Lewis Jetta Biography

Thursday, 19 November 2020
West Coast delists Lewis Jetta who managed only six games in 2020.

"Lewis has been a highly valued member of our playing group for the last six years and will always be fondly remembered as a Chris Mainwaring medallist and a premiership player," Eagles GM of football Craig Vozzo said.

"We thank Lewis for his contribution to the club and wish him and his young family every success as he moves into the next phase of his life. His vibrant smile and personality will be missed around the place."

Lewis Jetta has started drinking tea as part of his new post-game ritual.

"I absolutely love it. It's been working for me. It relaxes my body," Jetta told AFL.com.au.

"I saw it for the first time with Kieren Jack in the Sydney days, and I thought the same thing: 'what are you doing?'.

"I totally forgot about it (until four weeks ago) and spoke to the dietitian. I did ask for green tea, but I've been getting English breakfast. Any tea is fine.

"I'm starting to get into all different flavoured teas, so it's actually amazing."

Liam Ryan's mentor Lewis Jetta says the young forward will have the Eagles' backing as long as he learns from his mistakes after some highly publicised off-field episodes in 2018.

"All we can do is try to guide him along," Jetta said.

"Off-field stuff, he's still young, he's going to make some mistakes – I made some when I was younger.

"There are a lot of people who make mistakes, so as long as he learns from it and moves on, we're happy."

Tuesday, 18 September 2018
Lewis Jetta set tongues wagging two weeks ago when he unleashed a Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired celebration after kicking the go-ahead goal in the Eagles' qualifying final win over Collingwood.

The 29-year-old has been busy watching more YouTube celebrations and he's liked what he's seen from NBA legends Jordan and Bryant.

"I've been watching them when they hit the winning shot, fist forward and they tap the ground twice," Jetta said.

"So I might do that one. Maybe I will do ones from LeBron James or (Zlatan) Ibrahimovic."

Monday, 2 April 2018
Liam Ryan shows glimpses of his talent in West Coast's 51-point win over the Bulldogs.

Ryan soared for a spectacular mark over Jackson Trengove while finishing the game with 3 goals from 14 disposals.

Following the game, Ryan credited Lewis Jetta for giving him he confidence to play AFL footy.

"We had a chat last night. He told me just to play footy. We've gotten close," Ryan said of Jetta.

"I travelled over with him. He looked after me as a brother, looking after a little indigenous brother.

"That's what we came to Melbourne with. Brotherhood. It's what we played with and why we won."

Saturday, 27 May 2017
Lewis Jetta finally earns a recall after being selected in the Eagles' side to face GWS at Domain Stadium.

"How many players can tuck the ball under their arm these days with the way the game's played?" Simpson said.

While fans have grown frustrated that Jetta's line-breaking pace has rarely been showcased at West Coast, Eagles coach Adam Simpson says the team needs more than just speed from the 28-year-old.

"The game has shifted from someone taking three bounces down the wing. We've been working on 'Jetts' to shift his game as well," Simpson said.

"It's become more and more contested, and (you've got to be) more and more consistent in that area, so he's worked on that."

Monday, 27 February 2017
Sharrod Wellingham says teammate and often-scrutinised Eagle Lewis Jetta is hitting his straps in his second pre-season with the club.

"He's a lot more in tune with what's required of him from the club," Wellingham said.

"He's committed whole-heartedly over the summer to our program and it's obviously bearing fruit.

"We've also got to know 'Jetts' and what we need to do for him – he takes the game on.

"You get the ball in his hands and he's going to be a damaging player. It's also up to us to make him a better player as well."

West Coast axes recruit Lewis Jetta for the third time this season following his nine-disposal display during last week's win over North Melbourne.
Friday, 3 June 2016
After spending a week with the Eagles' senior team, Lewis Jetta is dropped again to the WAFL.
Wednesday, 18 May 2016
West Coast coach Adam Simpson says Lewis Jetta will need more than one good performance in the WAFL to win back his place in the Eagles' side.

Jetta was dropped last week after a quiet first six weeks at his new club. He responded by gathering 29 disposals for East Perth.

"He just got his hands on the ball. 29 possessions in a team he'd never played in with different teammates, albeit guys he trains with a lot, and just going back and trying to play our way and play to his strengths as well," Simpson said.

"I think he ticked a lot of boxes in that area. To say it all turns around in one week is a little bit off. But that doesn't mean he's not available this week. We'll go through that process."

Wednesday, 4 May 2016
West Coast coach Adam Simpson says the Eagles need to be patient with Lewis Jetta as he settles into his new club.

Jetta, 27, has averaged just 12 disposals in his first five games with the Eagles after being traded from the Sydney Swans at the end of last season, where he averaged 18 possessions a game.

"I think we've had some good performances from Lewis this year," Simpson said.

"It takes a bit of time to adapt to a new club, so we've got to have a bit of patience."

Saturday, 2 January 2016
Lewis Jetta hopes West Coast fans understand why he performed an indigenous war dance at an Eagles home match last season and embrace him as one of their own following his trade from the Sydney Swans.

Jetta stunned the Domain Stadium crowd when he celebrated a goal with a war cry in round 17 as a show of support for teammate Adam Goodes, amid the polarising booing controversy that had engulfed the now-retired Swans champion.

“Nothing was happening and up close I could see with Goodesy, some days he was fighting and just putting on a brave face,” Jetta said.

“All the other clubs had been doing it in the previous games and I just got sick of it.

"There were racist people and then there were others who didn’t know what they were booing for. Then you could see kids copying what their parents were doing and it was like a domino effect.

“I was thinking about it for a while and I had to make a stand. It triggered and sparked a whole conversation.”

Jetta, 26, said the controversy about his war dance never affected his plans to return home and play for West Coast, the club he supported growing up, and he hopes for a warm reception from Eagles supporters next season.

“It’s going to be interesting, but that’s footy fans,” he said.

“Like Goodesy said, we’ve just got to keep educating people and just teach them wrong from right. It’s going to take a little while, but I think most people will move on.

“I think once you change clubs, the fans pretty much jump in and back you ... well, that’s what I’m hoping.”

Thursday, 17 December 2015
Matt Priddis says new West Coast recruit Lewis Jetta will add some much needed run to the team.

"He has got great skill, great speed and we will be trying to use that wherever we can," Priddis said.

"If he can break the lines and get it forward it is going to be really good for us.

"He will play a little bit of wing and half-forward too. That outside run is something that will really help us going forward. He will be very versatile."

Wednesday, 14 October 2015
West Coast trades ruckman Callum Sinclair for Sydney Swans speedster Lewis Jetta in a straight swap.

West Coast’s general manager of football Craig Vozzo said the club was thrilled at its midfield additions.

"Lewis offers us some attributes which few players possess, particularly his line-breaking pace and elite kick," Vozzo said.

"We had two key targets going into the trade period and it’s great to now have Lewis and Jack (Redden) on board."

Sinclair had been a required player at the Eagles after playing 20 games this year, including all three finals, as back-up to Nic Naitanui.

Sinclair, who was contracted for next season, was understood to be keen to stay at West Coast until the Swans showed 'significant interest' in him.

Eagles football manager Craig Vozzo told NAB AFL Trade Radio on Monday the club was initially keen to hang on to Sinclair and not include him in a deal for Jetta.

But following the decision to trade their first-round pick (No.17) for Brisbane Lions midfielder Jack Redden, and the AFL's decision to give an end-of-second round compensation pick (currently No.37) for losing restricted free agent Scott Selwood to Geelong, the Eagles were left with limited options.

Wednesday, 23 September 2015
Lewis Jetta has requested a trade to either West Coast or Fremantle after notifying the Sydney Swans of his desire to move home to Western Australia.

Swans football manager Tom Harley told the club's website the Swans had done all they could to persuade him to stay but they would focus on trying to get the best possible trade outcome.

"The club has put a good offer to Lewis and while we are disappointed, we certainly understand the strong pull for him to return home to Western Australia with his young family," Harley said.

"Lewis is not a free agent, so we will work on securing a fair trade for the Swans during the upcoming exchange period."

Monday, 27 July 2015
Lewis Jetta says football fans need to show more respect for Adam Goodes and his contribution to the game.

Jetta stunned the crowd at Domain Stadium on Sunday when he goaled and then performed a version of the war dance Goodes' famously used in Indigenous Round.

"All through the game 'Goodesy' was getting touches and getting booed the whole time, so it was just a bit of support," Jetta said.

"He's a superstar of the game, a superstar for us (at the) Swans, and fans need to show more respect for what he's done for the game.

"All this booing stuff needs to be thrown out the window."

Sunday, 26 July 2015
Lewis Jetta performs an indigenous war dance after kicking a goal against West Coast in response to the crowd at Domain Stadium booing Adam Goodes every time he gathered a possession.

Jetta kicked a goal in the last quarter and immediately turned to the crowd and performed a similar dance.

The dance finished with Jetta pretending to throw a spear at the crowd.

Sydney Swans coach John Longmire said Jetta was frustrated and didn't think Goodes deserved to be booed.

"He (Jetta) wanted to celebrate the goal and he wanted to stick up for a mate," Longmire said.

"I think he was upset. Well, I know he was upset. I spoke to him after the game and he was upset at the booing.

"He has had enough of it and he is obviously pretty close to Goodesy and he celebrated the goal and that's how he acted."

Friday, 17 January 2014
Lewis Jetta has suffered a pre-season setback after having minor surgery to release the iliotibial band (ITB) in his right knee.

"Jetta has done almost all of the pre-season to date, but he's had a bit of a tight ITB band, which runs down beside your knee," Longmire said.

"He's had a minor operation just to release that and we thought it was best to do it now because it still gives him the opportunity to be right for round one."

Tuesday, 16 July 2013
Lewis Jetta will be sidelined for a further five weeks with the Swans taking a cautious approach to his shin injury.

"We'd expect that he is still another five weeks away," Swans coach John Longmire said.

"We understand with the type of injury and the bone bruising that it is that it can turn nasty if we don't look after it, so our priority is to look after it.

"As frustrating as it is for everyone … hopefully we'll start him running and training after that."

Sunday, 26 May 2013
Footage of a Collingwood supporter shouting racial comments has been uploaded to YouTube.

"Give it to Goodes because he is black. Give it to (Lewis) Jetta because he is black. It's Indigenous Round umpire," the barracker shouted in the video.

Wednesday, 7 November 2012
Swans speedster Lewis Jetta says his improvement in 2012 was due to working with teammate Kieren Jack.

"It was just a lot of hard work. I wasn't as fit as I was last year as I am this year and I jumped on Kieren Jack's back and just followed him all pre-season and just came out really fit and it had just shown in my games," Jetta said.

"I managed to get down into defence and then push back hard into our forward line and kicked a couple of goals."

Saturday, 22 September 2012
Lewis Jetta is returning to form at the best possible time as the Swans mount a serious charge at the 2012 AFL premiership after dispatching of the Magpies in their preliminary final.

"I had a bit of a quiet last four weeks of the season and against Adelaide [in the qualifying final], I got some rhythm back," Jetta said.

"This game I got back to what I'm good at, running and carrying."

Jetta says missing out on All Australian selection does not phase him significantly.

"I wasn't really that disappointed," Jetta said afterwards.

"It's just an individual award. I was happy just to make the squad.

"I [would] prefer a [premiership] medallion around my neck, that's even bigger, that's what I'm focusing on this week. We'll get to recovery and get ready."

Saturday, 16 June 2012
Michael O'Loughlin says Swans midfielder Lewis Jetta is in All-Australian form.

"He's fifth in the goalkicking as a midfielder," O'Loughlin said.

"He's gone to another level. He's been tagged a couple of times, but he's come back, and with his chase and his tackling, he's improved leaps and bounds over the last two years.

"The consistency is starting to come as well. I love the way he's going about it. It's taken a lot of hard work. It's no coincidence he's playing well now, over the summer he had a red hot crack."

Tuesday, 1 May 2012
After several dramatic life changes, it seems everything is falling into place for Swan Lewis Jetta in 2012.

"The first year I was just happy to get drafted and play games. The second year there were some unexpected things, like having a baby," Jetta said.

"That was a challenge and I had to find a balance between playing AFL footy and being a young father. Now this year is just going smoothly."

Friday, 5 August 2011
Lewis Jetta has played 16 of the Swans 17 games this year and is ready to be known as something other than a substitute speciallist.

"It's been a little bit frustrating, you want to be out there and do things on the field, but you've got to wait your turn and be patient and stay calm and keep your cool," Jetta explained.

"Then when you get the opportunity, you have to get out there and do the best you can. It can be nerve-racking. If one of the boys gets a hit to the head or comes off limping, you sort of get excited about it, but then they're good to go so you have to wait again."

Thursday, 10 June 2010
Young Swan Lewis Jetta is being rested from the team that plays Port on Saturday, but Paul Roos expects him to be back quickly.

"They all love to play but what you're trying to do as a coach is use your experience a little bit and your knowledge of where they've come from and where they're going," Roos said.

"It's a big effort to play all 11 games and to play the way that he has... with the energy that he plays with, we knew that at some point, potentially we might have to give him a spell."

Saturday, 27 March 2010
Lewis Jetta makes his AFL debut for Sydney at Stadium Australia with 12 disposals (8 kicks and 4 handballs), 5 marks and a tackle in an 8-point loss to St Kilda.
Thursday, 25 March 2010
The Sydney Swans will unveil draftee Lewis Jetta on Saturday night in their 2010 season opener against St Kilda.

"I sort of had a feeling I was going to play, but I sort of had a feeling that I wasn't going to play. It didn't really matter if I didn't play [seniors]... I just wanted to play footy this weekend," Jetta said.

"I'm just going to run with the ball, that's it. Just play my game."

Monday, 22 February 2010
Sydney Swans co-captain Adam Goodes says draftee Lewis Jetta was told to run and kick as far as he could in Saturday night's NAB Cup win over Carlton.

"'I want you to run, take a bounce and kick it as far as you can and if that means you're having shots on goal, then that's a win for us'," Goodes said.

Thursday, 24 December 2009
Adam Goodes is taking indigenous recruits Lewis Jetta and Byron Sumner under his wing, much like Michael O'Loughlin did with him.

"It was fantastic. We haven't had any new Aboriginal brothers at the club for a while and to get Byron Sumner and Leroy Jetta - two quality kids - is great," Goodes said.

"I'll look after those boys and encourage them along, just the same as the other boys, but it's good to have a little more brotherly love around the place."

Monday, 30 November 2009
New Sydney Swans recruit Lewis Jetta expects to play AFL in his first year after overcoming the disappointment of being overlooked in the 2007 draft and playing against bigger bodies all year.

"I just tried to work hard, went back to the country and got used to the bigger bodies in the league," he said at his first day of training at Lakeside Oval.

"After that, I went back up to the Swans [Swan Districts] and turned it on."

Lewis Jetta was expecting to be picked up by Sydney after having a chat with Adam Goodes prior to the 2009 NAB AFL draft.

"He told me good luck and said something about pick 14," Jetta said at his first day of training at his new club.

"I did not believe him until when I had my name called out and I was thinking in my head, 'You just spoiled the moment Goodesy'. I wanted to be surprised ... but it is alright, I am here now."

Sydney recruit Lewis Jetta plans to make the city his long-term home.

"If I could play 150 games and win a premiership with Sydney, I'd be happy with that - that's at least what I'll try to do," Jetta said.

Wednesday, 25 November 2009
West Coast is expected to surprise at the national draft when it overlooks wingman Lewis Jetta with its first pick.

The Eagles are believed favour of East Fremantle defender Brad Sheppard instead.
