Gold Coast is making a strong play for North Melbourne support ruckman Daniel Currie as it seeks a replacement for Zac Smith.

The out-of-contract Smith informed the Suns this week that he wants a trade to Geelong after falling behind Tom Nicholls in Gold Coast's ruck pecking order this year.

Currie, 201cm, has been even more starved of opportunity over the past three years at Arden Street, where he has had the misfortune of being stuck behind star ruckman Todd Goldstein.

Goldstein's remarkable durability and unparalleled ability to ruck for almost entire games has limited Currie to four senior games despite his consistently strong VFL form when fit.

Daniel Currie makes his long-awaited AFL debut after being a late inclusion to North Melbourne's line-up to take on the Bulldogs in round 2.

"The battle we've had, like a lot of clubs, is if you've got a dominant ruckman (Todd Goldstein) and you want to play two, then they've got to be able to play somewhere else," North Melbourne coach Brad Scott said after the game.

"So Cuz (Currie) has had to work on becoming a threat forward, and while he didn't dominate the game, I thought he did some really good stuff in the ruck and he gave us a constant target forward."

Daniel Currie makes his AFL debut for North Melbourne at Docklands Stadium with 6 disposals (4 kicks and 2 handballs), 3 marks, 2 tackles, 9 hitouts and a goal in a 29-point win over the Western Bulldogs.

A strong performance against Carlton in North Melbourne's NAB Challenge clash may pave the way for emerging ruckman Daniel Currie to make his long-awaited AFL debut.

Currie did not manage to break into North's lineup at all last season, despite a stellar year in the VFL, with a thumb injury and Brad Scott's one-ruckman policy keeping him out of the side.

"[Currie] has been outstanding in the pre-season again and it was only a thumb injury at the middle of last season that kept him from making his debut last year," teammate Drew Petrie said.

"We'll look at the two ruckmen option in the NAB Challenge series. His ability to play as a forward is what Daniel's been able to show the coaching staff in the last three weeks, and that's what's put him in contention."

Tuesday, 13 August 2013
Daniel Currie ignores interest from opposition clubs and re-signs with North Melbourne until the end of 2015.

"Rather than let different enquiries from other clubs gain momentum and me put talks on hold at North, I thought it was best to just re-sign straight away and really make my intentions clear," Currie said.

"I love the club and I want to stay here for the long haul."

Tuesday, 7 May 2013
Daniel Currie's bid to make his AFL debut has been put on hold for about six weeks after he underwent surgery on his left thumb.

"Daniel has a grade three rupture of the ulnar collateral ligament of his left thumb," North medical services director Steve Saunders said.

"We'll need to see how the surgery pans out and how he progresses from there, but it's looking like he'll be out for around six weeks."

Friday, 8 March 2013
North Melbourne coach Brad Scott denies that ruckman Todd Goldstein is on notice as the club looks to provide opportunities to Daniel Currie.

"'Goldy' has been a terrific player for us for a long period of time," Scott said.

"We see him as an All Australian standard ruckman. He's got terrific endurance for a ruckman. He's rucked one-out for a long time, so we know he can do that."

Thursday, 7 March 2013
Daniel Currie is selected as the Kangaroos' sole ruckman in their NAB Cup match against Geelong, giving him an opportunity to stake his claim as the club's No. 1 big man.

"The NAB Cup gives us the chance to have a really good look at Dan and expose him to some elite competition in Geelong, while also giving him sole-ruck responsibility," North Melbourne coach Brad Scott said.

Several Victorian clubs are believed to be interested in ex-Swan ruckman Daniel Currie.

He was the only ruckman invited to the NAB AFL Draft State Combine in Adelaide on October 13.

"I've had a few interviews. Clubs have just expressed a bit of interest but, at the same time, obviously also said there was no guarantees," Currie said.

"It's exciting, but at the same time I'm not building up to anything … if it happens, it happens.

"I think I can have an impact at the highest level, but we'll just have to wait and see [whether I get an opportunity]."

Wednesday, 8 July 2009
Young Sydney ruckman Daniel Currie says his season isn't over despite stress fractures in his foot.

"Often with a stress fracture, it's a gradual build-up and then it eventually gets to a point where it's unbearable," Currie said.

"I didn't feel anything going into the game. There was a bit of stiffness in the foot but other than that, I felt fine.

"I suppose it was just one of those things that slipped through. Whether there was a landing incident or something with my running, I'm not sure.

"Something's caused it to go because it started to get really sore in the third quarter and by the end of the game, I couldn't walk."
