FITNESS and enthusiasm wasn't an issue when dumped Essendon hardman Mark Johnson stepped out with the Kangaroos last weekend.

Johnson beat a group of players in a 3.2km time-trial, his first hit-out with an AFL club since being delisted by the Bombers.

"I feel very good, actually. It was really good to have a run. It's easier training with a group of blokes than by yourself," Johnson said.

He agreed to a check-up by the Roos' fitness staff after an approach from 2000 Essendon premiership teammate Darren Bewick, now an assistant coach at Arden St.
