"Confirmation that Jackson has torn his ACL is extremely disappointing for him and the club," Cats football manager Steve Hocking said.

"His development came along in leaps and bounds last year and he was definitely in the mix to become a permanent member of our back six this season after showing great promise throughout the pre-season.

"As a club we will ensure he is provided with all the support he needs to work through the process."

Geelong will send promising young defender Jackson Thurlow for scans on Monday after he was stretchered from the field with an apparent serious knee injury in the third quarter of the Cats' NAB Challenge match against Essendon at Deakin Reserve in Shepparton.

"The docs have had a little bit of a look but they can’t confirm anything yet," Geelong assistant coach James Rahilly said after the game.

"He hasn’t had much of a go, just fingers crossed he is all right and he can be part of that back line that we need.

"He has had a great pre-season, he would have been a good chance for round one if that’s the case. His rebound, his ball use, has been really important for us, so we just cross our fingers."

"I've just been really happy to keep playing in the Geelong footy team at the moment," Thurlow said.

"We're starting to get a lot of guys back from injury and it's really important for me personally that I try and hold my spot and keep trying to build on the form that I had when I came back at the start of the year."

Thurlow suffered a lacerated kidney at Geelong training in December and risked having his kidney removed at the time.

"The first five to six days were pretty touch and go. I was probably going to lose my kidney for the first 48 hours, which was a little bit scary," Thurlow said.

"But the whole footy club was really good. I had basically everyone from the footy club come through the hospital doors in the three or four days I was in there.

"It was probably one of the harder things to get my head around if I could actually get back into the AFL team and if I was actually going to have an impact in 2015.

"I can't thank the footy club enough. They've really backed me in and it's given me a lot of confidence."

Jackson Thurlow has been rewarded for his impressive start to 2015 with a new three-year deal at Geelong that will keep him at the club until the end of 2018.

"I'm really trying to drive our communications and set up [when kicking in]," Thurlow said.

"Kicking in makes you feel a part of the game the whole time."

"I have to be careful at the moment because when I push myself I can get a bit sore."

"I haven't got the biggest frame going around, so I need to work on a my strength a little bit. But I didn't get knocked about too much."

"Hopefully I get this guard off next and start to get back into some ballwork," he said.

"We go to Falls Creek (for a pre-season camp) in a week or so, and hopefully I can pretty much be right to get some strength back in the actual thumb. So then I'll get right into it."

Tasmanian Jackson Thurlow says he hopes to make his debut in 2013 after being drafted by the Cats.

"I guess I'll have to see what role they want me to play, and I'll have to put some size on and get fitter and stronger," Thurlow said.

"But it is a goal to play an AFL game in my first year. That's the ultimate goal, but there's a lot of little steps I have to take to get to that stage."
