Most Overrated Players in the AFL

Dale Thomas is a kid, so how does a kids ability yet to prosper make him overrated... he hasn't even played a 100 games yet and his overrated please pull your heads in give him time to grow mentally and physically... His exciting to watch, and even when he makes errors i know with time he will master all them and become a great little player... Go Pies...

He is overrated for the following reason: Collingwood fans and media consistently bombard us with comments about "Thomas and Pendlebury", "Pendlebury and Thomas," "Thomas and Pendlebury." Outside of Collingwood, we can all see it with Pendlebury. All we see with Thomas is a little boy who plays flashy football, rather than good quality team football. Right at this moment, he does not deserve equal billing with Pendlebury, or even close to it. Quite frankly, I don't think he'll ever be close to Pendlebury. Furthermore, Mike Sheahan had Dale Thomas in his top 50 at the start of the season. He will not be there at the end of 2008, and I doubt you could honestly disagree with me. Perhaps he'll be back in there some day â€" in fact, he probably will â€" but certainly not this year. That is why he is overrated.

Tarrant, you make some good points and I'II agree with almost all of them. However Rebecca has made the best point about Thomas, how can someone who has played less than 60 games be over rated?? Yes you might hear alot about Pendlebury and Thomas but why not, they are young and exciting. Anyone who says Thomas is over rated will in several seasons maybe sooner be eating humble pie.

I see your point and agree in principle, but I suppose I'll bring up Mike Sheahan's top 50 again - because that's a clear example of a here-and-now rating system where the player, however young he may have been, was rated higher than he probably deserved to be. But as you rightfully point out, none of this means that he's necessarily consigned to being overrated for life. He's got a whole career to prove himself. Also, the fact that he's basically the marketing face for Collingwood comes into effect. That makes him seem highly rated in the eyes of the public, so when he underperforms compared with his teammates, we can rightly feel as though he has been overrated in that role.

Yes indeed. Really though Mike Sheahan's top 50 means jack **** to me. He is the over rated media personality, several stars and many clubs of the AFL think lowly of him. At the end of the day the question must be asked??? How does Collingwood and Mick Malthouse rate Dale Thomas? Not bad for a young bloke in his 3rd year. Heaps of promise to work with. The over rated list was crap anyway where was Des Healand or Aaron Firoa??? A novice asking a question. Dale Thomas shouldn't have been there, alot of people hopped on board as he plays for Collingwood. Simple as that.

That highlights the biggest issue - how does one define overrated? Nobody can doubt that Aaron Fiora was drafted way too high, and was overrated by talent scourts. But does anyone actually rate him now? Certainly not. So is he overrated? You say yes because he was then; I say no because he isn't now. The whole debate is very vague.

Yeah and was Polak????????????????????????? Number 4 was he in in the draft behind Hodge, Ball and Judd. There is the most over rated player according to the draft and potential. Even before his accident with the tram, a likely delisting at the end of the year for Richmond.

what? Luke Hodge is their best player and midfielder, throw in Shane Crawford, Guerra, Dew and McGlynn and u dont think the game would not have been different? Im not saying injuries were the only reason they lost but it does affect results and if Hawthorn played the Dogs at the MCG come september im very sure that the Hawks would get up. Roughead isnt even in Hawthorns top 5 players so i wouldnt say they rely on him a great deal. He is just a foil for Franklin.

injuries is a part of football and how a club can manage there injuries and the depth of there lists is a key to how good the team really is. im not saying those players wouldnt have had an impact, offcourse they would. but if a team doesnt ahve depth wats gonna happen if 2 or 3 of there players go down finals time? either suspended like hodge and crawford and guerra have a knack of doing, or injured like dew and guerra (had a fair few hammy problems) do. if roughead wasnt there, buddy wouldnt have as much impact as he does. roughead takes the 2nd best defender each week and provides another option up forward for hawthorn. he mite not be up there in the top 5 skill wise, but he is definatly one of the most important 5 in the team.

i agree injuries r a part of footy but the comment was made in reference to someone saying Hawthorn are overated. All im saying is i would like to see both teams face off full strength b4 comments like that r made. Roughie does take the 2nd best defender agreed but ive seen games where he doesnt play and Lance still kicks a bag. Hawks have multiple options up there in Willow and also Boyle when fit.

yeah would be interesting both teams at fulll strength and i ignored the comment bout the hawks being over rated coz thats just stupid. the point i was trying to make was itll probs never happen and thats y i said that its the team who manages there list best that wins the flag. look at the cats last year, and the swans in 06. the swans used somethin like 28-30 players that year. thats just awesome management

why would u say the Hawks r overated? shouldnt u be worrying about ur own team? that was a ridiculous comment to make. How r they overated? they have lost 1 game all season. I would like to see that match again come finals time with both sides at full strength and see what the result is. Dont worry, im not worried about my team at all. Going along quite nicely at the minute.

the hawks have be overrated cause they have played any good teams yet (maybe the pies), but they haven't the swans or cats. they have played and had lucky wins and they are getting all this attend when they haven't played a few teams yet. i not really need to worry about my team they are doing very well for the moment. i will worry about my tream when they are slipping down the ladder.

Havent played anybody? They beat us, they beat Brisbane in Brisbane, beat Adelaide and beat the Kangaroos who u lost to. Hawthorn r going very well apart from the weekend. Unfortunatley we will have to wait for the Geelong matchup and the Swans is in rd 15. They do go to Adelaide next week so that is a big test.

anyone can beat those teams. we will just wait and see if the hawks can go the way like a lot of people have tip them to do. the hawks could feel the pressure and lose by heaps. or they could beat teams by heaps and play in the grand final. i think the hawks are good team but they are just getting a head of them selves and so are the guys who doing the odds for betting. anything can happen between now and round 22 (that goes for all 16 clubs). the dees could finish in the top 8 (i know the won't happen but you never know until round 22).

do u think its fair enough that people arent getting on the Dogs due to last seasons fade out or do u think that they shouldnt take last year into consideration and rate them on how they currently r playing, just a question. Do u think it would take making a prelim to get back the respect?

Hey Daniel, I know this question was directed at Katherine but I'm going to add my 10 cents as well. I personally think that ALL teams should be rated on how they are currently playing. Saying that though if a team is only as good as their last performance, for example West Coast last night, they did not look like a team that was in the bottom four. But was it only because they were playing at home? So should we rate them higher when they are playing on Subi? Or was it just the great SYDvWC game that is every time they play in recent years? And Freo they have lost 6 games by under 20 points, and as far as I'm concerned have been as competitive as anyone in the league right up until the last 10 mins of any of those losses. But because they just cant seem to get over the line and keep getting beaten in the dying minutes, nobody is prepared to rate them AT ALL. I just think that (and I'm not exempt from this) we all are too quick to rate teams and players because of their win to loss ratio. For example the Tiges had 10 top ten draft picks playing yesterday, all showing positive signs at times. Look at Cotchin I guess it's a bit too early to rate him yet but he definitely displayed some real potential. Therefore as much as it pains me to say it, all the teams that have shown inconsistency over the past few seasons (Dogs, Freo, Tiges even Melb) wont be shown the respect they all equally deserve until they can prove themselves as serious finals contenders.

its good that people aren't jumping board us this seasons in a way but it can also be stupid. it is good cause there is less pressure to win and do well and it is also back cause it doesn't give us respect. if the dogs get to a prelim or even the grand final then the respect will coming back from everone (or most people)

Lots of touches, minimal impact. Not as amusing as the ridiculously selfish Nathan Brown - seven behinds from some of the most low-percentage and farcical places. There's a reason why teams he plays in keep winning wooden spoons.

Over rated? Chris Grant! Of course I mean it! I had to watch him. He's had his moments! yeah! but he's not what people hyped him to be. He was just an average player on the field doin there role but I don't think he did anything super crazy. He would of won the brownlow a while back too and I'll disagree with his ban that year, but I can't say how he won it. I don't think many people would agree with me, but honeslty I think he is overrated.

Disagree. Hird could turn a game on his own and was a terrific leader. He is a future hall-of-fame Legend, without doubt.
