name change
Hey why don't we ask the committee to demand that from now on this club is called Footscray Football Club and our mascot is the bulldog , just like North melbourne and the kangaroo. you don't hear whinging mick or eddie being called the team of magpies , it's collingwood . or actually colliwobbles

I recently had the very good fortune to chat to Brian Lake about this issue. At a time when Footscray was fighting to survive, tactically it was right for FFC to become the WB to expand their supporter base throughout the western suburbs and it's worked! Sentimentally I think it would be great to win the flag as FFC.

No. Officially, we're the Footscray Football Club, trading as the Western Bulldogs, hence the FFC on the back of our guernsey.
Our name was changed because of the negative perception that the name Footscray carried. At the time, Footscray, but never the football club, was associated immediately with violent crime and Vietnamese drug dealers.
The Western Bulldogs more accurately reflects our operations. The club does a lot of magnificent outreach work throughout the west. From talking to street kids in Footscray, St.Albans and Werribee, visiting refugees in the Maribyrnong detention centre, to soup kitchens at night in the west, the Dogs do a lot of magnificent work that doesn't get media exposure because we're not Collingwood.
That even omits Spirit West services, which provides training and work opportunities to disadvantaged western suburbs youth.
The fact is, Whitten Oval will always be home, but we're no longer just a Footscray club, but truly representative of the western suburbs as a whole, and that broadens our appeal.
Their ethics in looking after the disadvantaged have even hooked people like me, who have never lived in the west. I grew up respecting Footscray, and I now love the Western Bulldogs. We still have our identity and our home, something that is slowly beginning to become rare in the AFL.

Whats that you say? you Love the Western BuLLdogs!!
Thats good enough for me John!

I know how much community aid and charity work the CLub does!
i think your missing the major characteristic of charity tho! It means to give assistance or something of vaLue to those Less fortunate without seeking any credit, profit or recognition! Media exposure is irreLevant! Do you reaLLy think a homeLess individuaL or famiLy faLLen on hard times that needs to take advantage of soup kitchen services wants the 6 o'cLock news and a mob of press in their faces?? I dont think so!

We trade and operate as the western buLLdogs! and to be honest with you, i dont think LocaL crime statistics are enough for a cLub to change its name! Have you waLked through the streets of CoLLingwood LateLy, what about Richmond? Let me teLL you there is pLenty of vioLent crime and drug deaLers of aLL nationaLities incLuding vietnamese around Victoria street richmond and every corner in CoLLingwood and CLifton HiLL!! What about St KiLda- are they gonna change their name to the bayside saints because St KiLda is fuLL of smackies, meth addicts, drug deaLers and prostitutes on every corner! not onLy after dark by the way but in broad dayLight?? No chance!

OfficiaLLy, technicaLLy, whatever!! We're never going to be recognised as, or caLLed the Footscray FootbaLL CLub ever again (except when BLighty's commentating!) so why waste the time and energy! Footscray wiLL aLways be the birthpLace of our cLub- the Mecca, if you wiLL? Never forget your roots- but aLso, never stagnate! & keep moving forward!

WestSide tiLL i die!!

just checked out fnwb!! -theres goes 20 minutes of my Life i aint gettin back!!

SeriousLy mate- you've compiLed a thorough and interesting HISTORY of my beLoved cLub and for that i congratuLate you! However it is HISTORY!!

The BuLLdogs pLay in the AFL now- not the vfa or the vfL! to survive we needed to embrace and stake cLaims on the territory from west meLb. to werribee! if we hadnt broadened our supporter base we wouLd be supporting the brisbane buLLdogs or the MeLbourne buLLdogs or some other abomination!!

we stiLL have OUR cLub! on our turf!! im assuming you were at the western ovaL over a dozen years ago when we had to raise over a miLLion in a day to survive!! be gratefuL that day went the way it did- and appreciate what we have!

if we had the membership, support, cash and success that eddies cLub has- we wouLdn't be having this discussion.... but the Long and short of is...... we don't now and we didn't then! so rather than trying to fLog your pubLications to buLLdogs supporters... Let them downLoad it for free and teLL them to buy an extra membership- or for the 4thousand that didnt renew their memberships from Last year! puLL your heads in and reach into your pockets!!!

We are the WESTERN BULLDOGS FOOTBALL CLUB...... &if your not with us- your against us!

Yeah but the die hards dont accept that as being good enough. Theres a big problem with the Bulldogs as a name as well as the symbol of the "angry" Bulldog on the Guernsey I'll call it angry they like to disrespect it by refering to it as "the laughing or smiling bulldog" or something like that because their disgruntled about it being there. And "they" being the kind of fanatics that created the website fnwb.com which is a site dedicated to the idea that it is "Footscray not Western Bulldogs"

Good on em their dedicated to their cause but honestly I love the name Western Bulldogs, and living in the Western suburbs of Melbourne for the last decade or so I'm proud as punch that we are now called The Western Bulldogs, and I hope it stays that way. The Footscray Football Club history will always be there, and we should all be proud that we fought off a merger in 1996 rather than bitter that we changed our name with the intention of creating a better image and reputation for the Club. It was never intended to personally attack the loyal supporters and to be fair perhaps if the club had of asked for the opinions of the fans before they changed the name the outcome may have been different. Maybe not.

Wow. That guy is so hardcore...

But honestly, I don't like the bulldogs design. I think we could have a better uniform...
