Matthew Allen Biography

Monday, 28 October 2019
Matthew Allen is keen for a second chance after failing to play a senior game in four years on the Eagles' list and being delisted by the club at the end of the 2019 season.

"I'm obviously really hopeful to remain in the AFL system, that's my dream and I certainly won't be giving that up. I'm weighing up my options at the moment and trying to figure out what's best to give it another shake," Allen said.

"I would've loved to have cracked into the side and played a game, but I've been able to grow in a few different areas. It's been a good four years, I've taken plenty out of it and hopefully it can help me in what's next."

West Coast delist Kurt Mutimer, Keegan Brooksby and Matthew Allen.

"The dedication and commitment that Kurt, Matthew and Keegan have displayed throughout their time at West Coast has been admirable and appreciated," Eagles footy boss Craig Vozzo said.

"The club thanks all three players for their contribution and wishes them all the very best in their future endeavours."

If it wasn't for a 'Sliding Doors' moment as a 16-year-old, untried West Coast tall Matthew Allen might just have finished plying his trade for the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League in 2019.

Allen's path diverted towards football shortly after being signed as a Strikers rookie for season three of the BBL.

"That was a great experience hanging around the Strikers guys for six weeks and a couple of weeks before the tournament. As a 16-year-old, it was exciting," Allen said.

"I played in a couple of internals (trials) and was next in actually in a 20/20 to face Shaun Tait at 16. I'm pretty glad I didn't have to go in.

"I really enjoyed cricket, but when I had stress fractures in my back I leaned towards footy."

Matthew Allen signs a new deal with West Coast to remain at the club in 2019.

"Matty's missed his entire first pre-season and a large majority of his first season with us so he was able to string a full pre-season together last year and we saw some reward and improvement, particularly in the back half of last year when he was playing a mid/forward role," Eagles football manager Craig Vozzo said.

"We're really excited that at 193cm and with his work rate and running capacity with where Matthew can take his game next year … we think he can play a number of roles for us."

Monday, 22 October 2018
Matthew Allen signs a new one-year deal with West Coast to remain at the club in 2019.

Allen will be one of only two 2015 NAB AFL Draft survivors who hasn't pulled on their team's jumper at the elite level in 2019.

Wednesday, 25 November 2015
West Coast select Matthew Allen with pick No.62 in the 2015 NAB AFL Draft.

"He's a 193cm forward that gets around the ground really well for his size. A lead-up type player, left-foot kick – quite a strong boy. He'll probably take a little time but we're really pleased to bring him in," Eagles recruiting manager Rohan O'Brien said.
