like telling the entire club to bring their dirty cars to the club Thursday to be cleaned inside and out by McVeigh. With the club moving forward at great pace this could set them back and all the good work of beating Carlton last week will be undone if they lose this week. If they wanted to suspend him why not do it against a bottom 8 club in a few weeks and not make it offical with media. Sometimes examples need to be set and Collingwood did so with Didak and Shaw last year with fantastic reward this year, same as Geelong in 2007 with Johnson, again with even greater reward. Essendon in my opinion have shot themselves in the foot this time, setting a poor example of leadership, one the fans will be extremely angry about come Friday post game if they lose. Thoughts???

I wouldn't worry. They can sort out their own problems. Essendon without Watson + McVeigh will definately hurt their chances against Collingwood this weekend. Collingwood if both Pendlebury and Davis are back (Pendlebury is 50/50) then Collingwood should win. Regardless will be a very entertaining match regardless of who plays.

Crazy over-reaction that punishes the whole side, the entire club and all their supporters. Should have been a punishment that affects McVeigh alone. I'd be exteremly pissed off if I was an Essendon supporter.

I know this concept of "discipline" is relatively unheard of at Lexus Centre, but at most clubs there is a policy to punish players for indiscretions, and to do it in a manner which makes it clear that they have let their team down. If you think that's poor leadership, then I can't see how I'm going to convince you otherwise.

Tarrant, I don't think McVeigh indiscretion is any where in the league of Didak, Shaw(s) etc. Missing a vital game in which could cost valuable momentum isn't showing leadership. There are plenty of other punishments including financial that would show stronger leadership. It's not like McVeigh is a problem child and in all fairness, it has probably cost him the role he wants, being captain.

McVeigh's indiscretion is not in the league of Didak/Shaw, but neither is his punishment - one week instead of the whole season. As it is at the tribunal, fines are basically considered to be no punishment, and washing everyone's cars belongs in the same box as bleaching/shaving hair, wearing the mascot costume - a silly "mates rules" punishment for the very minor, like missing ten minutes of training because traffic was bad, or forgetting your boots, or something like that. The week suspension, is a standard punishment from under 10s right up to the seniors: miss training, and expect to miss the next game, or spend most of it on the pine. Perhaps a fine would have been enough, but most clubs opt for the week suspension, and just because that's not Collingwood's policy, doesn't make it poor leadership or policy.

Agreed a fine would be a better act. Shaw/ Didak missed several games and so they should. As for washing the cars, there are many silly acts the leadership groups of several clubs do to under performing teammates to make individuals aware on a funny perspective. It does set an example but I think it is a bit harsh and I'm happy with that seems as we play them.

It'll hurt our chances, but I don't disagree with the punishment. To offer a different sanction is a weak approach. Hypothetically speaking IF McVeigh is the player the match is won or lost around, what will teach him more of a lesson? Washing cars, playing the game and winning or being sat out and seeing us lose?

How about you go wash the Essendon players cars Guy.... and as if any club would wait to play a bottom 8 side to suspend someone...you continue to be the laughing stock of the forum Guy!!! And make sure you scrub under the guards.

I'm a laughing stock Brad??? Fair enough but the fact remains, the club is bigger than the individual and Essendon have harmed their chances of winning. By the way, if a club didn't make it offical, how would anyone know about the suspension?? All the good work the Bombers up until this point could be undone with a Collingwood touch up. Kids thrive on confidence. No Brad, it is you that is the stupid one.

The only one showing a poor example of leadership here is Mark McVeigh. Just comiing off a stupid suspension, he lets himself, but more importantly his team down, just when the team is starting to prosper. And this bloke is supposed to be the next captain. Well done to the Essendon Footy Club for setting the example. The only reason fans will be upset was that McVeigh let his team down again, not that Essendon did the right thing to suspend him.

See your point but the long-term reward of hurting him - a bloke that probably won't play in a premiership anyway - outweighs the short-term loss. Don't let your mates down.

Knighta is sending a clear message to all players and should be commended. What message would be sent to a kid who gets dropped to make way for McVeigh?

Well I read in today's Herald Sun that the Essendon fans are filthy with McVeigh and rightly so. The fans have spoken and as a Collingwood man I'm happy to play a side that doesn't contain McVeigh and Watson. Go Pies!!

What a dick, he had the Essendon captaincy in the bag two weeks ago. As for him being one of their better players, I think the nail was firmly hit on the head a number of years ago, PASSENGER!

Well.. firstly it was a stupid thing for McVeigh to do.. Very stupid. He's let the side down and all us supporters.. But Knights made the right call. Over the last 3 years McVeigh has developed as a player, he may well have been a paseenger in Hirdy's time but he's gotten a hell of a lot more involved recently. But I doubt he'll be our next captain. Ryder, or Watson are much more likely.

Oh.. My other point was that even without Watson and McVeigh, we will still have a better 22 on the field this week than last time we played Collingwood. And if we had more fit players on the bench we wouldn't have let them get so close last time either!
