Unrestricted free agent Trent Dumont is still searching for a new club as the clock ticks down on the free agency period.

"David Noble and his team have a plan in place that they're working through at the moment and Trent probably wasn't part of that plan. He had a nice, honest chat to them at the end of the year and I think both parties were happy to explore," Dumont's manager Robbie D'Orazio said.

"I think his best footy is in front of him. He's fighting fit and ready to go. He plays multiple positions, inside mid, great leadership as well."

Jack Ziebell will lead North Melbourne as captain again in 2020, with a leadership group that has doubled in size.

Ben Cunnington, Trent Dumont, Jasper Pittard and youngster Jy Simpkin have been promoted to the eight-man contingent ahead of Rhyce Shaw's first full season in charge.

Jamie Macmillan has retained his place, while Shaun Higgins has been elevated to vice-captain alongside 2019 deputy Robbie Tarrant.

"I reckon it's a really really good group in terms of its diversity," Roos coach Rhyce Shaw said.

"We've got guys that have been there for a period of time and a great crop of first-timers in Trent, Jy, Ben and Jasper who have all put in some real work to better themselves as players, teammates and people."

Ben Cunnington caps a career-best season with his second Syd Barker Medal as the Kangaroos' club champion for 2019.

Cunnington polled 242 votes and held out fast-finishing defender Robbie Tarrant (227) and Todd Goldstein and Trent Dumont (both 192).

Trent Dumont opens up about his mental health battle in 2014 when he believed his AFL career would be cut short after being levelled with charges – which were later dropped – following an altercation with a taxi driver in South Australia.

"I felt like my career was going to end. I let my family down, I let myself down, all the hard work I'd done to get in the position of life I was (in) at that moment," he said.

"In 2016 around my 21st birthday, it was the hardest time in my life, that period, that's when I was at my lowest. I couldn't see light at the end of the tunnel. I called off all 21st celebrations, closed myself off to everyone in those times.

"I did think about potentially what it would be like if I wasn't around anymore, would I be doing everyone a favour? But I never put it into action, but I definitely had thoughts about potentially suicide."

Dumont credited his family, friends and North Melbourne for supporting him through the incredibly challenging period.

"My mum, my sisters and my best mate had organised a surprise 21st. That moment there when I realised everyone that has a lot of love for me in that room, it was a big weight off my shoulders. It gave me a little bit of breathing room," he said.

"I started looking into getting help, I started jumping in with club psychs, from there I've just slowly built up my work in the mental space."

Thursday, 4 October 2018
Trent Dumont caps off a career-best season with a new two-year deal that will keep him at North Melbourne until the end of 2021.

The natural inside midfielder excelled in a new role on the wing, playing all 22 games and averaging 21 possessions in 2018.

Trent Dumont says he wants to spend his entire career at North Melbourne after signing a new two-year deal with the Roos.

Dumont played 20 senior games in his first three seasons at Arden St despite strong VFL form, with senior players firmly entrenched as the Kangaroos' starting inside midfielders.

"You do wonder sometimes whether you'll ever (cement a senior spot), but I just focused on working on my own game and I guess you back yourself to be able to find a regular spot eventually," Dumont said.

"If you just keep playing good footy, they'll reward it and I think that's happening this year."

Dumont has become a key member of North's midfield in 2017, averaging 21.5 possessions over the first six rounds.

"I'm just looking to be bolder with my movement, breaking through the front of stoppages," he said.

"I'll always keep working on my fitness and strength. My strengths are my clean hands and decision-making, so I'll try to really keep them up to scratch as well."

Dumont is enjoying being able to maintain such a simple focus after robbery charges against him from an October 2014 incident were finally dropped this January.

"I was really, really happy with how the club supported me. It felt like a second family almost and I was willing just try everything I had to stay here," he said.

"I would love to just stay here for my whole career."

Sunday, 26 March 2017
Kangaroos coach Brad Scott says Trent Dumont's improvement will see him move ahead of some of the club's more experienced midfielders.

"Trent's worked really hard underneath those guys," Scott said.

"Even if those some of those senior players were still here, I suspect Trent would work his way past a few of them."

Monday, 13 February 2017
Trent Dumont can finally focus fully on footy again after a two-year legal battle.

Prosecutors dropped charges of aggravated burglary against Dumont and his friend Joshua Lomas, after evidence from the cab driver didn't match CCTV footage.

The damage to Dumont's reputation was tough to handle as he copped grief on social media.

"Obviously they're misinformed, and they weren't there, and they don't understand what's going on with the process and stuff," Dumont said.

"So they can say what they want to say, but at the end of the day I knew within myself that I had done nothing wrong."

Wednesday, 25 January 2017
The trial against North Melbourne midfielder Trent Dumont on a charge of aggravated robbery charge has been stopped.

Dumont and Joshua Lomas were accused of robbing a taxi driver of $70 in Adelaide more than two years ago.

But after two days of evidence in the Adelaide District Court the prosecution has dropped the charges against the pair.

Dumont and Lomas were accused of pinning down cab driver Malusi Ketse and stealing from him at the end of a taxi ride from the city to suburban Banksia Park in the early hours of October 12, 2014.

But the pair denied the allegation, saying the driver dragged Dumont out of the cab and fell to the ground after an argument about correct change.

Judge Paul Muscat said he wasn't surprised by the decision to drop the charges.

"What is surprising is that it got this far," he said.

"It's the right decision but ... it comes about two years too late."

Corey Wagner will make his debut for North Melbourne this week against Hawthorn.

"I was in the change-rooms with all the boys – Ziebs (Jack Ziebell), Tippo (Joel Tippett) was there, Froggy (Trent Dumont) was there," Wagner said.

"Scotty (Brad Scott) came in and said, 'Do you reckon he could play?’. A couple said no, a couple said yes. Then he (Scott) shook my hand and said, 'You'll make your debut this week'."

Wednesday, 1 June 2016
Trent Dumont will stand trial on one count of aggravated robbery in January next year.

At a special directions hearing on Wednesday, the District Court of South Australia set January 23, 2017, as the start date for the prosecution case against Dumont and a co-accused, with three to four days set aside for the hearing.

Dumont is alleged to have been involved in the robbery of a taxi driver following an incident in the early hours of Sunday, October 12, 2014, after two men were picked up by a cab on North Terrace in Adelaide.

Friday, 3 July 2015
Trent Dumont's encouraging progress in 2015 has earned him a new two-year deal with North Melbourne.

Dumont's initial two-year contract at North was due to expire at the end of this season, but he has now recommitted to the Roos to the end of 2017.

"It's an exciting time for the club. We've got a good young list and hopefully we'll become really strong and a powerhouse of the competition," Dumont said.

Sunday, 26 April 2015
Trent Dumont makes his AFL debut for North Melbourne at Kardinia Park with 5 disposals (4 kicks and a handball) and a goal in a 16-point win over Geelong.
Saturday, 25 April 2015
Trent Dumont will make his debut for North Melbourne against Geelong.

"He's a natural footballer, he's a tough inside midfielder who can win his own ball and he's a fierce tackler," North Melbourne coach Brad Scott said.

"He knows how to read the play and he's worked really hard in the pre-season to get an opportunity."

Monday, 9 February 2015
Kangaroos coach Brad Scott says Trent Dumont was the last name he expected to hear when told that one of his players had been involved in an early morning off-field incident late last year.

"It was a wake-up call for Trent," Scott said.

"Because if I got the call from (North football director) Geoff Walsh saying that one of our players had been involved in an early-morning incident Trent would have been about 44th or 45th on my list of the players who (I thought) would have been involved in something like that."

Scott says Dumont has been exceptional during the club's pre-season training this year.

"He's a really hard-working guy and I think we'll see him play senior footy this year," Scott said.

"His preparation going back to the Utah camp (in November) has been outstanding. While we only took 13 players over there, he was certainly a standout."

Tuesday, 28 October 2014
South Australian police have arrested and charged young North Melbourne player Trent Dumont over his alleged involvement in the robbery of a taxi driver.

The alleged incident happened in Adelaide in the early hours of Sunday October 12 after two men were picked up by a cab driver on North Terrace.

Domont, 19, and another 19-year-old man from the Adelaide suburb of Para Vista have been bailed to appear in court next month.

"A 19-year-old man from Para Vista was arrested after he contacted police last night, following the release of CCTV images of the suspects inside the cab yesterday," a police statement said.

"Further enquiries today have led to the arrest of the second suspect, a 19-year-old man from Victoria.

"Both men have been charged with aggravated robbery and have been bailed to appear in the Holden Hill Magistrates Court on 25 November."
