Dayle Garlett's immediate football future is in doubt after Swan Districts rejected his return to play for the club this season.

Swan Districts' board reportedly voted against allowing Garlett to resume his WAFL career for the club.

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson says Dayle Garlett can still make it back to the AFL.

"It's been a really tough battle for Dayle. Hopefully he can just go back to play in the WAFL this year and rekindle his desire and commitment to play the game," Clarkson said.

"It hasn't worked out on this occasion, but he's not lost to AFL footy either. I think he can still give himself a chance to play in the years ahead."

Dayle Garlett quits AFL, telling Hawthorn his time as an AFL player is over.

"Unfortunately this situation hasn't worked out as the club or Dayle would have hoped, and while we're disappointed we understand his decision," Hawthorn football manager Chris Fagan said.

"Despite the club's efforts over the past six months to help him adjust to an elite lifestyle, Dayle has found the regimented systems and standards of a professional club challenging."

Hawthorn football manager Chris Fagan hopes Dayle Garlett doesn't regret his decision to walk away from the AFL.

"He's got to look at the decisions that he makes and the consequences that there are for those decisions," Fagan said.

"Hopefully he will learn from the experience that he's just had and … we would love nothing more than to see him really pursue his football career down the track when he's ready and when he's mature enough."

Dayle Garlett appears set to play for Swan Districts in the WAFL following his exit from Hawthorn after the club formally re-listed him.

Hawthorn captain Luke Hodge says Dayle Garlett must adhere to the club's strict training regiment and standards before being considered for selection.

"That expectation and consistency of training, to rock up on time every day, was something he was finding tough," Hodge said.

"It's not just the offensive side of things, it's the defensive side and everything else. You need to be consistent for a long time if you want to get a game.

"And we rate ourselves very highly in the discipline side of things – being on time and doing everything right."

Friday, 21 March 2014
Dayle Garlett will return to Melbourne next week after being given time off to head home to Perth.

"He's still progressing. He's got some issues going on that he just needs to address," Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson said.

"He's still around our club, and he had to go back to Perth this week to do some stuff back there, but he'll be back in the fold next week."

Jarryd Roughead says he and his teammates have rallied around draftee Dayle Garlett, who has admitted to struggling with the demands of elite football.

The Hawks confirmed on Saturday that Garlett, 20, will not play AFL or VFL football for an indefinite period of time, but he will continue to train with the club.

The decision was made after the youngster spoke about his issues to coach Alastair Clarkson and football operations manager Chris Fagan.

"It shows how good a kid he is, the way the way that he's been able to talk to not only 'Clarko' and 'Fages' but some of the boys as well," Roughead said at Hawthorn's family day at Glenferrie Oval on Sunday.

"He's been able to open up and say that he's struggling a little bit.

"But he's come to a great place in Hawthorn and we'll get around him, for sure."

Dayle Garlett's fledgling AFL career is at the crossroads after the Hawthorn recruit told the club he was struggling to cope with the demands of elite-level football.

He will not play AFL or VFL football for Hawthorn's teams in the near future but he will continue to train with the club.

Veteran hawk Sam Mitchell says young teammate Dayle Garlett isn't quite ready for AFL football yet.

"With some of his footy stuff you just think, wow. And so much of how he plays comes naturally to him," Mitchell said.

"He will be a good player, but he has a lot to learn about professionalism, lifestyle, game-plan and defensive actions.

"His good is very, very good. His bad just needs to get a bit better before he's ready for AFL footy."

Monday, 25 November 2013
Hawthorn skipper Luke Hodge says he believes new Hawk recruit Dayle Garlett has learnt the error of his ways off the field.

"Young guys make mistakes," Hodge said.

"He has made major improvements in the last 12 months off-field – everyone has known his ability has always been there on-field, but the club was very happy with how he has improved."

Garlett says his attitude towards footy has improved after being passed over by all 18 club's in last year's draft.

"I came to my senses and focussed on my footy, and realised what was important in life," Garlett said.

"If I made the AFL, I knew I'd have a great life ahead of me."

Friday, 22 November 2013
Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson says the club will treat Dayle Garlett like all of their other draftees.

"Whether it's Dayle or whether it's James (Sicily) or whether it's Billy (Hartung) ... the parameters and challenges will be the same for all three of them," Clarkson said.

"A little bit different in terms of their environments and where they've come from, but basically these are 18-year-old boys that need some protocols put around them to give them the best chance to be a professional footballer."

Thursday, 21 November 2013
After a series of off-field issues, Dayle Garlett finally has an opportunity to begin an AFL career after being selected by the Hawks with pick no.38 in the 2013 NAB AFL Draft.

"He knew what he needed to do. He needed the right support network around him and that's what we gave him," said Zach Green, the welfare manager for Indigenous Sports Management, which has been working with Garlett this year.

"I have promised his family that I will help with the transition. Hawthorn has a great system but I'll be there for him outside football, when he needs someone to talk to and to be with."
