I have been saying this since we made the prelim in '04 & I'll say it again this year.... Geelong need to keep 2 elements to their game & they'll have the talent to burn most sides off the park: they need to play it one game at a time (i.e. dont believe their own press), and they need to ruthlessly finish off teams on the park. '06 was a shining example of what happens when they dont do that; '07 the perfect example of what this team can achieve if they do.

CATS ALL THE WAY FOR '08....

there are many perfectly good reasons why geelongs 06 season was crap but i reckon youve got the right idea your thoughts are good

Would be interested to hear what you think caused '06.... I've always personally felt that they read too much into their own press in the first half that season.

Simple fact is, they went prelim in '04, within 3 seconds of a prelim in '05 (I mentioned not ruthlessly finishing teams off, that semi was the best example ever of why, until last year, Geelong was notorious for losing close games), we won the NAB in '06 & blew two teams off the park in rnds 1 & 2.

Then somehow we lost 8 out of the next 9 games of the season for some reason. And what makes that all the more confounding is that they won 7 of the next 11 to come within 2 games of playing finals again - at that point in time we were the hottest side outside the top 8 & if we'd managed to make 8th, might've even gotten to another semi on exposed form.

Funny thing was, at round 5 last year, I was beginning to see '06 all over again.... we'd had 2 massive wins & lost 3 close ones... fortunately, last year, that 3rd loss was a real kick in the guts & they started playing ruthlessly & the famous "lid" was put on their season until GF day....

So outta curiosity, what reasons did you put on the '06 slump??

I hope that they can go back to back. I want to have to go and get 2008 tattooed under my 2007 premiers tatt. i still think that they have a bit to catch the best team Ive ever seen and thats the lions of 01-03.

Me as a geelong fan, im lucky enough to go nearly every geelong game is victoria. I say geelong has a good chance at winning the grand final 08 but there season in 07 many people would argree was extremly good with the brownlow medal (jimmy bartel) VFL grand fianl and 9 all australias and of coruse the toyota afl grand final and much more in my oppinion not many teams can top that in one season but many teams can get into the grand final this year its two early to tell if geelong will win

i reckon the hawks are our bogey team, as good as 07 was we didnt beat them and just like geelong a couple of years ago they have a bunch of talented under-rated youngsters. my crystal ball says its a geel v haw GF in 08 and we can finally get one back on 1989.

We will never have another year like 2007 again - it was MAGIC!! But then who knows, we just have to take each game on its merits and not get big headed. GO CATS

The cats were the best by a mile last year. This year they will be hunted by every team and will go into every match as hot favorite. I hope the team can handle the pressure as the reigning champs. I do think that they are more than capable of back to back glory. Lets not get to carried away about three in a row at this stage.

Back to back is a huge possibily, so much depth, and talent in this side. The dynasty is almost inevitable for this team. Nathan Ablett is a big loss, he had not even shown us what he can really do, but Tom Hawkins is yet to show us his stuff. They could be as good as thre Lions, there is no excuse why they carnt be

I don't think we have the best 2s at all anymore, with King, Callan, Gardner, Playfair all traded I think our depth is nowhere near it was and hope we have a blessed run with injuries like 07' or we may slide dramatically

Nathan Ablett is soft and can go get stuffed.
Liam from Geelong (Cats supporter), 25 Jan 2008 23:56 hide comment
Nathan Ablett is a bigger loss then people think. He commands a good defender but he also does everything right. He leads well has good hands and can kick straight.

The tomahawk will have to step up big time to replace him. He has the talent. Now he has his opportunity.

If I were coach I'd let Nathan train 3 times a week and still play him. He wouldn't be as fit. He is more like Gary snr. He would still kick 3 a game and pull in the freaky marks like his old man did.

I hope for football lovers he comes back to the game, i have respect for him as he is being honest with himself and the team. Good luck to him what ever he chooses to do with life.
