Travis Colyer Biography

Thursday, 31 August 2023
Fremantle delist Nathan Wilson and Travis Colyer.

"It's always a tough time of year in the football industry when decisions on our players' careers have to be made, and I'd like to thank both Nathan and Travis for their contributions to Fremantle for the past six and five years respectively," Dockers footy boss Peter Bell said.

"Their dedication to the club has never wavered, and this is no more evident in their decision to see the finals series out with Peel as they continue to impart their experience on their younger teammates."

Wednesday, 17 October 2018
Essendon trade Travis Colyer to Fremantle for a future fourth-round pick.

"We’re know what Travis is capable of bringing to our club and we are looking forward to seeing how he will impact our best 22," Fremantle's general manager of football Peter Bell said.

"Travis was really keen to get to Fremantle. He has demonstrated a clear ability to create scoring opportunities with his impressive speed and he’ll also be a good role model for our younger players."

Travis Colyer is set to miss the first six weeks of the 2018 season after undergoing surgery for a foot injury.

Colyer pulled out of training about three weeks ago after the sesamoid bone in his right foot became inflamed.

He wore a moon boot and the club had hoped he would improve without requiring an operation.

Friday, 19 January 2018
Travis Colyer is forced out of training after developing some inflammation in the sesamoid bone in his right foot.

"The sesamoids are a couple of little bones under your foot that can become painful," Bombers high performance manager Justin Crow said.

"We want to settle that down, so we've got Trav in a boot.

"He'll stay in the boot for three weeks now and he'll come out of that hopefully with the sesamoid settled and then he'll build back up again."

Travis Colyer says he felt anxious when returning to Essendon for the first time after serving a doping suspension.

"It was almost a little bit like that feeling, not really knowing what to expect because it's a new environment with a new coach (John Worsfold), although obviously we had him for a little bit (before being banned)," Colyer said on SEN radio.

"It was a little bit nerve-racking but the support that we've had from not just the staff and the football department, but the fans as well has been overwhelming."

Colyer was able to look at the positives of being away from an AFL environment.

"Football is such an intense and consuming environment, any opportunity you can get to have some time away, not in the circumstances that you want, but it's definitely reinvigorated me," he said.

Banned Bomber Travis Colyer will return to the club in 2017 after signing a two-year contract extension.

"This contract will take me to 10 years at the Essendon Football Club," Colyer said.

"The club means so much to me and is such an important part of my life.

"Working towards achieving success as a team is the ultimate reason you play football, and it's the ultimate reason I wanted to come back to the football club.

"We're in a position where we have such an exciting list, I can see the improvement in the young players and that success isn’t too far away."

Tuesday, 12 January 2016
Essendon's worst fears have been realised with the Court of Arbitration for Sport finding 34 past and present players guilty of taking banned substance Thymosin Beta-4 and suspending them for the entire 2016 season.

Twelve players still on the Bombers' list and five now at other AFL clubs who took part in Essendon's 2012 supplements program have been hit with two-year bans beginning on March 31 last year.

However, most of the suspensions will come to an end on November 13 this year, taking into account provisional suspensions already served.

Bombers skipper Jobe Watson, vice-captain Dyson Heppell, reigning club champion Cale Hooker, Michael Hurley, Tom Bellchambers, Heath Hocking, Travis Colyer, Michael Hibberd, Ben Howlett, David Myers, Brent Stanton and Tayte Pears will all miss the Bombers' 2016 campaign.

The guilty decision impacts four other AFL clubs with former Essendon players on their lists, with Jake Carlisle (St Kilda), Stewart Crameri (Western Bulldogs), Jake Melksham (Melbourne), Angus Monfries and Patrick Ryder (Port Adelaide) to be sidelined for the season.

Former Essendon players Mark McVeigh and Brent Prismall are set to be suspended from their respective roles at Greater Western Sydney and the Western Bulldogs until November 13 as support staff are banned from any WADA-complaint sports under the sanctions.

McVeigh is an assistant coach at the Giants, while Prismall is a player wellbeing and welfare manager with the Bulldogs.

Essendon champion and former club coach James Hird slammed the guilty verdict and suspensions.

"I am shocked by this decision," Hird said in a statement.

"I firmly believe the players do not deserve this finding.

"They do not deserve to face a twelve-month suspension from the sport. This is a miscarriage of justice for 34 young men."

Travis Colyer says he is determined to get even quicker as he recovers from his season-ending navicular injury.

"Because we're so far away from games, it's looking like another eight weeks until I start running," Colyer said.

"In my head and the doc's head, it's about being ready to go in full training by after Christmas so I'll still have two months to get fit before the season starts.

"As much as the injury wasn't great, it's spurred me on with where I want to improve and get better."

Friday, 26 June 2015
Travis Colyer has opted for surgery on his season-ending foot injury to give himself the best chance of returning in time for the 2016 pre-season.

Colyer's season was ended when scans this week revealed a cracked navicular as well as a stress fracture on the fourth metatarsal of his foot.

Monday, 22 June 2015
Travis Colyer is expected to miss the rest of 2015 after he was found to have a "hot navicular" after the loss to West Coast in round 11.

"By the end of the game he was sore in his fourth metatarsal," Essendon doctor Bruce Reid said.

"We did an MRI and it showed a stress fracture, but more importantly he had a hot navicular – where he is not sore – and a small crack at the surface of that.

"He's got a stress fracture of his fourth (metatarsal), that's eight weeks, ten weeks max. But the navicular must heal properly."

Monday, 4 May 2015
Travis Colyer kicks the match-winning goal against St Kilda following a burst of speed that he says he has worked hard at developing.

With the Bombers trailing by five points late in the fourth quarter at Etihad Stadium on Sunday, the Dons speedster received a handball backwards of centre, evaded a tackler and switched on the afterburners as he streaked through the middle of the ground.

Colyer took two bounces running towards goal and drilled a low shot from 50m to wrest back the lead for the Bombers, who then clung on desperately in the final five minutes to win by two points.

"Something I've worked on over pre-season is being able to run out games and using my speed at the end of it," Colyer told SEN radio.

"In terms of fitness, it takes a couple of years to get there."

Wednesday, 18 February 2015
Travis Colyer signs a two-year contract extension with Essendon, tying him to the club until at least the end of 2017.
Thursday, 21 August 2014
Travis Colyer has strung eight games together for the Bombers, the longest streak of his career.

"A few friends have said, 'It seems you've cemented a spot'. I don't really see it as that, I just see it as I've brought something to the side and I've actually been able to make an impact," Colyer said.

"When I did get an opportunity, because I knew it was going to happen, I had to make the most of it."

Tuesday, 8 October 2013
Travis Colyer signs a new two-year deal with Essendon.

"I am really excited to have been given the opportunity to sign on for a further two years with the club," Colyer said in a statement.

"There were opportunities to continue my career elsewhere, but there are a lot of good people at Essendon and I want to be a part of the club and its push for success moving forward."

Monday, 10 October 2011
Essendon has re-signed best-and-fairest winner David Zaharakis to a new three-year deal while teammate Travis Colyer has also agreed to a deal that will keep him at the Bombers up till 2013.

"We feel both David and Travis will have a strong role to play in Essendon's next period of sustained success and we are obviously very pleased to have them commit to the club," Essendon football manager Paul Hamilton said.

"Both players have improved dramatically this season - including David winning his first Crichton medal in only his third season of football - and we feel they both can develop further over the next two years to establish themselves as integral members of the Essendon midfield."

Saturday, 10 April 2010
Travis Colyer makes his AFL debut for Essendon at the MCG with 19 disposals (12 kicks and 7 handballs) and 4 tackles in a 20-point win over Carlton.
Friday, 27 November 2009
New Essendon recruit Travis Colyer says he is determined to succeed despite his small stature of 175cm.

"What's helped push me is the success of guys under 180cm in the system. To see them doing well has shown me it doesn't matter how big you are. If you're good enough to play, you're good enough to play," Colyer said.
