Daniel Kerr Biography

Thursday, 25 June 2015
Daniel Kerr admits he dabbled in illicit drugs during his career at West Coast but denies there was a deep-seated issue with drugs at the club during his time there.

"I was quite surprised when I spoke to the guys behind stage today of the perception that there was a huge group of West Coast Eagles players doing that kind of thing, which wasn't the case at all," Kerr said.

"I openly admit that I was no angel. During my career drugs was never an issue, was never a problem.

"I would get too many beers in me and find myself doing the wrong thing but not overly often during the season.

"My (problem) was drinking too many beers. After a few drinks, everything kind of led down that path."

Eagles captain Shannon Hurn says troubled former players Ben Cousins and Daniel Kerr are an important part of his club's history, but that it is time to move on.

"While they're part of our history, at the moment we're here trying to play footy and trying to win games," Hurn said.

"That's our main focus. But we certainly wish them all the best and hopefully they can get back to living a normal life."

Daniel Kerr appears in Perth Magistrates Court where he pled not guilty to two counts of endangering the life, health or safety of a person after an alleged incident at a Glendalough home in November of 2014.
Wednesday, 26 November 2014
Daniel Kerr has had his bail conditions altered so he can attend two weddings, while he waits for a court to deal with his violence charges.

The former midfielder appeared in Perth Magistrates Court on Wednesday dressed in a suit - in contrast to his dishevelled appearance last time he was in court - with his mother, Roxanne, by his side.

The magistrate agreed to waive Kerr's curfew so he could attend both events and allow him to stay at a different address than that stated in his bail conditions for the wedding in Dunsborough.

Monday, 17 November 2014
Daniel Kerr has been released from Perth's maximum security Hakea prison after his parents reportedly posted the $5000 bail on Sunday night.

The 31-year-old spent five days behind bars.

He has been charged with two counts of endangering the life, health or safety of a person last week following an alleged dispute in the Perth suburb of Glendalough last Tuesday at 11pm AWST.

A Perth Magistrate granted Kerr bail on Wednesday under a number of conditions, including a 12-hour a day (7pm to 7am) curfew.

Thursday, 13 November 2014
Daniel Kerr spent Wednesday night in Perth's maximum security Hakea prison after being charged with two counts of endangering life, health or safety of a person.

Kerr remained in custody on Thursday morning after failing to secure a signature for $5000 surety.

It's understood authorities do not require an actual payment of funds, just a guarantee the money will be paid if Kerr fails to meet his bail conditions.

Wednesday, 12 November 2014
Former Eagle Daniel Kerr has been released on bail after being charged over an incident in Perth.

Kerr was charged with two counts of endangering life, health or safety of a person after an alleged dispute in the Perth suburb of Glendalough.

"The West Coast Eagles are disappointed and saddened at news of Daniel Kerr's recent arrest," a statement from the Eagles said.

"We will continue to support Daniel, who was an outstanding player for this club, to get the help he needs to recover from this situation and to get his life back on track.

"As this matter is now in the hands of police, the club has no further comment to make."

Monday, 2 December 2013
Retired Eagle Daniel Kerr says a severe hamstring injury in 2010 was the beginning of the end for him as an AFL player.

"I couldn't play the football I was capable of playing [after the injury]," Kerr said.

"I was able to play football to a reasonable level which allowed me to play in the team but ever since I did my hamstring I was never the same player I was before that.

"The only reason I could play AFL football for the period I did was because of the Eagles medical staff.

"Without those guys I probably would've only played 150 games."

Tuesday, 15 October 2013
Daniel Kerr hangs up his boots despite having a year to run on his contract saying his body can no longer handle the rigours of AFL footy.

"I've been lucky to be able to wake up every day and do what I love, but lately it has become harder to get my body to carry out my mind's instructions," Kerr said.

"It was hard to come to terms with the fact that I probably wasn't going to be able to play to the standard that I wanted, but I recognise that my best football is past me and it's time to step aside to let the new generation through.

"I've had the time of my life at this football club and I've made friends that I'll keep until the end of my days."

Tuesday, 3 September 2013
Daniel Kerr's future is unclear as the West Coast midfielder continues to deal with ongoing issues with his knee.

"There's a chance he might be retiring but there's also a chance he might not. It's pretty hard to say either way at the moment," Kerr's manager Colin Young said.

"On any given day he feels 120 per cent and then the next day obviously he's a little bit sore.

"I think John (Worsfold) and Daniel have had quite a few meetings over the last 10-12 weeks to make sure that they've monitored him right and they've played things accordingly."

Friday, 9 August 2013
Daniel Kerr has been sent in for minor knee surgery on Friday after leaving the training track on Wednesday with discomfort.

Kerr has managed just 10 matches this season for West Coast due to various issues surrounding his knees and a cracked rib.

Thursday, 25 July 2013
John Worsfold backs Daniel Kerr to continue playing on in 2014 despite the midfielder struggling to regain peak fitness this year.

"If we can get him to a point where he can train at the required level and therefore play at the required level, then he has a lot of good games ahead of him," Worsfold said.

"With Daniel, we know that even at 80 per cent fitness, he can still perform really well, but that is getting tougher and tougher with the issues that he has been carrying.

"Really it is around whether we can we get his body right. I am sure he's got brilliant football left in him if he is as sound as he can be."

Monday, 22 July 2013
Eagles coach John Worsfold says he expects more from Daniel Kerr than what he is producing so far.

"Really his performances the previous couple of games he played for us he was struggling to play the footy we need him to play," Worsfold said.

"While he does his good stoppage work other players are having to pick up the slack around the ground.

"So Daniel needs to be up and being able to run and play offensive and defensive footy as well as just be good at stoppages."

Tuesday, 19 March 2013
West Coast has been dealt a further blow with Nic Naitanui and Daniel Kerr expected to miss a further month with knee and groin injuries respectively.
Tuesday, 11 December 2012
Daniel Kerr suffers a pre-season set back, having an arthroscopy on his right knee to remove a small bone fragment.

Kerr will spend the next two to three weeks recuperating before returning to training in mid to late January.

Thursday, 5 July 2012
On the eve of his 200th game, Daniel Kerr signs a new two-year deal with West Coast that will keep him an Eagle until the end of 2014.

"It (the contract) will take me until I'm 31 and I'd like to do one more deal after that but we'll have to see how the body is holding up," Kerr said.

"I'm obviously very proud to make 200 games. I made 150 reasonably quickly and then the body put the brakes on. At times I didn't think I'd make it to 200, but it's nice to get there."

Monday, 21 May 2012
Daniel Kerr says he is so out of form, he's dumbfounded rivals bother tagging him.

"Going on form I wouldn't tag me, no ... going on form I wouldn't have had a run-with player with me for the last month," Kerr said.

"I was dumbfounded Clint Jones went to me on the weekend. I haven't had a good game in nearly a month."

Wednesday, 16 May 2012
Nic Naitanui posts a picture of Daniel Kerr with face swelling due to a severe allergic reaction to food on Twitter but Eagles coach John Worsfold says the midfielder will not be hampered by it.

"If there were any residual effects then he wouldn't be training today, but he's back bouncing around and ready to go," Worsfold said.

"It's certainly not taking away that it could have been serious. Food allergies obviously can be very dangerous. It's probably something he definitely needs to be aware of what triggers it."

Monday, 9 May 2011
West Coast coach John Worsfold says Daniel Kerr will have to get used to wearing a hard tag as the midfielder slowly begins to regain top form.

"Kerry knows, as all players do, there's times when you wear a bit of heat and it opens up other teammates to get clearances," Worsfold said.

"So Kerry's aware there are times when he won't be able to be blocked and left free but that's because that's not his role at the stoppage."

Wednesday, 13 April 2011
West Coast coach John Worsfold predicts Daniel Kerr will get back to his very best, but it may take time.

"Teams aren't going to just let him run into form, but he's getting through the games and he's pulling up pretty well so he's on track to build up his AFL match fitness and be ready to show what he can do," Worsfold said.

"We're going to slowly see him do some of the magical things that only he can do but it will take a little bit more time."

Thursday, 17 March 2011
West Coast midfielder Matt Priddis is confident teammate Daniel Kerr can return to his best this season after spending most of the last few years out injured.

"He hasn't played a lot of footy in the last two or three years so if he gets his body right now he's still got another three or four years of solid footy in him," Priddis said.

"He's returned to the training track in the last couple of weeks and just watching him you can see that he's a natural footballer. He's just got so much time and composure.''

Sunday, 13 February 2011
West Coast will take a 'wait and see' approach with Daniel Kerr who is still recovering from a serious hamstring injury.

"Our plan is to take no risks with him at all. If he gets any soreness we back him off," Eagles coach John Worsfold said.

"We're not using round one as a deadline. When he's ready to go we'll put him out there."

Thursday, 27 January 2011
Injury-plagued onballer Daniel Kerr should be ready to go come the opening round of the season.

"The plan at this stage is [that] he builds up his running and starts to incorporate kicking ... and some more football activities over the next two to three weeks," Eagles coach John Worsfold said.

"When he actually joins in with the players he'll be ready to go flat out. If he's up and training with the guys in three weeks, and he's at a pretty good fitness level, then give him three weeks of footy training and get him into it and he'd be then ready for practice games."

Monday, 9 August 2010
West Coast midfielder Daniel Kerr has set his sights on a full pre-season to return to his best in 2011 after a couple of horror seasons debilitated by injuries.

"With a couple of years that I've had off now, the rest of the body is actually feeling really good," Kerr said.

"I'll play the exact same way that I've played my footy throughout my career. I'd imagine I'd be playing in similar positions and if you take away that explosive speed and run I don't think I'm much value to any team.

"I've been resting for two years so the body does feel a lot younger than 27."

Friday, 16 April 2010
West Coast midfielder Daniel Kerr has continued the Friday night curse after suffering a hamstring injury against Essendon.
Tuesday, 2 February 2010
John Worsfold says gun midfielder Daniel Kerr will spend more time up forward in 2010 in a bid to prolong his career.

"But there's no doubt you'll see Kerrey playing forward probably more than he has in the past," Worsfold said.

"Not to protect him but to get the best out of him, make him add most value to the team."

Luke Shuey will be given a golden opportunity to put his injury woes behind him when pitted against Daniel Kerr in Wednesday night's intra-club match.

"I don't think he'll keep up with Kerry in some aspects of the game, but I think he'll learn a lot," Eagles coach John Worsfold said.

"It's not a tagging role - it's a role where you're matched up on Kerr, so he's got to make some decisions himself. If he thinks he can win it and read the game better he should get after it."

Monday, 18 January 2010
West Coast captain Darren Glass says he expects Daniel Kerr to return to his best form in 2010 after struggling with injury throughout 2009.

"Kerry has had quite a horror run with injuries and suspensions and all sorts of things holding him back from playing good consistent footy," Glass said.

"But he's up and going this year and he looks pretty sharp on the track."

Wednesday, 5 August 2009
Daniel Kerr will not play again this year after succumbing to an abdominal injury.

"In the last week Kerr has stepped up his training program in a bid to recover from an abdominal problem with the view to playing senior football again this year," West Coast said in a statement.

"Unfortunately the injury has not responded as Daniel and the medical team had hoped and the decision has been made, in Daniel's long-term interests, to take a more conservative approach to his recovery from the injury."

Tuesday, 4 August 2009
West Coast coach John Worsfold says stars Daniel Kerr and Dean Cox will probably not play again this season due to injury.

"When the season finishes we can't stop them from doing anything and think we've fixed the problem," Worsfold said.

"We need to make sure we have. So that means getting them up to a point where they could play. That's a gradual build-up.

"And from there we hope we know we've fixed the problem and then they can have their break and prepare for the pre-season."

Thursday, 16 July 2009
West Coast midfielder Daniel Kerr is certain he is not battling osteitis pubis as he prepares to seek specialist treatment in Adelaide on his mystery injury.

"I definitely feel like it is not the same pain I had in 1999 when I was a schoolboy where I had pretty severe osteitis pubis, I don't think it's that," he said.

Tuesday, 14 July 2009
Dean Cox and Daniel Kerr will spend at least the next fortnight on the sidelines as the Eagles attempt to diagnose their mystery injuries.

The duo will visit a specialist in Adelaide this week in a bid to get the bottom of their complaints, which West Coast medical staff believe are groin related.

"Both players are going to fly to Adelaide with the team on Friday to see a specialist ... just for another opinion on what he thinks may be happening, so that's the next step," Eagles coach John Worsfold said.

"The issue is the soreness they've got came on reasonably suddenly but it hasn't gone suddenly, that's the concern."

Friday, 3 July 2009
West Coast assistant coach Daniel Metropolis says onballer Daniel Kerr and ruckman Dean Cox could have played this weekend, but the club is pursuing a safety-first policy.

Cox has a groin injury and Kerr is suffering from general soreness and neither player made the trip to freezing Melbourne for Saturday afternoon's clash with the Demons.

"Coxy still just pulled up a little bit sore on Thursday after training. He wanted to play, but we thought it was best that if he's not quite right we'd give him another week to settle down," Metropolis said.

"Kerry's just been a bit sore over the last few weeks. Again we thought he could play, but it was in his best interests to get himself right and get him up and going for the latter part of the year.

"So they should only be another week away."

Sunday, 21 June 2009
Besieged West Coast rover Daniel Kerr is in urgent need of reinforcements around stoppages and champion ruckman Dean Cox wants teammates to protect Kerr as the Eagles' most important play initiator.

"We've got to make sure our best playmakers are free," Cox says.

"He's going to be tagged and held on to, but if we can just free him up a bit more it is good for our side to get him back to running with the ball, clearing the footy.

"If 'Kerry' is getting held on to and we can free him up, we're going to be a better side and Daniel will be playing the best footy he can for us.

"So we've got to make it more difficult for his tagger to stop him getting a good run at the football."

Tuesday, 16 June 2009
Richmond forward Jack Riewoldt has accepted the match review panel's penalty of a reprimand for striking Eagle Daniel Kerr.
Monday, 15 June 2009
Jack Riewoldt has been charged by the match review panel with striking Eagle Daniel Kerr.

The young Tiger can accept a reprimand and 93.75 demerit points if he pleads guilty to the incident which occurred in the first quarter of Richmond's win.

Friday, 12 June 2009
West Coast assistant coach Scott Burns is the latest to throw his support behind onballer Daniel Kerr's counter-aggression after Kerr was suspended for flying the flag for his teammates.

"I was rapt with what he did against Carlton," Burns said.

"I was a bit surprised with what happened after that but I thought that was fantastic.

"I'd say to him, if someone is going to drop one of our players you get over there pretty quick and make sure that we're not going to stand for that.

"The only poor thing was his record leading up to that which cost him. That was it."

Friday, 5 June 2009
West Coast assistant coach Peter Sumich says Daniel Kerr's one-week ban was worth it because he 'flew the flag' for teammates.

"Daniel unfortunately cops a week, and he wears that, but I think our club and the younger players will look at that and say, 'Well he flew the flag and we're pretty rapt with that'," Sumich said.

"I think Daniel's been terrific in that area.

"That's his call and a spur of the moment decision, but I thought it was a bit of tit for tat to be honest with you, that's the way it looked."

Wednesday, 3 June 2009
Daniel Kerr is on the sidelines for a match after an attempt to have his hit on Carlton's Marc Murphy characterised as a bump, rather than a strike, was tossed out by the AFL Tribunal last night.

Kerr told the tribunal by videolink that in knocking Murphy to the ground at the opening bounce of last Friday night's game, he was merely copying an earlier hit by Bret Thornton upon Matt Rosa.

"I proceeded to bump the closest Carlton player in the same fashion, and that happened to be Marc Murphy."

Tuesday, 2 June 2009
Brian Lake, Daniel Kerr and Mitch Robinson will contest charges at the tribunal tonight.

The Dogs have accepted a ban for key forward Scott Welsh but decided to get backman Brian Lake available for Friday night's game against Richmond.

Hawthorn captain Sam Mitchell has virtually a one-game penalty hanging over him again despite being allowed to escape with a reprimand from a striking charge.

John Worsfold has backed star pair Dean Cox and Daniel Kerr as they struggle with form and discipline.

"Some of the goals he set up from stoppages, winning the ball and getting it out while under a full tackle were outstanding," Worsfold said of Kerr.

"As our side improves, he'll then win some of the easy possessions as well. But at the moment he is having to knuckle down and get in for the team and do the real hard grunt work."

Cox on the other hand has been criticised for not working hard enough.

"I'm not really sure where all of this is coming from," Worsfold said of the criticism.

"Because some of the people that are criticising him were also comparing him to Polly Farmer eight months ago, so something drastic has happened - I'm not sure what, but it's just a bit of a whim from some people to talk about that."

Tuesday, 26 May 2009
Eagles coach John Worsfold is confident Daniel Kerr's demons have not returned despite frustration appearing to get the better of the star Eagle last week.

"Yes we've spoken to him and he's feeling well and truly in control and feels as though his best form is not far away," Worsfold said.

"He found a fair bit of the football but he was disappointed with his use of it the other night. But he's working pretty hard.

"It's no excuse but with his groin injury he hadn't really been able to kick the ball at training for a few weeks so he was certainly rusty going into the game, but he'll be better this week."

Monday, 11 May 2009
Star West Coast on-baller Daniel Kerr will be assessed ahead of Saturday's clash with the Sydney Swans after scans reveal an adductor strain.
Sunday, 3 May 2009
West Coast could send Daniel Kerr in for blood tests after he struggled through the 13-point western derby loss to Fremantle.

Kerr suffered severe cramping during the match while vomiting several times.

Thursday, 16 April 2009
West Coast star Daniel Kerr plans not to let taggers get under his skin in 2009.

"It's just a matter of putting it out of your mind and just accepting that I'm going to have a tag on me every week and just learn to play with it," Kerr said.

Tuesday, 14 April 2009
West Coast coach John Worsfold says he won't move Daniel Kerr away from the action to beat tags believing that Kerr has the ability to beat tags.

"He's good enough to beat these blokes and he still had a good impact on the game for us on the weekend," Worsfold said.

"We'd rather him take them on and be in the game than hiding him somewhere else where he's not in the game."

Friday, 3 April 2009
West Coast assistant coach Scott Burns believes heavily-tagged midfielder Daniel Kerr should get more free kicks than he does.
Tuesday, 3 March 2009
West Coast's Daniel Kerr could join Dean Cox and Andrew Embley on the sidelines for Saturday's western derby clash with Fremantle.
Friday, 30 January 2009
A refreshed Daniel Kerr has given the strongest indication yet that he is over a knee injury that cruelled his 2008 campaign.
Saturday, 10 January 2009
Daniel Kerr has been slapped with strict behaviour codes in a new contract that also calls for counselling sessions with coach John Worsfold.
Saturday, 28 June 2008
Daniel Kerr is stung by a stingray during a recovery session in St Kilda.

"I have had shoulders, everything, but that was the worst pain in my life. I felt like I stepped on something squashy when it went whack in the back of my ankle," Kerr said.

Sunday, 10 February 2008
Daniel Kerr is expected to miss a month of footy after injuring his hamstring during an intra-club match at Subiaco Oval.

The injury occurred while Kerr was being tackled by teammates resulting in the midfielder having to be taken to the rooms in agony on a medicart.

Eagles coach John Worsfold says he expects Kerr to be ready for the start of the 2008 AFL season.

"He'll get over that in a couple of weeks and still get some good footy under his belt leading into the season.

"We certainly won't take risks with him, but when he's right and ready to go, we'll play him. If not, he'll get plenty of training under his belt.

"This gives him plenty of time to get over it. There's no pressure on us to rush him, and by round one, I think he'll be well and truly back to full fitness and ready to go."
