Former Cat Trent West records a whopping 119 hitouts for Leopold in the Geelong Football League.

Trent West retires after 70 games and a premiership with Geelong.

"I felt it was the right time to tell everyone. I feel like there is a weight lifted off my shoulders now," West said.

"I probably made the decision a while ago and as the year went on that decision probably got clearer for me, mainly because of my body – my knees.

"I could've tried to play on for a year, but I would be battling, I reckon.

"The way I have gone this year, not being able to train during the week just so I can play on the weekend, it's been pretty hard in that regard, just doing everything for my knee to get it up and going for each game.

"That's probably the main reason, (however) mentally I am also ready to get on and do something else.

"In the frustration of the last couple of years I've had enough time to think about life after footy and I'm pretty excited for it."

Scans have confirmed Trent West has ruptured his ACL.

Geelong premiership ruckman Trent West harbours no ill-will towards the Cats as he meets them in just his second match as a Lion.

"It's been a great change so far, I've really enjoyed being up here," West said.

"I don't think I have much to prove. I'm pretty sure they (Geelong) understand. It's about going out there and playing my role for the Lions."

Trent West is traded to Brisbane for pick No.41.

"He's quite excited about the challenge of moving to Brisbane and getting his hands on the ball at senior level again," West's manager Anthony McConville said about his client.

Cats coach Chris Scott says Trent West is still a chance to play for the side in round one.

"Medically, they're extremely confident. But given there's still almost two weeks until we play, we've just got to see how he trains," Scott said.

"He hasn't been ruled out. Put it that way."

Geelong's ruck stocks are thinning with big man Trent West undergoing minor surgery to drain fluid from his troublesome knee.

The Cats are hopeful West will recover in time for round one.

Geelong ruckman Mark Blake entered the clash with Collingwood knowing his role would be vital in the absence of injured teammate Brad Ottens.

Blake and youngster Trent West may not have been prolific ball-winners around the ground, but they at least established a clear dominance of their ruck duel with sole Magpie big man Josh Fraser.

Trent West is the obvious choice to replace the injured Brad Ottens, according to coach Mark Thompson.
