Nathan Wilson Biography

Fremantle delist Nathan Wilson and Travis Colyer.

"It's always a tough time of year in the football industry when decisions on our players' careers have to be made, and I'd like to thank both Nathan and Travis for their contributions to Fremantle for the past six and five years respectively," Dockers footy boss Peter Bell said.

"Their dedication to the club has never wavered, and this is no more evident in their decision to see the finals series out with Peel as they continue to impart their experience on their younger teammates."

Fremantle says Indigenous stars Michael Walters and Nathan Wilson have both been targets of online racial abuse.

"This unnecessary and disgusting abuse should not happen and it saddens me, and everyone at our club, that it does," Fremantle chief executive officer Simon Garlick said in a statement.

"Individuals that hide behind fake accounts to hurt others are pathetic and we need to be able to curb this capability on social platforms.

"I urge fans ... call out racist and homophobic slurs for the abhorrent and archaic discourse that it is. It has no place in our game or in our community … enough is enough."

Nathan Wilson needed two stitches above his eye after being involved in an incident at a family party just hours after the Dockers' victory over Port Adelaide at Optus Stadium.

"We are aware of an incident involving Nathan Wilson at a family party on Saturday night in Mandurah, which the player advised the club of shortly after it occurred," a statement from Fremantle's read.

"Police attended an address in Mandurah where the party was being held and have subsequently advised that Wilson is not under investigation with regard to the matter."

Former Dockers defender Antoni Grover, who played 202 games for the club from 1999-2012, presents Fremantle recruit Nathan Wilson with his old No.14 jumper.

"When I got drafted, I was a natural forward and I went into the backline so, hopefully, Antoni can give me some good tips for the next couple years," Wilson said.

"I grew up going for Freo and he was one of the stars, so I’m grateful to get the No.14."

Nathan Wilson, one of Greater Western Sydney's first-ever signings when he was taken as a pre-listed 17-year-old, is now officially a Fremantle player after the Giants and the Dockers agreed on a deal to send him back to his home state.

The Dockers gave up their round four selection (57) at this year's NAB AFL Draft, along with a 2018 future round two pick, in exchange for Wilson and the Giants' round four selection (71).

The 24-year-old wasn't due to come out of contract until the end of the 2018 season and he'd become an important member of the GWS backline, playing 45 games over the past two seasons.

But news earlier this year that his partner Stevie was pregnant forced Wilson to re-evaluate his life and career goals, and he knew it was time to return to Western Australia.

"From when I was a little kid I've always said that if I ever made the big stage I wanted to play some footy in Perth, and I promised my family when I left for Sydney that one day I'd come back," Wilson said.

"It's done now and it's going to be great for my family to come and watch me every second week, especially my little nephews and nieces."

Tuesday, 10 October 2017
Nathan Wilson has already purchased a house back in Perth with trade talks still ongoing between the Giants and Dockers.

GWS expects a top 20 pick from Essendon for wantaway forward Nathan Wilson.

"Nathan's contracted, so from that perspective that gives us more flexibility in this trade conversation," Giants list manager Craig Cameron said.

"The ability to trade future picks helps us, so I see Nathan as a pick somewhere under 20."

Thursday, 28 September 2017
Nathan Wilson requests a trade from Greater Western Sydney to head back to Western Australia to be with family.

"Nathan's management has advised the club of his interest to return to Perth and play for Fremantle," Fremantle list manager Brad Lloyd confirmed.

"The club will be making no further comment at this stage."

Tuesday, 12 September 2017
Nathan Wilson has brushed off talk of a move back to his home state to play with Fremantle at the end of 2017.

"I've seen a little bit of media about it but I haven't thought about it at all, I'm just focused on the finals and more importantly, playing the Eagles this week," he said.

"The club has been great too, they've just told me to not worry about things like that and concentrate on my footy."

Nathan Wilson's weapon is his kicking, as shown by his 543.9 metres gained per match, which ranks him fourth in the competition so far in 2017.

Wilson also currently has a disposal efficiency of 81.1 per cent.

"I play a lot on instinct so if I see one of the boys out I'll hit them up, but if I think I can take someone on and beat them by running the footy, I'm happy to do that, too," Wilson said.

"I think my defensive one-on-one work has also improved a lot, and I've been really happy with that, because that’s something I've been working hard on with our backs coach Mark McVeigh."

Friday, 19 August 2016
GWS coach praises Nathan Wilson's attitude to being dropped to the NEAFL last week before earning a recall to take on Fremantle this week.

"Some players probably think they're stiff at times (to be dropped), but Nathan sort of said 'yeah, I need to find a little bit of form', and he did," Cameron said.

"His work rate had dropped off about 10 or 15 per cent, and the good thing about it is that he was the first to acknowledge it."

Friday, 4 March 2016
Zac Williams says GWS teammate Heath Shaw has helped shape his game significantly over the past two years since moving to the Giants from Collingwood.

"When 'Shawry' (Heath Shaw) came to the club, myself and (fellow defender) Nathan Wilson were very offensive minded, so it's been really good with him coming in and teaching us some tricks defensively," Williams said.

"He's been a really great asset for the half-backs in our team, we're really working on defending first and then working off our men."

Tuesday, 15 September 2015
Greater Western Sydney secures emerging defender Nathan Wilson on a three-year deal that ties him to the club until the end of the 2018.

"I’ve loved my time here at the Giants and this is where I want to be playing my football," Wilson said.

"This season has been my best yet and I just want to keep improving. Under Leon Cameron we all know there are exciting things to come and I want to be a part of it."

Wednesday, 17 July 2013
Nick Haynes and Nathan Wilson sign new two-year deals with GWS.

"As time's gone on I've become more used to Sydney and I love the city and love playing for the club," Haynes said.

"We've got new facilities coming along at Sydney Olympic Park, which will be top of the line and will be great for the future, and we've got a lot of talent on our list."

Saturday, 24 March 2012
Nathan Wilson makes his AFL debut for GWS at Stadium Australia with 9 disposals (7 kicks and 2 handballs), a mark, a tackle and a goal in a 63-point loss to Sydney.
