The Magpies decide on a lighter pre-season claiming that it will ensure an increased availability in their players when required.

"The days of thinking you're going to flog blokes is well and truly over, that finished a long time ago," Collingwood coach Malthouse said.

"We have a very, very young side, so you can't be totally full-on because you've got to get those players through until pre-season competition and you don't want them breaking down.

"Then you've got your older players on the other side of the coin. You don't want to be working them overly hard either because you've got to understand they've been through 10 to 12, and in Burns's case 15, pre-seasons."
