Round 1 Review
Season opener against Port in Adelaide... and a win to start the season..

Unlike a lot of people, I was reasonably ok on playing them in Adelaide first up even as the reigning premier... and to come away with 4 pts in the bag is even better.

Reckon Chappy, Selwood & Corey all looked in fine touch.... Ablett had moments & the back six looks like they should cover for Egan reasonably ok thus far... although the biggest test of that will probably be round 4 against the saints.

Thought Gamble did ok in game 2 for the club... should be in the Rnd 2 squad... Westy likewise in his debut although he was pretty outsized in the ruck at times... Think Prissa should make the rnd 2 squad ahead of Tenace though..

Scratchy win otherwise... brilliant moments in the first half (conversion needs improving)... gritty in the second. Should be all the better for the run though.

Thoughts?

I was nervous about this game once I heard Ottens was out but once we got to 6 goals up was a bit disappointed we didnt grind them into the turf. I guess I was spoiled with last years efforts and want more of the same. Catters of 07' wouldn't have let Port come back like that. However I am rapped we got the 4pts and hopefully we smash the bombers this week as I can't stand them

It wasn't too long ago that Geelong couldn't BUY and interstate win. And it wasn't too long ago that we saw Geelong give up good leads only to be pegged back in the final quarter. So to hold on and grit out a win against the number 2 side with a couple of good players out was good to see.

9 points was a flattering margin for Port. They looked like they were going ot get blown out of the water in the first half.
Add 6 'posters' for the Cats and the margin might have looked a little bigger.

Good start for round 1.

for the first game i thought they looked reasonable although not completely fit.
i did have my doubting thomas moment when i thought they were gonna throw it away like the geelong of old and thank god port couldnt kick straight but they hung on and got the points and really at this stage thats all we can ask for.

The "Grand Final Rematch" should be at the MCG under the lights!! Although I doubt we could fill it against an interstate team like Port. It would be good though, to have a proper Grand Final Rematch, so host it at the same place as the Grand Final was held. And then it could become a feature of Round One in years to come...

I hated the last quarter. Geelong looked flat and unfit- not only that; their basic skills fell by the wayside ie simple pass kicking.
I think we were very lucky to get away with it in the end. Chappy & Selwood were great, the two Coreys also good. Gazza showed signs of brilliance. Bartel was quiet in possessions, but he was at the bottom of almost every bunch-up & tackle - gutsy.
Has there been any word on Josh Hunt's ankle?

Agree on the first bit Dale - it'd be hard to play a Thursday night game @ SS lol. I'm actually happy about our first 3 fixtures - a GF rematch, a home game in Melb then a home game down there (I'm pretty sure it's been done like that so we can unfurl the premiership pennant both in Melb & Geel.

As for the result, tight like I expected (though I thought they'd jump us & we'd peg them back instead). Was scratchy, but then again I was worried about us when Ottens was withdrawn from the side - especially vs. Lade/Brogan.
As long as we're on song when it matters most by the end of the season. Given we were depleted, I'm more than happy - any win @ AAMI is great!
