Malthouse apologises for comments
Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse apologises for comments he made regarding the pre-season competition.

During an interview with Triple M prior to Collingwood's clash with Fremantle, Malthouse was critical of the decision to restrict the number of interchanges during NAB Cup matches.

"I like the pre-season competition, I think it is excellent outside of some of the stupid rules, which are, incidentally, instigated by stupid people," Malthouse said.

"You don't have to be blind Freddy to work out that 16 interchanges is absolutely ridiculous made by ridiculous people."

The AFL will not take action against Malthouse following his apology.

Yeah thats what you get for being a Vic at heart!!! You could stand their in front of the whole AFL board of directors and tell them that they are the biggest wankers in the world, as long as your wearing a Vic guernsey and say I am sorry they will, just stand there and say 'oh \know worries no pun intended"! But if your standing there in an interstate guersey then you'll get the full arm of the law. If someone like Neil Craig said those things, it wouldve been a $20,000 fine straight out with no changes with an apology! Its people like you that destroy our great game, with all these rules for Victorians and harsher ones for the other states... And Tarrant the 16 Interchanges is the most stupid rule compared with 9pts and 3 pointers. Those ones make the game more exciting, the 3pt rule should be apart of our great game, I am sick of sides being able to retreat the backline by running through for a behind. Yet I actually agree about the play on off the post thing, thats crap.

My preference would be for the current 1pt penalty, followed by a bounce 25m out from the goals. It gives defenders the opportunity to concede during pressure situations, but not the benefit of retaining the ball. It brings it more closely into line with corner kicks, goal-line drop-outs, goaltenders covering the puck/icing - but closest with covering/icing because hockey, like football, is always restarted from neutral contests.

How can Malthouse criticise 16 interchanges as a stupid rule? He's correct, but supergoals, three-point rushed behinds and play-on off the posts are infinitely stupider rules, and deserve to be criticised first.

I don't buy into all of this "limit the interchange" stuff, but then again I'm a hockey fan, and hockey players spend about 45 seconds on the ice at any one time, so that gives me a skewed view. I'm sure soccer/rugby union fans with the permanent substitutions in their games have different views.
