Brodie Smith Biography

Friday, 5 September 2014
Daniel Talia is crowned the Crows' 2014 club champion, finishing strongly in a thrilling count to claim his first Malcolm Blight Medal.

Talia shared the lead with Patrick Dangerfield entering the final round on 72 votes, but his stellar performance on St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt in round 23 saw him clinch the award (79 votes) from Rory Sloane (77).

Dangerfield finished third (76) and only nine votes separated the top five, which was rounded out by Brodie Smith (72) and Sam Jacobs (70).

Adelaide re-signs talented defender Brodie Smith for a further two seasons, tying him to the club until the end of 2016.

"Brodie has already forged a reputation as a big-game performer," Crows list manager David Noble said.

"Going forward, we seem him becoming a key part of our talented midfield group.

"We are always keen to develop and foster local talent and Brodie is a perfect example of that."

Brodie Smith says an injury to Crows captain Nathan Van Berlo may present an opportunity for him to cement a spot in Adelaide's midfield.

"A couple of midfielders are gone now and with VB, such an unfortunate event, but I guess that does open up a spot there," Smith said.

"I've played half-back the last couple of years but when I got drafted to the club I came as a midfielder so I've always been pushing to try and have a crack.

"Every pre-season I've done a little bit more and learnt a little bit more about the midfield but I'll play wherever I'm needed."

X-rays confirm that Brodie Smith has a broken collarbone and will miss eight weeks with the injury.
Brodie Smith suffers a suspected broken collarbone during Adelaide's NAB Cup win against Port Adelaide.

"The doctor said to me down the line he suspects it'll be a broken collarbone which is a six- to eight-week injury, but we won't know until he has x-rays tomorrow," Crows coach Brenton Sanderson said.

"It's disappointing, such an important young player for us, had had an excellent year last year so it'll test our depth."

Sunday, 3 February 2013
After stepping up during the Crows' finals series last year, Brodie Smith hopes to take his game to another level in 2013 and will use the upcoming NAB Cup to prove himself.

"I was really happy with my finals series, it gave me a lot of confidence going into this pre-season to keep improving," Smith said.

"Talking about these spots up for grabs, you don't want to try and use [the NAB Cup] as a tune up and [then] someone comes in and plays better than you and takes your spot.

"I've just got to approach every game like I would in a normal season and just play my best footy and try and get that spot."

Sunday's Adelaide v Port Adelaide Showdown will present a unique family affair for young Crow Brodie Smith whose mother is an employee of the Adelaide Football Club, but whose father has remained a Port Adelaide fan.

"He definitely supports us when we're not playing the Power, but it'll be interesting to see come Sunday night what his feelings are like after the game," Smith said.

"I hope he's 100 per cent Crow."

Monday, 26 March 2012
Adelaide's Jared Petrenko and Brodie Smith have signed contract extensions with the Crows.

"We have a good, core group of young players, who we believe will take the club forward, and Jared and Brodie are a big part of that," Adelaide's general manager of football operations Phil Harper said.

"As a team, we've made a positive start to the year and Jared and Brodie have both showed signs they are ready to have strong seasons."

Thursday, 15 March 2012
Brodie Smith says he wants to play a more permanent role the Crows' midfield as an inside player.

"My year in the Under-18's I was an inside midfielder, obviously I was the same size as everyone else there, but coming into the AFL I was pretty skinny and played more of that wing role on the outside," Smith said.

"If I can keep putting some more size on hopefully I can get into the midfield and play that inside role as well. I've got a little bit where I can play down back and in the midfield as well, but if I can add that inside game to my game I'll be a lot better."

Sunday, 4 March 2012
Adelaide youngster Brodie Smith has his eye on a midfield spot in the Crows' lineup.

"I've played mostly on the wing, so I'm looking at that wing role at the moment and hopefully can try and crack into the midfield later on," Smith said.

"I've just got to keep playing good footy and I've got a couple of weeks left to put my best foot forward and hopefully get a spot."
