Jackson Thurlow Biography

Tuesday, 24 November 2020
Sydney delists Jackson Thurlow, Robbie Fox, Zac Foot and Sam Gray.

"Robbie, Zac and Jackson have all been outstanding people to have around the club and have made a contribution both on and off the field, so these were tough calls to make," Sydney football manager Charlie Gardiner said.

"The uncertainty surrounding the make-up of lists has made this period particularly challenging and all three have handled the situation with great character and maturity."

Wednesday, 17 October 2018
Geelong trade Jackson Thurlow to Sydney for pick 70.

"At 24 years old we think Jackson has a lot of good football ahead of him and will be a great addition to our defensive group," Swans head of football Tom Harley said.

"A former first-round draft pick, Jackson’s a great kick, he’s quick and damaging off a half-back-flank and on the wing and he’s a great character and we look forward to welcoming him and partner Laura to Sydney."

Monday, 9 May 2016
Jackson Thurlow expects his AFL career to resume in round one next season after having a knee reconstruction in April.

"The physios are really happy, the footy club's happy, I'm probably a couple of weeks ahead of where I should be, and everything's moving in the right direction," Thurlow said.

"It's been good so far. Fingers crossed it stays that way."

Monday, 7 March 2016
Jackson Thurlow will miss the 2016 season after scans confirmed a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.

Thurlow was stretchered from the field after his right knee buckled underneath him in a marking contest with former teammate Mitch Brown in Geelong's NAB Challenge hit-out in Shepparton.

"Confirmation that Jackson has torn his ACL is extremely disappointing for him and the club," Cats football manager Steve Hocking said.

"His development came along in leaps and bounds last year and he was definitely in the mix to become a permanent member of our back six this season after showing great promise throughout the pre-season.

"As a club we will ensure he is provided with all the support he needs to work through the process."

Saturday, 5 March 2016
Geelong will send promising young defender Jackson Thurlow for scans on Monday after he was stretchered from the field with an apparent serious knee injury in the third quarter of the Cats' NAB Challenge match against Essendon at Deakin Reserve in Shepparton.

"The docs have had a little bit of a look but they can’t confirm anything yet," Geelong assistant coach James Rahilly said after the game.

"He hasn’t had much of a go, just fingers crossed he is all right and he can be part of that back line that we need.

"He has had a great pre-season, he would have been a good chance for round one if that’s the case. His rebound, his ball use, has been really important for us, so we just cross our fingers."

Monday, 10 August 2015
Jackson Thurlow is the round 19 NAB AFL Rising Star nominee after collecting 18 disposals in the Cats' backline.

"I've just been really happy to keep playing in the Geelong footy team at the moment," Thurlow said.

"We're starting to get a lot of guys back from injury and it's really important for me personally that I try and hold my spot and keep trying to build on the form that I had when I came back at the start of the year."

Thurlow suffered a lacerated kidney at Geelong training in December and risked having his kidney removed at the time.

"The first five to six days were pretty touch and go. I was probably going to lose my kidney for the first 48 hours, which was a little bit scary," Thurlow said.

"But the whole footy club was really good. I had basically everyone from the footy club come through the hospital doors in the three or four days I was in there.

"It was probably one of the harder things to get my head around if I could actually get back into the AFL team and if I was actually going to have an impact in 2015.

"I can't thank the footy club enough. They've really backed me in and it's given me a lot of confidence."

Jackson Thurlow has returned to contact work at training as he makes a good recovery from a lacerated kidney that put him in hospital in December.

"He had been working hard but he is back on the track joining in contact work and hopefully won't be too far away."

Jackson Thurlow takes an important step in his recovery from a lacerated kidney, with medical staff clearing him to start his running program.

"Jackson started running last week. From now, it's probably another three weeks of that before he's actually back in full training with the squad," Cats football manager Steve Hocking said.

"He's still got a little bit of work ahead of him at this point in time."

Friday, 6 February 2015
Jackson Thurlow returns to the club for the first time since suffering a lacerated kidney in a training mishap with the Cats in December.

"I panicked a little bit thinking, 'Well you lose your kidney then you don't know how much of the season you're going to miss,'" Thurlow said of his injury.

"It was pretty scary but the nurses and doctors at the hospital were really good and the footy club was really supportive."

Tuesday, 6 January 2015
Jackson Thurlow is recovering from a lacerated kidney he sustained during a training accident when he copped an accidental elbow to his kidney during a training drill in late December.

Scans revealed a tear to the outer part of the kidney but Thurlow has avoided surgery and spent just a little less than a week in hospital before being sent home to Tasmania to recuperate.

"I'm viewing this as a minor hiccup and when I'm cleared to return to training it will be full steam ahead," Thurlow said.

"I feel alright doing normal day to day activities but not yet the exertion of being a footballer.

"I have to be careful at the moment because when I push myself I can get a bit sore."

Jackson Thurlow tallies 17 possessions, five marks and three tackles in his AFL debut against Essendon.

"I was on the ground for 10 seconds, ran once, and I felt like I was going to be sick. I dry-retched a few times in the toilets and from then on I was fine," Thurlow said.

"The senior boys said that they would try and get me into the game early, so I can't thank them enough.

"The way they go about it and the way they involve everyone in it, there was no reason for me to not get a kick."

Geelong players Josh Caddy and Billie Smedts receive cautions from police after they were arrested following a practical joke when they attempted to scare teammate Jackson Thurlow by wearing balaclavas and pretending to break into Thurlow's new house.

"We thought it would be a bit of laugh to scare Jackson Thurlow in his new house," the Geelong Advertiser quoted Caddy as saying," Caddy said.

"Me and Billie are both disappointed that we scared people in the community. The club has dealt with it. The police have dealt with it. We are both sorry to that lady."

Tuesday, 15 January 2013
Jackson Thurlow impresses at half-back in the Cats' match simulation against North Melbourne at Simonds Stadium.

"Obviously, it wasn't just like another game of footy, because you were playing against the blokes you were watching on TV last year," he said.

"I haven't got the biggest frame going around, so I need to work on a my strength a little bit. But I didn't get knocked about too much."

Tuesday, 27 November 2012
Jackson Thurlow will start his first pre-season with the Cats on a restricted program after sustaining nasty injuries playing in Tasmania including a broken thumb and facial fractures.

"Hopefully I get this guard off next and start to get back into some ballwork," he said.

"We go to Falls Creek (for a pre-season camp) in a week or so, and hopefully I can pretty much be right to get some strength back in the actual thumb. So then I'll get right into it."

Friday, 23 November 2012
Tasmanian Jackson Thurlow says he hopes to make his debut in 2013 after being drafted by the Cats.

"I guess I'll have to see what role they want me to play, and I'll have to put some size on and get fitter and stronger," Thurlow said.

"But it is a goal to play an AFL game in my first year. That's the ultimate goal, but there's a lot of little steps I have to take to get to that stage."
