Sam Frost Biography

Friday, 13 January 2023
Sam Frost and Ned Reeves are back to full health after injuries prematurely brought an end to their 2022 season
Sunday, 7 June 2020
Hawks recruit Sam Frost says he likes the term 'Frost-ball', first coined by his coach at Melbourne Simon Goodwin, to describe his knack for running from his defensive 50, often while dodging opponents, before eventually kicking.

"I think he coined the phrase internally and he definitely used it the most, anyway, for quite a while before he mentioned it in the press conference," Frost said.

"I really liked it. The whole concept is a little bit frantic, high intensity, and all a bit unpredictable.

"It kind of made it more of a positive than anything for me. The name is a bit funny and I definitely had a laugh at it whenever he brought it up."

Sam Frost joins the Hawks. after Melbourne completed a complicated trade with Hawthorn.

The Demons traded Frost, picks No. 42, 61 and a future fourth-rounder in exchange for pick No.50 and a future second-round selection.

Hawthorn will be Frost's third club, after 21 matches at Greater Western Sydney (from 2012-14) and 70 at the Demons (2015-19).

"Sam is a fierce competitor and has excellent speed and agility, which allows him to play on tall and small opponents," Hawthorn football boss Graham Wright said.

"Sam will complement our defensive unit extremely well. We are excited to see what Sam can bring to the Hawks."

Sam Frost will ask for a trade to Hawthorn after stating a fortnight ago that he was still "waiting to hear" from Melbourne on a fresh deal.

Frost enjoyed his best season in 2019, playing all 22 games in a Demons defence that was regularly without key players Steven May and Jake Lever.

At 194cm, the uncontracted Frost's speed enables him to play on tall and small opponents. However, it's his disposal and decision-making that can let him down, with coach Simon Goodwin referring to it as "Frost-ball" after the round 14 win over Fremantle at the MCG.

Out-of-contract Sam Frost says his priority is to stay at the Demons, but is keeping his options open the longer it takes for a new deal to be presented.

"As far as I'm told through my management, they're having good conversations with Melbourne, so that's where I'd like to be," Frost told SEN radio.

"The longer it goes on, waiting on Melbourne is probably the difficult part of it.

"There's no deadline or thing like that. I know they've got things they're working through. Time's sort of getting thin, so the sooner, the better, I suppose."

Monday, 4 September 2017
Sam Frost signs a new two-year deal with Melbourne that will keep him at the club until the end of 2019.

Frost played 16 games this season after a delayed start due to a toe injury and brought up his 50th AFL game in round 14 against West Coast, but was omitted after round 20 and did not play the final three games.

His demotion was a surprise to many with his pace and athleticism giving the Demons strong rebound out of defence, but Frost accepted it was the right decision.

"It's probably still a bit raw – the way the season ended and the way my season ended," Frost said.

"I knew I was out of form, and it was valid and fair, but the frustrating thing was my bad form and the few bad games in the seniors – I wasn't able to turn it around in the VFL. A lot of players go through form slumps and it’s never always smooth sailing."

Tuesday, 20 June 2017
Sam Frost has put off contract talks with Melbourne until the end of the season.
Monday, 20 April 2015
Sam Frost will miss at least a month of football due to a fractured toe.

Frost hurt his left toe during the second quarter of Melbourne's 25-point loss to Adelaide and was immediately subbed out of the game.

"It's a crack in the second metatarsal, which is obviously really disappointing," Melbourne coach Paul Roos said.

"It looks like every team is going through a few injury worries at the moment but you've just got to cope with them unfortunately."

Thursday, 16 October 2014
Sam Frost has been traded from Greater Western Sydney to Melbourne in exchange for selection No.23 in the upcoming NAB AFL Draft, with the Giants sending picks No.40 and No.53 back to the Demons.

The deal was confirmed with only 10 minutes remaining in this year's NAB AFL Trade Period, with Melbourne opting to trade for the 21-year-old rather than select him in the pre-season draft.

"We just think there's an advantage in bringing him in as a developing player, the extra month of training would have made a difference for him," Melbourne football manager Josh Mahoney said.

"As a result we've slid back 17 spots and got another pick."

Wednesday, 1 October 2014
Brisbane Lion Daniel Merrett and Greater Western Sydney's Sam Frost are right in Melbourne's sights as the Demons look to cover the expected loss of free agent James Frawley.

"The whole year we've looked at the situation, if James leaves the club we need to have someone to come in and play a key position role," football operations manager Josh Mahoney said.

"Daniel Merrett was one name that came up, Sam Frost was another name. There's a number of guys out there we've been talking to that can potentially fill that role."

Thursday, 4 September 2014
GWS confirm that Sam Frost and Kristian Jaksch have both asked for a return to their home state.

"While we understand their decisions, we are disappointed to lose two highly talented key position players after spending considerable time developing them," GWS general manager football Graeme Allan said.

"We will now pursue what we consider to be fair and equitable trades for both players during the forthcoming trade period."

Friday, 11 April 2014
Sam Frost says him and brother Jack have a point to prove after both battling to get onto an AFL list.

"There is always a little bit of a chip on your shoulder missing out on something you wanted so badly to begin with," Sam said.

"And then getting an opportunity to maybe prove a few people wrong – definitely for me personally and I think Jack's the same.

"Jack ended up having hip operations before he was drafted.

"I spoke to 15 or 16 clubs at draft camp, but I didn't test because I had bad hips, so I can imagine why it seemed like a bit of an issue.

"But without surgery I played almost every game in the reserves in my first season with the Giants.

"I think it was blown up a bit, but it's all in the past now.

"It's brought us together, having gone through the same thing, and definitely there's a fire burning and you want to prove everyone wrong that didn't give you the chance."

Wednesday, 27 February 2013
The Giants have protected their young stars from swooping rivals, confirming seven players have signed new deals with the club.

Jonathon Patton, Dom Tyson, Will Hoskin-Elliott, Andrew Phillips and Sam Frost have committed until the end of the 2015 AFL season while Curtly Hampton and Aidan Corr signed through 2016.

"Everyone wants success, that is why you play the game and I think we are in the best position we can possibly be in," Patton said.

"The club has done an amazing job to put this list together. We have a lot of talent here. This is a great club to be at. This is a club you don't want to leave."

Sunday, 22 July 2012
Sam Frost makes his AFL debut for GWS with 10 disposals (6 kicks and 4 handballs), 3 marks, 4 tackles, 1 hitouts and a goal in a 95-point loss to Fremantle.
