Josh Jenkins Biography

Tuesday, 9 August 2022
Taylor Walker insists he enjoyed the Crows' notorious 2018 camp, despite a string of players revealing harrowing experiences from the Gold Coast training trip.

But Walker, who was captain at the time, admits it was difficult to hear former teammates including Eddie Betts and Josh Jenkins share they were still feeling negative effects from the experience.

"I took a positive experience out of it, but that does not take away from the feelings of hurt that those boys are going through at the moment," Walker said.

"I knew something was not right post the camp, I knew blokes weren't feeling that great about it. There were fractures within the group.

"I was having some confidential meetings at my house to try and work out exactly the path to take and I can honestly say that I did everything I could to try and fix it."

Monday, 8 August 2022
Adelaide chairman John Olsen and CEO Tim Silvers issue a fresh apology to players affected by the infamous 2018 camp following public statements of by Eddie Betts, Josh Jenkins and Bryce Gibbs.

"It has been confronting to hear Eddie Betts and Josh Jenkins describe their experiences during the 2018 pre-season training camp on the Gold Coast, as well as the subsequent hurt they have carried," Olsen and Silvers said in an open letter.

"We apologise to Eddie, Josh and any other player, coach or staff member, who had a negative experience during this time.

"Equally, we are sorry to hear Bryce Gibbs express his disappointment at the way in which the camp and events surrounding it were handled and its impact on the playing group, and we acknowledge there are others who may feel the same way."

Former Adelaide forward Josh Jenkins claims leaders of the Crows' infamous pre-season camp preyed on players with traumatic upbringings, including himself and Eddie Betts, and claimed a report about the welfare of players was buried.

"Each player was scolded with abuse and physicality so they’d be physically and emotionally worn out," Jenkins read out in a statement on SEN radio.

"I specifically asked for assurance that nothing regarding my childhood would be raised or used on the camp to spur me on or to break you down. It is my belief that this promise was broken, and I'm not certain that I'll ever forgive the individuals involved for that."

Josh Jenkins calls it a day on his AFL career. Jenkins managed one game in each of his two seasons at the Cats after crossing from Adelaide at the end of 2019.

"I've experienced three fantastic clubs, beginning as a 21-year-old rookie at Essendon and finishing with two very unique and enjoyable years as a Geelong Cat," Jenkins said.

"In the middle were eight seasons as an Adelaide Crow. And almost all of those eight were memorable for all the right reasons. Sometimes in life we get stuck in the moment and forget about the story in its entirety. My time as a Crow was amazing and one day we will return to our home on the beach in Glenelg."

Tuesday, 19 November 2019
Esava Ratugolea says he is open to a change of role in 2020 as Geelong figures out how to make best use of new arrival Josh Jenkins.

"If Josh needs more space I'll give him more space. That will probably give me more chance to play a bit more in the ruck as well and help Rhys out a little bit," Ratugolea said.

"I like to play as a forward but I like to play in the ruck as well because it gets me into the game a lot more."

Monday, 28 October 2019
Josh Jenkins says he's excited about a fresh start with Geelong after a difficult final season in Adelaide.

Jenkins said the main reason he left Adelaide was for more football opportunities but acknowledged his vocal nature - especially in regard to the club's issues - could have strained relationships at the club.

"Certainly it's well known that I was one of the guys who were very vocal and talking about some of the issues that we had and perhaps that strained some relationships and it's best to go your separate ways," Jenkins said.

"When the group's not performing or playing how you expect to, everyone feels that strain and it's claimed plenty of casualties over there in Adelaide and I'm one of them I guess."

Wednesday, 16 October 2019
Patrick Dangerfield is reported to be advocating bringing his friend, and former Crows teammate, Josh Jenkins, over to Geelong.

"I'm a little bit biased because I'm good mates with him, but I try and remove that hat and I just look at his form when he has played. I think he has a lot to offer at AFL level," Dangerfield said.

"He's a goal kicker … you've still got to kick a winning score to win games. He hits the scoreboard, he's a good contested mark and he's a really intelligent player.

"I think quite often we look at players for what they can't do rather than what they can do. I think a team would really benefit from him."

Adelaide trade Josh Jenkins to Geelong. The Cats also gained a future third-round selection, while the Crows received pick 37.

"Josh will give us added depth and experience as a tall option," Geelong list manager Stephen Wells said.

"He has been a very good player for the Crows, and he is looking forward to making a strong contribution for the Cats in the coming years."

Wednesday, 25 September 2019
Josh Jenkins will seek a trade to a third AFL club in 2020 after coming to a mutual agreement with the Crows.

"I'll look at other opportunities in 2020. I am contracted to the Crows, and more than willing to continue playing for them if that's what eventuates over the next 6-8 weeks, but I think it's mutually beneficial for both of us," Jenkins said at the launch of AFL Trade Radio on Wednesday.

"The Crows are looking to move in a different direction and I still feel like I've got more than adequate footy at the level so that's where we're at."

Thursday, 8 August 2019
Adelaide coach Don Pyke has laughs off speculation he had a physical altercation with forward Josh Jenkins.

"The concept of Josh and I being involved in a physical altercation is laughable, but I take it quite personally because it's disrespectful to suggest me as a coach would get involved with something like that with one of my players," Pyke said.

"I'm 80kg, he's 100kg, I'm not sure how that's going to work. If it's not as serious as it is, it's laughable."

Monday, 5 August 2019
Adelaide's coaching staff have shot down speculation of a rift with out-of-favour forward Josh Jenkins.

Rumours abound that Jenkins clashed heatedly with coach Don Pyke after his latest omission but assistant coach Ben Hart says that's not the case.

"He didn't have a run-in. He had a conversation about not playing on the weekend," Hart said.

"I don't think we have seen the last of Josh. He has been fine and we saw that during the year as well when he went back and (was) out of the side ... we just need that consistent level from him."

Friday, 14 June 2019
Josh Jenkins will miss four to six weeks after sustaining a knee injury in the last minute of Adelaide's win over Richmond at Adelaide Oval.

"Scans today have confirmed Josh has sustained a lateral ligament and capsular injury with bony bruising due to the extreme nature of last night’s hyperextension injury," Crows science and medical services coordinator Steve Saunders said.

"We expect Josh to complete his rehabilitation in 4-6 weeks and will update as progress is made."

Wednesday, 15 May 2019
Josh Jenkins is bemused by speculation he's on the AFL trade table.

"Funnily I had my brother reach out to me ... asking if I was being traded because he saw something was on Facebook," Jenkins said.

"Things can change quickly but it would be a fair stretch to make that assumption at the moment."

Jenkins was dropped by Adelaide four matches ago and the Crows have won every game since.

"It's taken longer than I hoped but there is still 14 games to go and at some point I believe I will be back in the team," he said.

"I'll just back myself, my belief and my ability that I won't be at the lower level long-term. I feel like I'll be back in the team soon."

Wednesday, 27 February 2019
Adelaide names an extended seven-man leadership group to support new co-captains Taylor Walker and Rory Sloane in season 2019.

Josh Jenkins, Richard Douglas and Daniel Talia have been elevated into the leadership group, which also consists of last year's crop of Walker, Sloane, Tom Lynch and Matt Crouch.

"These guys were recognised by their peers because of the way they drive standards and live our values and behaviours, while training, playing and engaging in other activities around the club," Adelaide coach Don Pyke said.

"Importantly, they are quality young men away from football and they bring a diverse range of skills and qualities which will help drive our group forward."

Friday, 31 August 2018
Not even missing two games with a hand injury could stop Rory Laird from claiming a comprehensive victory in Adelaide's 2018 best and fairest count.

In a gala function at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, Laird claimed the Malcolm Blight Medal on 222 votes, comfortably finishing ahead of last year's winner Matt Crouch (166) and key forward Josh Jenkins (162).

Laird enjoyed a superb individual year, finishing sixth in the League for total disposals and averaging 32.2 disposals per game.

Saturday, 4 August 2018
Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley is left fuming after Crows forward Josh Jenkins was paid a contentious goal late in Showdown 45 that put the Crows back in front on their way to a three-point victory at Adelaide Oval.

The AFL backed the decision to approve Jenkins' match-winning goal, saying there was "no clear evidence beyond reasonable doubt" to overturn the goal umpire's original call.

"My grandma raised me not to tell fibs. I think it hit the post but I'm pretty happy that they didn't think so," Jenkins admitted after the match.

Hinkley, however, blasted the AFL's score review system for the decision.

"To deal with that last moment, where the player acknowledges it's hit the post and the AFL, in a billion-dollar industry, can wreck seasons for football clubs," Hinkley said.

"If I was the AFL, I'd be embarrassed and disappointed in an industry that's so important to so many people.

"The technology should have made sure this monumental mistake in a football season shouldn't have appeared."

Tuesday, 25 July 2017
Shaking hands after a game is a football tradition, but Adelaide forward Josh Jenkins got an unexpected surprise when he approached Geelong swingman Harry Taylor.

Jenkins was in doubt to face the Cats after having a case of gastro from eating a dodgy ham early last week and Taylor was keen to remind him of his illness.

"When we separated there was ham in my palm," Jenkins told radio station FiveAA.

"It was probably about 25 grams worth from the deli. I wasn't getting too close to it … I was going to throw up.

"It was that small an amount you could have it hidden in your sock. I was dumbfounded."

Saturday, 22 July 2017
Josh Jenkins lost seven kilograms after suffering a bout of food poisoning before playing in the Crows' 21-point win against Geelong at Adelaide Oval on Friday night.

Jenkins ate some dodgy ham and thought he was a "long shot" to play on Tuesday, but took to the field and kicked the game's first goal within 30 seconds of the opening bounce.

"It was almost seven kilos, so it was a little bit frightening," Jenkins said.

"Luckily I'm a big guy so I'll be able to throw it back on but I certainly spoke to our nutritionist last night about getting some food back in. It's a bit of an excuse to eat away all weekend and try to chuck on a couple of kilos."

Tuesday, 30 May 2017
Josh Jenkins says being dropped for a run in the SANFL was exactly what he needed to regain his confidence after recovering from a rib injury.

"I probably underestimated the impact missing five weeks of training had on me," Jenkins said.

"I took for granted I could come back in the AFL level and play really well.

"It sometimes doesn't happen that way.

"It was a nice little circuit breaker for me to go back to the SANFL, play with a little bit less pressure on my shoulders and have a run."

Friday, 14 April 2017
Scans have confirmed that Josh Jenkins has a pair of cracked ribs.

Initial tests in Melbourne when Jenkins sustained the injury in round 2 had failed to uncover the problem.

Tuesday, 11 April 2017
Adelaide will be without Josh Jenkins for another week as he continues to battle a rib injury he suffered in round two.

"The injury hasn't settled as quickly as hoped, prompting the club to investigate further this week," the Crows said in a statement.

"Consultations with a thoracic specialist revealed Jenkins has significant damage to the costochondral cartilage as well as deep thoracic bruising."

Saturday, 1 April 2017
Josh Jenkins appears to have escaped serious injury after copping a heavy knock in Saturday's win over Hawthorn.

Jenkins was taken to Epworth Hospital after he clashed with Hawthorn first-gamer Teia Miles in a marking contest during the first quarter at the MCG.

The club later confirmed that initial scans showed no structural damage to his ribs or internal organs, but he will undergo further assessment.

Wednesday, 1 March 2017
Rory Sloane is waiting patiently for his fractured eye socket to heal before knowing if he can play in the Crows' round one clash with Greater Western Sydney.

The All Australian midfielder had to wait for the swelling to go down before having surgery at the end of last week.

A bone was inserted to add stability to Sloane's eye socket and to fix his double vision.

Sloane has been sidelined since he copped an accidental knock from teammate Josh Jenkins nearly a fortnight ago during a match simulation drill.

"When the eye went back, there was just too much pressure in there and it fractured my eye socket," Sloane said.

"I couldn't see a thing. It obviously went pretty dark because of the hit.

"Once I got inside and started to get assessed by the doctors, I was feeling a bit crook.

"It was a bit scary, but it's all good now and I'm on the mend."

Thursday, 22 September 2016
Josh Jenkins is set to undergo post-season surgery to address a lingering ankle complaint.

"Josh's had a bit of an issue with his ankle. He'll have a clean-out of that as well and we're hopeful that he'll have a normal pre-season program," Crows' high performance manager Brett Burton said.

Wednesday, 10 August 2016
Josh Jenkins says he has been selling the South Australian capital city to good mate and in-demand Essendon defender Michael Hurley.

"I have had him and some other friends of ours over for a couple of games this year and he's enjoyed himself," Jenkins said.

''I've done my best to sell Adelaide to him.

''Just as I went through contract stuff this year, I wanted to make the decision on my own because I'm the one who has to live with it and that's the same scenario for him.

''I know he'll make a decision that he's happy with and wherever he ends up, that club is going to be lucky to have him.''

Thursday, 21 July 2016
Josh Jenkins looks set to finish his AFL career with the Crows after putting pen to paper on a five-year contract extension.

Jenkins, 27, turned down a lucrative offer from the struggling Brisbane Lions to re-sign with Adelaide.

"I was keen to stay in Adelaide. I always had that intention," Jenkins said.

"I really believe in what we've built here and what we can continue to achieve going forward.

"The club has created an environment where you can get the best out of yourself and more importantly players, coaches and staff have bought into the team-first culture."

Thursday, 16 June 2016
Out-of-contract Adelaide spearhead Josh Jenkins says his future may not be decided until the end of the Crows' 2016 season.

In Melbourne on Thursday to meet with agent Paul Connors during his mid-season bye, Jenkins is weighing up lucrative offers from rival clubs.

The 27-year-old is believed to have been tabled a six-year, $4 million-plus deal from the Brisbane Lions, among a number of clubs interested in his services.

Richmond, with out of contract key forwards Tyrone Vickery and Ben Griffiths, is one other club understood to have shown interest.

"You don't rule anything out," Jenkins said.

"Ideally, there's an intention to stay and hopefully the club wants me to be there.

"You'd like to move towards something. There's a lot of external factors that come into play so we'll just see how long it takes. I'm pretty comfortable while I'm still able to get a kick, there's no rush to do it."

Wednesday, 25 May 2016
Adelaide coach Don Pyke says he is not fazed by speculation that spearhead Josh Jenkins has been offered a huge contract by the Brisbane Lions.

"It's with list management, it's an ongoing, work in progress and I'm going to leave it with them to get that deal done as soon as they can,'' Pyke said.

''Clearly he's a wanted player and Josh is on the record saying he wants to stay and play, so we'll let the list managers and the guys get the job done."

Thursday, 12 May 2016
Josh Jenkins says he is content with the progress of negotiations with the Crows as he shapes as one of the most high profile out-of-contract players this season.

"I'm very happy with where things are at and I think the club is happy with where things are at," Jenkins said.

"As I said all along it's a process and it takes time."

Wednesday, 11 May 2016
Josh Jenkins' contract talks with Adelaide remain ongoing, although any new deal is not expected to be finalised for some time.

"Those talks are ongoing as I understand it. That's being dealt with through our list management (team) and they're making progress, which is pleasing," Adelaide coach Don Pyke said.

"We'd clearly like to have Josh stay at the footy club, that's our intention and that's what we're working towards."

Thursday, 24 December 2015
At 26 and yet to play 100 games, Josh Jenkins says he still has improvements to make in his game but is pleased by his continued progress each year.

"I'm still only five years into my playing career [but] I think I've been able to take – whether it's a big step or a small step – but move forward each season," Jenkins said.

"I definitely think I was able to do that last year…2014 was probably the year I, not broke out, but cemented myself in the team.

"Then last year (2015) I was probably able to take that security to another level and actually have a big influence over the group and how we went.

"I know what my role is, it's pretty straight-forward, so I'll just continue to try and do it to the best of my ability."

Monday, 14 April 2014
Josh Jenkins boots a career-best four goals against St Kilda in round 4 after being overlooked for the Crows' first two games of the season.

"I broke my leg in round 18 last year and I was up and about training through the summer, but I probably didn't have my zip,' Jenkins said.

"I didn't feel fit, it probably took me a bit longer through the NAB Challenge to find my feet, so rightfully so I wasn't picked in round one.

"I went back and played in the Crows' reserves, tried to bide my time and knew that I'd get my chance at some stage and now that it's come I'm just trying to take it with both hands."

Wednesday, 8 January 2014
Josh Jenkins says he has fully recovered from a broken ankle suffered against Fremantle in round 17 of 2013.

"I'm going really well – I'm pretty pleased with where I'm at," Jenkins said.

"I progressed quite quickly into running before Christmas and was ready to train fully before the break but the guys just held me back a little bit knowing that there's no rush.

"Now I'm training 100 per cent with the group and doing all competitive work and tackling and everything."

Sunday, 28 July 2013
Josh Jenkins will miss the rest of the season after fracturing his ankle while landing awkwardly during a marking contest against Fremantle.

"He's got a fractured ankle, whether it needs surgery or not we'll wait until he sees the doctor this afternoon when he gets back to Adelaide," Crows football operations manager Phil Harper said.

"Hopefully he doesn't [need surgery] but even if he doesn't it's a three-month exercise."

Monday, 20 May 2013
With Adelaide's forward line already missing their spearhead Taylor Walker, Josh Jenkins sends a scare through the Crows camp by hyper-extending his knee in a similar fashion to Walker.

Unlike Walker, Jenkins was able to play out the game with no obvious ill-effects.

"It didn't look good ... I had a quick look at the replay, it looked very similar to 'Tex' (Walker's) injury," Crows coach Brenton Sanderson said.

"I haven't caught up with the doctor yet but at half-time he said it was a hyper-extended knee but Josh just said it feels fine."

Josh Jenkins won't require scans on his right knee, with the club confirming he has no suffered structural damage when it hyper-extended against St Kilda.
Friday, 26 April 2013
Josh Jenkins says his chemistry with Taylor Walker is starting to improve as the season progresses.

"I see things happening after the game when I watch the footage behind the goals and stuff like that," Jenkins said.

"I see his (Walker) movements, or my movements are sort of similar, so that's the way I realise we're starting to get there.

"Out on the field, once we're really gelling we'll sort of know where each other is at all times."

Saturday, 9 March 2013
Adelaide coach Brenton Sanderson says he has seen enough of Josh Jenkins during the pre-season to know that he can be an effective forward and ruckman for the Crows.

"I think we can still use him in the ruck, I think in his last two or three games he's shown enough," Sanderson said.

"He still needs to improve and he's working really hard behind the scenes to improve his ruck work, but he's a really exciting and dynamic player and the more work he gets into him the better."

Thursday, 24 January 2013
With the departure of Kurt Tippett from the Crows, expectations on Josh Jenkins to step up in 2013 have increased.

"Guys obviously give you a little bit more encouragement and coaches subconsciously probably put a bit more time into you with that position up for grabs," Jenkins said.

"I'm lucky that I've got some athletic traits that not many guys my size have and I want to take advantage of those.

"I've been able to score PBs in pretty much all my running, so hopefully that will stand me in good stead and help get me through the whole year instead of only two thirds, which was what happened last year."

Thursday, 11 October 2012
Adelaide player Josh Jenkins says most Crows players are disappointed with the way Kurt Tippett has left the club.

"I couldn't imagine spending several years at the one club, only to leave and burn almost all the bridges that had been built over the years," Jenkins wrote in a column for the Adelaide Advertiser.

"I am not saying Kurt no longer has friends or positive relationships at the Crows. But most from West Lakes would have some right to be disappointed in his actions."

Thursday, 13 September 2012
Former Adelaide recruiting chief Matthew Rendell says the Crows recruited Josh Jenkins on the possibility of Kurt Tippett leaving the club.

"What we did last year, thinking he (Tippett) might go at the end of this year was to go and source another ruckman, that's why we went after Josh Jenkins," Rendell said.

"We wanted to at least have a back-up who could play in the ruck and play forward. I didn't want to get into the situation of thinking `geez, he's gone, what are we going to do' and get into panic mode a little bit."

Friday, 3 August 2012
Josh Jenkins admits he didn't deserve a senior game at Essendon, but says he has a point to prove when he takes on his old side in Crows colours.

"There will be a lot of Essendon people watching the game, their coaching staff ... it would be nice to play well and just sort of show them that I could play," Jenkins said.

"There might be a few people at Essendon that doubted whether I could make it.

"While coming from nowhere to get rookie listed, I was a little bit disappointed with how I played last year as a whole and didn't really show my abilities up forward as much as I'd have liked to."

Saturday, 12 May 2012
Josh Jenkins makes his AFL debut for Adelaide at Football Park with 7 disposals (5 kicks and 2 handballs), 4 marks, 2 tackles, 8 hitouts and a goal in a 50-point win over Geelong.
Thursday, 29 March 2012
Former Essendon ruckman and Crows recruit Josh Jenkins has upset VFL figures by labelling the SANFL as "unarguably" the best league outside the AFL.

"One thing is clearly evident; the support for the SANFL and its clubs is sensational," Jenkins said in his blog JJ's Journal.

"In some cases, the VFL end of the club want wins and premiership cups while the AFL group want player development as the number one priority. Both cases are fair enough but are not always conducive to a great partnership."

Thursday, 6 October 2011
Essendon players Heath Hocking and Josh Jenkins have been fined for breaching the code of conduct over the on-selling of AFL Grand Final tickets via Twitter.

"The resale of Grand Final tickets for profit is illegal and both players understand the seriousness of this issue,'' Essendon general manager of football operations Paul Hamilton said.

"Although Heath never had any intention of selling the tickets, he was aware that Josh was trying to gauge their value via Twitter and should have put a stop to it. As Heath had full awareness it was happening, he takes responsibility for his involvement as well.''
