Jack Lonie Biography

Friday, 15 October 2021
St Kilda delists Jack Lonie.

Since making his debut against Greater Western Sydney in round one of the 2015 season, Lonie went on to play an additional 86 games (87 in total for 73 goals).

"Once drafted to St Kilda, he has never taken his AFL opportunity for granted and has played with a passion, enthusiasm and courage that earned him the respect and friendship of his teammates and warmed the hearts of our supporters and our legion of past players," St Kilda list manager James Gallagher said.

Jack Lonie is set for an extended stint on the sidelines after hyperextending his knee following a bump from Crow Rory Laird. An ACL injury has been ruled out.

Laird was apologetic about the incident.

"Obviously wasn’t my intention for him to have that incident, I was trying to bump into him so he would spill the ball.. hoping for him that it’s not the worst result and that he’ll be back out there as soon as possible," Laird wrote on Instagram.

A different attitude was the catalyst for St Kilda goalsneak Jack Lonie's remarkable end to 2018, which helped revive his career.

He started the campaign in the VFL and after being dropped for the second time last season following the club being thumped by Sydney in round 12, the feisty left-footer was realistic about his situation.

"I did have a fair while to think about it. Obviously I knew that I had to fight for it and I was really proud with the way that I did that in the second half of the year," Lonie said.

"I took a lot of belief knowing that in a couple of games, I played all right. It wasn't great but I felt like I played my role really well and kept my spot in the team after that.

"Then had a good game against the Hawks (four goals), which I was really pleased with. I felt like I showed that I am good enough at the level and I can play a big part at the club in that small forward position."

Jack Lonie signs a new two-year deal to remain at St Kilda until the end of 2020 on the back of an impressive second half of 2018.

"The way Jack attacked his footy in those few weeks was impressive and a clear indicator of his personality and commitment to the club," Saints list manager James Gallagher said.

"His footy nous and ability to read the play and be creative are among some of the reasons we drafted him in the first place, and he really took his opportunities to display those talents at a critical time."

Saturday, 22 September 2018
Jack Lonie is on Collingwood's radar after the out-of-contract small forward met with Magpies coach Nathan Buckley recently.

The 22-year-old is only being offered a one-year deal by the Saints his impressive finish to the season that saw him kick 11 goals in the last five games of the club's poor 2018 campaign.

Lonie, who has kicked 44 goals in 50 senior games, is happy at Moorabbin, but is looking for the security of a longer-term contract.

Friday, 22 September 2017
Jack Lonie signs a new one-year deal with St Kilda to remain at the club in 2018.

"Jack also demonstrated his determination to be part of the senior team, even when required to play at Sandringham. His attitude was reflected by his dominance at that level and resulted in 12 appearances in the senior side," St Kilda chief operating officer Ameet Bains said.

"Jack's forward pressure and football smarts are highly regarded, and with another strong pre-season we expect him to achieve the consistency required to become a regular senior player."

Friday, 8 September 2017
Jack Lonie is considering his options after being offered just a one-year contract to remain at St Kilda.

In his 39 games in three seasons at St Kilda, Lonie has largely been used up forward due to his good tackling pressure and a nose for a goal, but he only kicked six of his career 28 majors in 2017.

As a pure midfielder in nine games at VFL level this season, he averaged over 25 possessions a game.

Monday, 6 July 2015
Jack Lonie is the round 14 NAB AFL Rising Star nominee after tallying 18 disposals, 5 inside-50s and kicking a sensational goal in the Saints' 110-point demolition of Essendon.

St Kilda coach Alan Richardson has been clear with Lonie about what else he needs to bring to cement his spot in the Saints' lineup.

"Being a small forward, Richo said to me that if I keep applying that forward pressure and getting involved on the scoreboard and bringing that energy, then I'll be getting a game," Lonie said.

"I've tried to own that forward pressure role and be the best I can be at it."

Sunday, 5 April 2015
Jack Lonie makes his AFL debut for St Kilda at Docklands Stadium with 9 disposals (7 kicks and 2 handballs), 2 marks and 2 tackles in a 9-point loss to GWS.
Friday, 28 November 2014
St Kilda selects Jack Lonie with pick No.41 in the 2014 NAB AFL Draft.

"He's a local boy for us – his local club is the Seaford Tigers – and it's fantastic for us to be able to have someone produced locally." Saints acting football manager Ameet Bains said.

"He's a terrific kid, a small forward, the co-captain of the Dandenong Stingrays and was Vic Country's best player in the championships.

"We do have a need for a small forward so from that point of view it was great to fill it but we also think that with his talent and character he'll be a fantastic player for the club."
